Well, it's easy for me to be optimistic, as I'm not playing. I figure that there's a lot of game left to be played and no one is truly safe or truly out of it right now. Momentum comes and goes, so who knows how next Round will play out. I'm pretty happy that we have a mix of new and experienced players left in the game. Should be quite interesting to see who's left as we move forward.

Found it funny I had the highest scoring song and the lowest. It happens. I wonder if you would've had a middle scoring song in a hypothetical third Round, had that been included .

I have for sure been on a tear these last few rounds. Hope I'm not peaking now. Because its a long way to finals. Lol. I'm pretty surprised. Happily I might add. That Delta Dawn did well. I think it's awesome but wasn't so sure how judges would rank it. Turns out my gut feeling was right and I made that decision.
I was going to use Walk the Moon later in the game and that's the song I was like dang someone used it during this round. However I'm thrilled with the judges rankings this round. And look forward to having the bonus this round.

To make the School Daze one easy, the only songs I admittedly liked were the top four, witht he top two really standing out (I noted that "Chelsea Dagger" is the song that plays whenever the NHL'S Chicago Blackhawks score a goal, so that earned it extra points with me).
THEN CAME THE NUMBER SONGS. This time, you guys made it hard for me to do my job.
1. "6th Avenue Heartache" by The Wallflowers. As much as I love ATR, NO WAY I DON'T MAKE THIS #1. NONE. Truly amazing work.
2. "Two Weeks" by All That Remains. Hopefully this band gets used again (maybe in the repeat round?) because admittedly their newer stuff is a bit better. Still, this is amazing.
3. "409" by the Beach Boys. I grew up on this so I'm kinda prejudiced.
4. "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone. Yeah, nothing says great work by an 8os one hit wonder than this.
5. "Seven Drunken Nights" by Celtic Thunder. OK this is repetitive, but this is hilarious.
6. "School Day" by Chuck Berry. Too bad there's so many good songs higher up because this is a classic.
7. "One Word" by Baby Animals. Again, no fair that there's so many good songs in this batch because this should be higher.
8. "1991" by Azelia Banks. More unmemorable rap/R&B.
9. "April 29, 1992" by Sublime. Not a Sublime fan at all.
10. "One Thing" by Finger Eleven. Only one song of theirs I like and that was Kane's theme.

