Da Funk- Daft Punk
Oh yeah! That’s the stuff! That’s the good stuff! It’s the right vibe for the right environment. If I’m at a party, the type of party I want it to be is where this is playing. It’s really so new age that it makes this generation feel like something unique and distant from those preceding it. Way to start the round with something that feels fresh and sounds fresh. ------------------------------------------------------- Rockafeller Skank- Fatboy Slim
Meh. While repetition is a staple of this genre, the work of Fatboy Slim is grueling for me. There have been a lot of catchier tracks that just haven’t gotten the play that Fatboy Slim’s music has, and I don’t quite get that. That being said, this is the best track from this artist. If I were to hear this track as a sole representation from the artist, I would have no trouble with going to look for more of his work. The layering is quite impressive and it works like a charm. Great mix of influences at work here. Tempo shift is for the win as well. Like I said, the repetitiousness of the lyric doesn’t do much for me in this particular case. It’s a bit much. --------------------------------------------------------- Over and Over - Hot Chip
Yes! Oh my, yes! This is what I came to the category wanting. I love that we have Electronic as a category—marking out for it actually. And this the upbeat, high tempo, in your face, get off the floor and freaking move around magnetism that I want. Daft Punk got it going, and now Hot Chip has followed up with the good stuff as well. This is one of the definitions of the category. ---------------------------------------------------------- Head Like A Hole- Nine Inch Nails
Certainly an electronic track. And certainly, not the first time we’ve heard from Trent Reznor this season. That’s a major violation in my book and it will reflect in your ranking. Keep an eye out for that stuff if you want to win the whole thing with this judge. Like most NIN tracks, I cannot keep the pulsating rhythms out of my head. This act simply ASSAULTS listeners … and I love that. This track is sultry, dirty, maniacal, and scary … which is what I can say about 99% of Nine Inch Nails songs. Well done. ----------------------------------------------------------- The District Sleeps Alone Tonight- The Postal Service
There *is* a Postal Service song out there these days that I was holding my breath for. This one wasn’t it. I know it’s part of the title and the function of the song, but the track may be (may be, I say) bit too sleepy for me personally … at times. And then, when it’s on fire, it’s really on fire. Postal Service is such a risk-taker. It works so well, or it falls a little short. I love bands that take me a while to figure out. This is a track that falls into the “it grows on me with each new listen” category. I love that you’ve given me no easy way to judge here, and I love that as a player you’ve showed how to confound me and do better than I could as a player myself. By the way, this is sad as ****. It’s a song I rank middle of the pack, and then this time next year, I hate myself for not realizing this is one of the best songs of the competition so far. Please forgive me. Really, I’m asking that from you. Oh, what the heck – this may be the best song there is this entire round. Let’s just go #1 with it! I’m going to have terrible dreams and wake up with tears in my eyes after hearing “I was the one worth leaving.” You’ve successfully turned me into a trembling nail-biter the rest of the night. What an emotional and effective delivery. Schizophrenic judge for the win! ------------------------------------------------------------
The Top Three Could Go in ANY Order. So so so good!
1. The District Sleeps Alone Tonight- The Postal Service 2. Over and Over - Hot Chip 3. Da Funk- Daft Punk
4. Head Like A Hole- Nine Inch Nails 5. Rockafeller Skank- Fatboy Slim
********************************************
Strange Overtones- Brian Eno & David Byrne
What if Robin Thicke did gospel? No? Ok. I tried. Not at ALL what I expected here! You have baffled me! You have thought outside the box and kicked this category right in the rear! I’m floored and impressed. This is so so so the opposite of what I was thinking I would’ve done with the category. Kudos on a pick that presses the bounds of spirituality into a spiritual musical experience. That’s pretty much what needs to be said about this track. Nice! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh Happy Day- The Edwin Hawkins Singers
Oh yeah! Get it! Get after it! Bring this soul on! I’m proud as heck to see this category in our game. This pick is a go-getter, and you definitely show your knowledge of the subject here. So soothing, and the message of the song fits the musical effect (or vice versa). The lyrics could be totally different, and a listener would still feel uplifted and taken to a place that is not of this world. Well done doggone it!!! I love that effectiveness. $500 to the first person who is able to shake off that chorus and NOT bob your head or shake your head to it. Heck, I’m even closing my eyes and taking it in as well. Do the thing! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I Saw the Light- Hank Williams
Classic! Love it. That sort of vocal tremolo which is almost a yodel just strikes a chord with me. It’s really just a vibrato, but there is a orchestral fluttering effect to it on certain syllables. Great example of how simple can be effective. Those rhymes just pinpoint exactly what local color is made of. It’s unlike any song you’ve heard with words that don’t push vocabulary obscurity. It’s a really tough trick to make an effective, non-eye-rolling effect with such simple wordplay, but when you can pull it off with something like this, I marvel at it. A real talent that old school ballad writers (even dating back to middle ages) pull off like no one else. I love this example. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I Smile- Kirk Franklin
If this were an “open pick” round and this was the song choice, it would come across a bit hokey for me. However, in a category you’ve been assigned, it works like a gem. I really thank you for this pick. I set up my mind for what might be peeking around the corner in this round, and I’ve not gotten a single thing I expected. I mark for your approach here. I have seen four blisteringly good picks so far, and it’s just a matter of trying to rank four totally different songs at this point. You’ve nailed the category concept here, and I appreciate that! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joyful Joyful- Sister Act 2 cast
Oh my. That power! Good job yet again. A diamond in the rough = this category. Like the movie itself, the choice is a bit of a hit or miss. Those who dig the antics of the movie go more for the feel good moment like what’s featured here. I think this is just a case of having some other picks that just overrode this particular pick. I found the Naughty By Nature and Janet Jackson ripoff a bit unnecessary. I understand that the movie has to play to a universal audience. I just think it’s a bit gimmicky and disingenuous to the purpose of the song and category. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Oh Happy Day- The Edwin Hawkins Singers
2. I Saw the Light- Hank Williams 3. Strange Overtones- Brian Eno & David Byrne 4. I Smile- Kirk Franklin
5. Joyful Joyful- Sister Act 2 cast
***********************************************
Sing, Sing, Sing- Benny Goodman
At obvious as a pick as it might be for the category, it’s just a darn good track. Absolutely no way does the piece get old. I mark hard no matter how many times I hear it. How does one even THINK to blend all these sounds together. Loads of kicking, hand waving, bending forward and straightening up visually running through my mind as the song plays. FESTIVE! It’s a freaking monster of a song! I bow to the ability to compose just such a song. I have no idea how this even comes about on a sheet of paper. Brilliance! ------------------------------------------------------------ God Bless the Child- Billie Holiday
Question: is there a voice like this anywhere? Answer: No, not there’s not. Fuhgettaboutit. This is straight up a tune and age that shows the glitz and overproduction isn’t necessary. It’s done right. It’s delivered pitch perfect and letter perfect. You can’t define the piece by anything other than feeling. And the category here is all about feeling. There won’t be many stories told. There won’t be many political issues solved. You want emotion? You got it … in buckets! --------------------------------------------------------- People- Maynard Ferguson
You folks, I tell you what. These examples are telling the tale as to why you are the last 5 standing! This is musical prowess at work yet again. You can’t Google this crap. You just have to know it, have a taste for it, and a love for it. Your versatility is blowing my mind. So well-versed! It’s another piece where you just have to close your eyes and “Bill Cosby” it as it plays. So smooth. Put me in a chair in a smoky club and let me feel this way weekly! You have captivated me here. Again, emotion and captivation: it’s the name of the game here. And “People” gets after it! ------------------------------------------------------------ Feeling Good- Nina Simone
To me, this is the version. Everyone else afterward, quit covering this song (yes, I know this is a cover version too)! It’s almost a dead song because of the overplay and overattention all these reality singing shows give it. If there’s anything that deadens it a bit in the rankings, it’s just the overexposure the song gets. I like it, so not taking anything away from it. I just think that there are others that equal it, and I’m feeling like rewarding the musical prowess I spoke of earlier. ----------------------------------------------------------- Salt Peanuts- The Quintet
Perfectly titled track! Perfect! That’s some blistering speed. Some blistering precision. It’s like the air doesn’t even have time to enter the lungs before the musicians are ready to spit it back out. This is jazz, it really is. Again, that word “feeling” comes back to me. Atmosphere and effect. It’s all right there. I want a jazz club that can mimic this. I want to be a part of it.
1. Sing, Sing, Sing- Benny Goodman
2. People- Maynard Ferguson 3. God Bless the Child- Billie Holiday 4. Salt Peanuts- The Quintet
5. Feeling Good- Nina Simone
*****************************************
Which Side Are You On?- The Dropkick Murphys
That’s some good stuff there. It’s pounding my face. I feel like this sums up the genre really well, and I feel every chord and every syllable of the vocal. It’s punk, folks. This is how to rack it up! ------------------------------------------------------------- Brad Logan- Rancid
There is something going on in Rancid’s music that makes no sense to me. Why is it so addictive and catchy? I think it’s the deconstructist parts mingled with deconstructist vocals, and then there is this unique lead guitar thing that always goes on that makes you think, “What is going on in this song?” I love it. There is such a simplicity there that’s so attractive. I think that it’s just the perfect amount of “raw” to nail the punk genre. “Raw” is really the best description I can give it. And I love me some “raw.” ------------------------------------------------------------ Down on the Street- The Stooges
Love the throwback here. I live for the instrumentation in this song. Great great stuff. The vocals leave me wanting more, but that’s also due to Iggy Pop being a bit of an acquired taste in that regard. I think it’s a good call to use this deconstructed version rather than the one with the organ added to the mix. This has a great pre-grunge feel to it, and so many bands can doff their caps to these forerunners of an entire era attitude. --------------------------------------------------------------- A More Perfect Union- Titus Andronicus
I didn’t know this song coming in, but man, it’s another good captivation of the genre. I’m impressed here. Gosh, again, that instrumentation is to die for! Nicely done! On a first listen, I’m kinda addicted already. I’ve got to give this another go. I hope I don’t screw this up in the rankings. It’s catchy as heck on the first run-through, and I hope that I don’t UNDERsell it in the process due to its newness to me. --------------------------------------------------------------- Blister in the Sun- Violent Femmes
Meh, a little predictable maybe? Love the track, sure thing. Gosh, I’m just digging so many others’ musical knowledge in this round. I tell you what, I couldn’t have done it. So much versatility at work here and I can’t wait to see the unveiling of who picked what. This song has had the longevity it’s had for a reason. I LOVE for the variations from the 1:01 mark to 1:21. It completely makes the song, in my opinion. Then, of course, you have the vocal where you just tremble along with it. What a freaking well-constructed song, no matter how predictable. Come on, you all, show some respect!
Thank you all for no crappy “pop punk”… Freaking tough round to rank all the way from top to bottom! 1. Blister in the Sun- Violent Femmes 2. Down on the Street- The Stooges 3. Brad Logan- Rancid 4. A More Perfect Union- Titus Andronicus 5. Which Side Are You On?- The Dropkick Murphys

