Could it ever work? Unless my sleep deprived mind is forgetting someone I don't think this has ever happened (at least not in the modern era).

It would be one of the biggest risky moves ever.It would be a big hit or miss, probably miss.

They have to hype them up as f*** and let him beat an establish big time babyface clean in the ring for it to work. So it's almost never going to happen. {Spoiler}Unless HHH's son becomes a wrestler

I can't say whether or not it would work, but I'm open to seeing something like that happen.

Weird, I was seriously mulling this over half an hour ago.
It could work, I think, but as was posted it would be a huge risk no matter what. If they have a Superstar they would put that much stock in, I think it would be better for them to go with a slow build rather than risk a backlash from the fans.

A completely new name? Too risky.
I don't think it'd go over well in this era of pretty much no competition (sorry TNA...I do like you but it's true). However, back in the day, if it was a big name coming in the company...it works. Hulk Hogan did it in WCW 1994.
Ric Flair could've come in and won the Title immediately in '91. Goldberg too in '03. Maybe even someone not as big time...for example, I think the fans would've accepted Jericho winning the title in his debut in '99. That's just how anticipated he was.

The Giant did it in WCW and I'd say that worked out well for him.

Seems highly unlikely in this era. I think it could have worked in the past with someone becoming a huge star outside of WWE and then getting an immediate world title match.
If I recall, Hogan won the WCW Championship in his debut. As did The Giant if I recall.
If Hogan had never had the heel run in 1979 or the early '80s in WWF, then I think he could have done it in WWF following his AWA run (where Hulk-a-mania really started, plus he was coming off Rocky III).

The only one I can think of, who could do without having any major backlash would be Sting imo.

WWE could have done it with Sting a few years ago. But I don't see any one who they could do that with where the Universe would buy that person as a legit Champion.

Yeah, I was thinking there was no way right now but back in the 80s or the MNW era, it could have. I could have easily seen Big Show debuting as a mystery opponent for Austin and winning the title thanks to Vince. Right now, no one out there can build up the name needed to be near that level without being in WWE first.

Giant is a good example unless it has to be like his debut NIGHT not just his debut MATCH.

Yes Sting would work as for Goldberg in 2003.

Only scenario I could see this happening would be if through a series of highly coincidental events, the TNA Champion on his last day of his contract accidentally retained the title on a pay-per-view when his opponent got severely injured. Then the next night on Raw, he shows up and wins the WWE Title.

They would likely have a very hard time backstage because they hadn't "paid their dues".

Sting and possibly Goldberg if he chooses to return.

Sting is the only name big enough for it to be done today. They could do it with Kurt Angle in a re-debut if he ever decided to go back. Maybe Jeff Hardy as well.

I think it's sad that Samoa Joe has decided to wallow in TNA, wasting away, when had they brought in a lean(er), mean Joe at ANY point in the last 7 years, and had him KayFabe catch John Cena (who would probably have agreed to it due to being a real life friend of Joe's/company man) or even C.M Punk by surprise with a submission move, and choke either of them out......that he could have pulled it off.