The Bad Touch- Bloodhound Gang
I referred to this song (indirectly) when Bloodhound Gang was picked in a recent season of the competition. This sort of novelty act doesn’t work on me well at all. I feel like Bloodhound Gang displays more talent in other songs they have. Even so, the talent is purely wasted. I don’t find it funny at all; in fact, I find it lazy. The only thing going for it is that I can nod my head along and I know the words decently enough because they *do* have recognizable talent in their lyrical flow. The flipside as to why I never got behind them (specifically this song) is just because it’s not funny. And if it’s not funny, that’s all the song has going for it. It’s too “cutesy”, like a school kid who thinks they are suddenly amazing because they drew a likeness of a penis on a desk. That’s it exactly: Bloodhound Gang is nothing more than penis-sketch-artists. No worries or any negative thoughts from me if anyone finds that kind of stuff funny or outright hilarious, but you’ve also got to respect a great many people who probably don’t and treat it as such. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Highschool Never Ends- Bowling for Soup
I can take pop punk at times, but the trend of most of it being a bit of an eyeroll for me as mentioned time and time again via earlier examples is still in tact with a pick like this. To restate my comments about songs like this, it’s an example of a band trying to have its cake and eat it too when they try to pass itself off as edgy and hardcore (in the punk sense) and then bring sophomoric lyrics and juvenile themes into the mix alongside it. It’s just a continual conflict of message/theme, as if so many people in the genre don’t know what kinds of artists they are. And the thing is, these are adults that are singing like this (most usually). One reason people like Taylor Swift get a pass and are—to me—awesome has to do with the fact that artists like that are representing their own age group and are a voice for that era of adolescence. It COMPLETELY boggles the mind how teen artists can get trashed for singing about teens (and some of it is sophisticated stuff) and then bands of mid-to-late-20-somethings and 30-somethings get praise from the same haters because they are so hip? No, they’re old enough to break a hip maybe. But old people singing songs about prom and locker room hijinks are not hip, especially when it comes across as someone PRETENDING to be that age. Bowling for Soup singing a song like this is like the 26-year old who has showed up to prom for the seventh year in a row (and notice how I did the math there—-their first prom would’ve been AFTER high school because they didn’t go while they are actually IN high school). And that, my friends, is why pop punk doesn’t work for me so often: you.are.not.highschoolers.anymore. (The bands, I mean.) And the hardcore approach falls short when the lyrics and song themes don’t match. Not all teens representations from adults are bad. But this really seems like the equivalent of those old creeps who can’t get away from high school days. At least Zack and Kelly and the gang were played by adults who knew they were adults. Shout out to Gabrielle Carteris/Andrea Zuckerman as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Danny Boy- Celtic Woman
Speaking of Zack and Kelly … DAT ARTIE EPISODE! Not the biggest fan of Celtic Woman in that I wouldn’t listen to them all day. But the mood of the piece here is undeniable and the song in question is a classic for a reason. I’m a little partial to the “old school” variety of the song, but the vocals are dead on here, and it works for what it is. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Watson- The Decemberists
Yes! Very nice! Great ballad and the folk-like approach here really drives home the effect of the song. Vocally on top of things as well as it is evident Meloy has a firm grasp on the storytelling aspect of his subject. Traditionally rooted, but modernized and an effective move for the music genre. The timing and strategic placement of those harmonies are superb as well. It really maximizes the effect of the song and gives it an extra dimension. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Veronica - Elvis Costello
This is how to play the round without resorting to high school hijinks. That chorus (or bridge to chorus) is some good stuff. It’s definitely what Costello pivots off of. I like the subtle toying with vocal range in this particular piece. It’s not necessarily flashy, but it’s there, and perhaps the fact that it’s not as flashy is what I like about that range. All in all, a solid pick that will hold its own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis
I thought about this song a while back and what a good candidate for a pick it would be with judges. I wouldn’t pick it for myself, but I am a fan of the song. This song probably gets a lot of overplay in Chicago, but as bad as I hate the Blackhawks, I love that it’s become a sort of team anthem. This is the first time I’ve seen the video actually. (Hmmmm…) This song is a neat fit for the round, and if Roxie *DAGGERS* chose this, I’m going to laugh. Nice touch if so. The instrumentation is the perfect soundtrack for so many situations. That gets it major versatility points with me as well. A song that could’ve gotten more attention when it came out, but glad it avoided overplay. A big thumbs up here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jack and Diane- John Mellencamp
One of my personal favorite artists. Classic Mellencamp storytelling here. It’s a song most people know, but I can’t say it has gotten old for me yet. At the same time, there are a lot of songs that don’t get NEAR the play as this one does that are much much better. I guess that would be my only reservations about this song. It’s a good balance between familiarity while avoiding overkill, at least that’s been my experience. The flow of the story with the flair of the vocals mesh up perfectly for maximum effectiveness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scatman- Scatman John
Not at all what I would’ve expected. It’s definitely got that catchy hook, but it wears thin after a few listens, I think. Lyrically a little empty, and while lyrics are by no means a pre-requisite for a good “song,” the fact that the backup plan (music) doesn’t really carry it as an enduring piece doesn’t do it any favors either. It’s a novelty piece, but one that wears thin as most novelty selections tend to do. If you want to showcase scat, I would go with Cab Calloway or someone who doesn’t have to resort to this level of novelty to pull it off. And honestly, I’m way put off by the fact this guy has to identify himself as “THE Scatman.” No … you’re not … just no. I think I would be much more forgiving of the song—all things considered that I mentioned earlier—IF the piece wasn’t self-indulgent at all and the vocals were featured in, you know, an actual song where scat was featured as support, but NOT the subject of the song. The self-indulgency is very off-putting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Delta Dawn- Tanya Tucker