One Judge's rankings are in. It may be a bit fast but I think the Contestants could do well to have some time to work on the next Round. We've played through 28 Rounds and we're deep into Round 29. Round 30 should be something special, right? A Round to celebrate how wonderful this Season of FAN Idol has truly been. A look back at some of this Season's highlights... Round 30: Freakin' Awesome: The Greatest Hits of FAN Idol Season VIII Pick 4 Songs, 1 Each, for each of the following categories that blew our socks off:World Tour: Choose a song from a band or solo artist hailing from a country that is not the United States or EnglandBells and Whistles: Choose a song that features the use of an instrument that is not part of the standard guitar, bass guitar, and drums assortment (as before, it's just the inclusion. You can certainly have the other instruments as well)We're Live Hear, Pal!: Choose 1 song performed on television. Can be from variety shows, Superbowl and other sporting events' half time shows, New Year's Eve, Presidential Inaugurations and other events, Music competition shows like American Idol and the Voice, and so forthand The Voice: Choose 1 Song that features an amazing vocal performance. A punk rocker's growl, a soul singer's smooth groove, a rapper's mind blowing delivery, anything that shows off a musician's pipes Round 29's scores will be added to this Round's and Round 31's scores as well, to arrive at a grand total. The Bottom two scoring contestants will meet in the Elimination Sing-Off after all 3 Rounds are played. At this point in the competition, I have no doubt that the top 4 can live up to these amazing past Rounds and deliver us some of the best music we've heard yet.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the winner of these Rounds (the highest scorer or scorers) will receive an advantage in Round 32 that will be announced at the proper time.