Heck yeah, Delta Dawn. Oh yeah, and who predicted a Tanya Tucker appearance? Kudos! That vibrato! Always had the makings of a classic song, and with the exception of a few lazy rhymes, this song almost clenches a spot among the all-time country greats. Even with some of the laziness in the rhyme portion of the song-writing, all the other elements hit on all cylinders! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Anna Sun- Walk the Moon
Oh my gosh, I mark so hard for this song. If you would’ve gotten me into one more season’s competition, this song would’ve been a DEFINITE pick. Love the in-your-face rapid fire lyrics up front and the backing off into a falsetto that just makes the song subject resonate even more. That is ONE crazy good hook in the chorus too. This song has it all: a very well-balanced pick and one of a kind! Fun fact: since this is the school days theme, the title mistress in this song is actually the band members’ former teacher they crushed on hard back in the day or something. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Anna Sun- Walk the Moon 2. Delta Dawn- Tanya Tucker 3. E. Watson- The Decemberists 4. Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis
5. Jack and Diane- John Mellencamp 6. Veronica - Elvis Costello
7. Danny Boy- Celtic Woman
8. Scatman- Scatman John 9. The Bad Touch- Bloodhound Gang 10. Highschool Never Ends- Bowling for Soup
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two Weeks- All That Remains
The spelling in the lyrics of this video says so much about this genre these days. Instrumental-wise: talented. Vocally: talented. What the band struggles with: how to blend both. It’s just a train wreck in layering. It’s so obvious how the lyrics and vocals were arranged in a completely separate stage in the recording process, a different room, a different planet than the musical arrangement. I liken what’s going on structurally to a jigsaw puzzle where you can’t find the piece to match, so you take something that’s generally the same color and you snap that sucker in there whether it wants to go or not. All that said, this had so much potential. I really think there is talent there, I truly do. I just hate that they use the make-it-fit mentality in a genre that seems to settle for “good enuff.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1991- Azealia Banks
They get me immediately with the anticipatory count-off with that beat. I’m totally buying into Banks’ unique flow. It’s kinda like a deconstructed Nikki Minaj. I really buy into how the simplistic (yet very effective) minimalist tones in the background beats mesh with her delivery. Sometimes things like this end up being empty and leaving a lot to be desired, but this matches up nicely to pack a punch that would’ve otherwise been overstated if the musicians tried to do any more with the beats. It’s clever. I dig it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One Word – Baby Animals
Yes! Here’s pulling one out your hat from the “people should REALLY know who this band is” archives! I like the group and the song selection here. A lot of ways you could’ve gone with this round in terms of picks, yet you go for the exposure to Baby Animals. All the things late 80s/90s girl-led bands did right (I would list several, but they haven’t been used yet) this band follows up on nicely. I’m not sure why the genre has to evolve past this. I know progress is progress, but hard rock has undergone a de-evolution. This is powerful and effective, yet it doesn’t try to do too much. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 409- The Beach Boys
I know there is a big Beach Boys fan group on this forum (and on the judging panel) but it just doesn’t always hit home with me. I totally respect the harmonies. I love the way the guitars are tuned. This may not make any sense, but on some of their songs (not all), they seem a little lazy to me. Here’s the thing: they’re saying “Giddy up!” but The Beach Boys sometimes come across as Bueller’s economics teacher in their enthusiasm about it. I understand that it’s probably supposed to be swag. But I’ve seriously thought about this before, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the *too* casualness of the vocal deliveries sometimes that come across as too mellow for what the song seems to be designed to do. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6th Avenue Heartache- The Wallflowers
A hands down winner here. To me, it’s the best song from this band. It’s got a Springsteen lyrical style, and the delivery is not overstated; therefore, it doesn’t take away from the established mood of the piece. It’s a song you feel down in the depths, and I just love what goes on with it lyrically. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seven Drunken Nights
I just don't get it. Are people outside of this audience really into the lyrical jokes as enthusiastically as the audience members? It's one of those clever pieces that might hit a funny bone once but has limited to no repeatability, at least with me. Therein lies it's greatest flaw. I just can't get over the over-the-top audience reactions? It's really *that* funny? Feels a lot more novelty and a one-off kind of joke to me. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck Berry
Rockabilly says "thanks." A track that lays the foundation for so much that would later come. Much prefer this to the ripoff/sampled songs that came later. Good original choice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finger Eleven
Not sure what this song is about exactly, but the ambiguity makes it fairly universal I suppose. Not the biggest Finger Eleven fan in the world, but this song will suffice. They're singing about something worthwhile and memorable and whatever it is, the lead seems remotely connected to it and committed to the cause. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sublime
Listened to this today on the radio actually. Sublime isn't my favorite but I don't deny their appeal. They just didn't strike the right chord for me. You could've selected worse. It's a band whose talent I recognize, and I usually end up giving them more credit than how they actually resonate with me personally.
1. 6th Avenue Heartache- The Wallflowers
2. 1991- Azealia Banks 3. One Word – Baby Animals 4. School Day- Chuck Berry
5. Jenny/867-5309- Tommy Tutone 6. April 29, 1992- Sublime 7. One Thing- Finger Eleven 8. 409- The Beach Boys 9. Two Weeks- All That Remains 10. Seven Drunken Nights- Celtic Thunder