As always, Pegasuswarrior, I love your commentary. It's what really gets me hyped about every post-round aside from the music sharing.

As always, Pegasuswarrior, I love your commentary. It's what really gets me hyped about every post-round aside from the music sharing. Thanks, Sawyer! Also, I meant to be more active in wishing our farewell'ed participants ... farewell. I was away from home for 7 days straight last week, and thoroughness was not my accomplice. My main goal was to give song picks their proper attention and try to rank appropriately. I really didn't even visit the main thread in those 7 days due to time and inability to be as thoroughly active as I wanted. Also, big ups for fw91 for the epic climb to the top at just the right time. Sawyer fighting off the elimination rounds has been intense too. And it may go without saying (I've hinted at it) but Roxie Daggers has proven to be right there in the mix for the championship of this whole thing from the get-go. Loving that contestant's library! Roxie has been one of my "picks to click" since the early going. I started to go back and do one of my "lists" at this stage in the competition as judges' scores are coming in. With it being such a crazy long song list season, I was going to do my top mark-out tracks for this season. You all realize how mighty of a task that is? After spending some time on it, the task is insanely difficult to narrow down. This season of song-picking has been phenomenal. It also backs up my adamant stance against re-opening the song library of songs already picked for future seasons, because here we are in Season 8 and people are destroying it with fresh tracks we've not yet seen. There are MORE than enough songs in the history of music to warrant new song selections as the mandate for each new FAN Idol Season. And with about two seasons (sometimes one season) per year, you know we'll all be old fogies eventually and bail from the forums. So in short, I'm thrilled with the "no repeat songs" policy we have adopted because it has really made this season (and previous ones) unique, educational, more fun and worth sharing. Amazing job this season to everyone.

And we still have lots of Rounds left.
3 out of 4 contestants have their songs in for Round 30 so, when judging for Round 29 concludes, we should be able to get right on them. Great pace everybody.
There's a lot of songs, so please give the judges the necessary time. Thanks.

{Spoiler}Bachman Turner Overdrive was a planned sing off choice for me back in the beginning of the game if I ended up in one, because "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" just to be clever. Wasn't me this time though. Love these lists btw.

{Spoiler}Bachman Turner Overdrive was a planned sing off choice for me back in the beginning of the game if I ended up in one, because "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" just to be clever. Wasn't me this time though. Love these lists btw. They aren't 100% set; listening to the songs again, I'm going, "Huh, that's a really cool song too..." and changed things here and there. That's great though, especially in Rounds like the School subject one, where there was just an absolute ton of songs that kicked a lot of ass. Heh, still changing them a bit. So many awesome songs.

I also want to add that the selections of this next round are pretty incredible - some of them made me smile as I listened. Nice. You guys are truly on it. I'll probably have a few lists and other side comments on the game's choices this season, as well. I'll do them little by little each post instead of one big full list.
This season, has been super fun for me. I tried something different in my playstyle this time around than what I've done in the past. It almost didn't happen that way until the absolutely great feedback Pegasuswarrior gave Leisure Society's - "Fight For Everyone" and ever since then, it made me play a bit bolder than I used to. Spoiler for length explanation. {Spoiler} I used to be pretty cautious about what the judges would think, as I always felt some of the weird things I like wouldn't catch on well with the general populace and that folks wouldn't give that music a chance in this game, so I used to avoid that new or 'quirky' style in favor of some popular favorites of the past which I liked too, since it really burned me the first time I played in this game and in Season 5. This game was different, because I realized that a few of the judges were actually giving some of that kind of music a chance for a change. In the beginning of the game, you might recall that I was a little frustrated by a few judges comments in the "New Songs 2003-Present" round. It was the first round I chose something 'weird' Jukebox The Ghost's "Somebody" and I was upset because that kind of music was being crapped on (not just my own choice, but nearly every contestant that round, due to the category) and I thought my fun would be limited once again due to the same old and I almost quit. I ended up picking Duran Duran's "Hungry like the Wolf" the next round, as it's awesome, but 'safe' in a way due to some overplay. (don't even need to post the link, because you guys all know it. ) Then when I noticed that a few of the judges like Pegasuswarrior gave that kind of music a chance and after Leisure Society's "Fight For Everyone" I started to become a bit more bold with my choices every round after that and I don't regret it at all.

Wrapping up the rankings for Round 29; I hope to have them in by tonight or Saturday.
I have two Judges' Rankings for Round 30 in. I'll reveal what advantage the combined winner of Rounds 29-31 will receive as we start Round 31.
I'm going out later this afternoon and won't have internet access until sometime Saturday, probably later after noon. Keep sending me songs and rankings as they come to you and I'll catch up on them tomorrow. I'll be around for a few more hours, most likely, so if you have anything you can send them to me know. Thanks everyone.