I'm wrapping up my work day, so I'll pm contestants about songs I've received and such.
It's been a good day but rather busy, so I haven't been able to respond much today. Thanks for the judges for posting comments and keeping the thread going.

7 out of 10 pairs of songs in for Round 19- School of Rock. Good job everyone! The school subjects I ended up going with seem to be working out well and it's pretty neat to see how the contestants are fitting their songs in the requirements.

Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis and if Roxie *DAGGERS* chose this, I’m going to laugh. I didn't, but I did sort of make a reference to something, if you look at my avatar. It's not the reason I chose my song (I just love it), but I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at the connection

Headed out for a little bit; I'll wait on the other contestants for a moment, but I'll pm them a reminder about the Round. In the meantime, I'll reveal Round 20's theme so contestants will have something to think about and look for. As always, you can send the songs to me and I'll hold them for the judges until the proper time. Round 20 is... From Curtain Jerkin'..... to Main Event Workin' Round 20 is about time, specifically duration. Choose 2 songs, one 4 minutes or less and one over 4 from one band or artist. Can be any genre, time period, etc. but, unlike the Evolution Round, it must be from the same artist or group (so you can't pick, say, Nirvana and then Foo Fighters for Dave Grohl. Same band or artist).

Looking at the duration totals, there's a gap of time that's a bit strange to work around. I'm going to change it so that we are asking for:
2 songs from one group or solo artist, 1 Song 4 minutes or less in duration and 1 song over 4 minutes. The idea is that we want one fairly short song and one fairly long song from the same artist. I considered 3 minutes or less for the short song but that's too limiting at this time in the game, imo. So, in the end, the exact time isn't too important just so much that we have songs that are demonstratively longer and shorter.