As the contestants awaited the results of Round 29: Judge's Choice I, they sneaked their way deep into the FAN compound's hidden recesses. As their Host was busy tightening security measures after the Demented incident, the Final Four perused the FAN file cabinets hidden deep in the labyrinth that is the FAN Library. What disturbing secrets did they uncover? Did they stumble upon the mysterious, Lovecraftian cult that the upper echelon of FAN mods have been part of for centuries now, dating all the way back to NWA: Alexandria (Egypt) and the bizarre wrestling rituals that focused on the ancestors of WWE Superstar Christian's slaves and the first Gooker, as well as the sorcery of the Mask of the Shockmaster cabal and... but I've said too much. Reading up on the FAN Idol Judges for Season VIII, the contestants were shocked to find out that Pegasus Warrior is actually the latest in a long line of tribal warlord-bards from a secretive tribe that resides in the lush environs surrounding Mt. Helicon of Thespiai in Boeotia, Greece. Renowned as the home of the legendary Pegasus, that most renowned of horses, Mt Helicon is a veritable Shanghai-La for musical genius and its tribe sends a talented bard out to the greater world around them to gather the best music available every century and return with his or her findings. This particular Pegasus Warrior's history with the Freakin' Awesome Network in general and FAN Idol in particular is a fascinating one, with many twists and turns but the document was heavily censored when it came to those details. Widow's Peak's history was just as mind-boggling. A musical prodigy from infancy, Widow's Peak was a long-time mainstay of FAN Idol, possessing a musical voice said to come from the heaven's themselves. Limiting her musical performances more and more throughout the years, those select few (typically FAN Idol judges who still required an express invitation to attend her performances in secret locations hidden from the common FAN) whisper that they felt a uncanny loss of time, as hours seemed to fly by in minutes where-in they were ecstasy at the utter perfection of her musical notes. As it was, those lucky auditors would note that they felt ill-at-ease at night time, tossing and turning in their beds as the Cure song "Lullaby" played interminable in their heads: "quietly he laughs and shaking his head creeps, closer now closer to the foot of the bed and softer than shadow and quicker than flies, his arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes..." The Final Four Idol contestants noticed her family tree included, through strange circumstances, Spiderfab4, who appeared to acquire his powers through a similar series of FAN research and scientific experimentation but that's a story for another day. Later, at the FAN auditorium, the Judges noticed that the Contestants looked at them strangely as they returned with their rankings. Judge Strong Brad was quite embarrassed when fw91 called him out with a grin, saying with a note of surprise and admiration in his voice: "Holy Shit, Strong Brad, you're Hornswoggle's Father?!? KingOrangeTyger: Contestants, Round 29 challenged you with a trio of Categories chosen by your illustrious judges and specifically designed to test your mettle. A FAN Idol would surely thrive under these circumstances, difficult as they are, and, indeed, the four of you succeeded beyond our expectations. Although there are two more Rounds left before our next Elimination Sing-Off, success in this Round serves as a great first step in one's progress to the Final Three. Due to the format and the Contestants' skill level, the margin of victory and the rankings between 1st place and 4th are razor thin. This Round will be added up to the scores for Round 30 and 31 to arrive at a final score, with the highest scoring contestant winning an advantage for Round 32. And now the results: The winner of Round 29, taking in 57 points in a decisive victory, is a contestant who has challenged our musical acumen time and time again. Time will tell, however, if this strategy will lead to the title of FAN Idol. However, responding in fine fashion to the gauntlet thrown down by the judges is... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Anonymous GM!!! who continued her epic Season with the Joy Formidable's Whirring, kept partying into the wee hours with Regina Spektor's The Party, relaxed and went to her happy place with Katie Melua's Happy Place, and seized the day with Lonely Island's Yolo!!! Congratulations!!!
In second place, earning 48 points... each!!! are two contestants who nailed this difficult Round, taking a big step on the Road to the Top Three. Dealing with rpgs and internet memes, commiserating with sultry songstresses and innovative female performers, and taking time to stop and laugh at the roses, second place is the spot for... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Roxie Daggers!!! who served us up the smooth Latin groove of guitar legend Santana and his fantastic band's Oye Como va, opened up the four-color Bam!!! and Pow!! (and Snikt!) of that new wave super hero Debbie Harry's Comic Books, sent chills down our spines with sultry notes from the late, great Amy Winehouse and her Me and Mr. Jones, and showed off the method in her madness with Richard Cheese's Insane in the Membrane!!!
and
Stinger4Christ!!! who amused us with tales of magic and muggles with James@war's enchanting parody Harry Potter (Before We Say Goodbye), the battle of the sexes exemplified by Neko Case's fierce message Man, the celebratory paean about house, mom, and apple pie that is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' Home, and the time traveling throwdown Epic Rap Battles of History as waged between Time Lord Doctor Who and mad scientist Doc Brown by NicePeter ft. MC Mr. Napkins, George Watsky, and EpicLloyd!!!
Last but not least, earning 47 points, just one pint short of a three way tie at second place is... {Spoiler}{Spoiler} fw91!!! who tore apart Grease's seminal Summer Lovin with the bootielicious Ghetto Lovin, showed that 2+2= funny with Bo Burnham's audacious New Math, Gin Blossom's revelatory Found Out About You, and Meredith Brooks' catchy celebration of pregnant female dogs, Bitch!!!
As the scores' illustrate, anything can happen in the next two Rounds and the smallest of margins will determine 1st and 4th place. Excellent job contestants and keep bringing the amazing music!