The ten remaining contestants were told to dress business casual and pack up for a brief flight on the FS Madison Carter II. They were told that they were headed to the Dean Douglas School for Gifted FANs for the next leg of the competition. "I trust that you all will be on your best behavior," KingOrangeTyger told them, "as you still represent the Freakin' Awesome Network and its related business partners. Goodness knows that we enjoy a precarious enough relationship with our sponsors without any added shenanigans. Whatever would we do without the fine people of Parts Unknown, South Dakota and their constant stream of masked spokespeople? Start renting out the compound? Heaven knows that we're still rebuilding relationships after the Abraham Washington incident... sending him so many basketballs and saying that he shouldn't hold a grudge for being fired, heh, who knew that would bite us in the butt later on, but I digress." So, the contestants got all nice and professional looking; Anonymous Gm made a tasteful black and white mask for the occasion, Stinger4Christ toned down his face paint lest he spook all the potential guest judges and assorted lunatics that seem to, somehow, get involved in this Season of Fan Idol. A couple of happy yellows here and there did the trick. Knalsic loves to Boogie put on a tasteful Angus Young inspired school boy's outfit, getting some snickers and giggles from the other contestants. He insisted on wearing a his Queen officially licensed beany and the Host didn't feel right to tell him otherwise. Landing at the airport, the would-be FAN Idols were whisked away by school bus and reached their destination shortly. Arriving at the school the Contestants were told to interact with students and teachers before the Round announcement. They were happy to discover that several of their fellow contestants were also present, teaching students a fine and well-balanced curriculum in order to grow up and become hard-working, successful FANs. Spiderfab4 sat in on a guest lecture by Judge Strong Brad about the finer points of Tournament design and implementation, as exemplified in his Celebrity Wrestling tournament. "Notice how I've made it so Percy Watson's frantic dancing matches perfectly with "Hey Ya" playing in the background... and then, boom, it starts to rain golden sparkles as he says "Oh Yeah!" Judge Strong Brad told his students, one of whom said "Oooh!" and scribbled the observation furiously in his Fandango notebook. Spiderfab4 took his turn designing a character for the tournament, giving his bruising wrassler a Spider-Man head and six arms, furiously attacking Strong Brad's ninja character and tying him up with unbreakable webbing, much to the latter's chagrin. Judge Orange held a seminar entitled Superstar Fashions: Then and Now, chronicling the evolving look of Pro Wrestling Superstars over the years. Hulk Hogan's iconic Red and Yellow t-shirts, Ric Flair's Bedazzling robes, and John Cena's single colored cap, t-shirt, and jorts ring gear were deconstructed and scrutinized alongside such groan-worthy attire as Dusty Rhodes' polka dot monstrosity and Shawn Michaels' balding 80's old man rockin' gear. Not Enough Orange! was the Judge's constant refrain, noting that Orange polka dots would have ensured Dusty's overness, that the Orange t-shirt era was the high point in John Cena's popularity. Stinger4Christ presented his "Many Faces of the Man They Call Sting" power point presentation about the Icon's make-up over the years, highlighting his TNA run with the dabs of green. wadefan22 shared the Wade Barrett dolls that she made, explaining to the school kids that the various rose motifs that she employed for each doll had a different meaning and helped to accentuate the various aspects of Mr. Barrett's tough demeanor. "A red rose means that he's fully in charge of the situation, while a pink one means that his thoughts are elsewhere, perhaps pining for a loved one that he lost during his bare knuckle brawler days..." wadefan22 would sigh and talk wistfully about the Bullhammer bully. Ssnakebite, the No 1 Frenchman thrilled his students with tales of the Great Attitude Gang Wars and astonished them with the joyous occasion of Miss Elizabeth and Macho Man's wedding. "J'Adore such a lovely couple. Such heart! Such passion. Monsieur Roberts, of course, only blessed the happy couple with a present of such a lovely snake! A gesture misunderstood, as most snakes are, by those in attendance. Now Tekno Team 2000, verily a team from the Future! Such were the expectations, such was the optimism that the Future could bring change to the Present. Ah, my friends, it was not to be!" Street Spartan weighed in, noting that a Spartan from the past, not a team from the Future, was what that particular period required. "We Spartans, descending from Hercules himself, have the strength, the will of 300 men. A will, I might add to survive this Competition!" Street Spartan then spoke of D-X and the NWO and other groups that broke away from the norm and found themselves fighting under great odds. In the Dean Douglas's School for Gifted Fan's Science Lab, the students thrilled to the cosmic exploits of Moonie, who was stationed at the FAN Lunar Observatory Station, hard at work fixing Gooker I, the main computer. Moonie made the students gasp with his tales of Moon Rocks and Biggah Pictures, of fixing the Nexus Capacitor and calibrating the Brother Love telescope. Z-A lead the students in sundry experiments employing a rare Moon Sand that Moonie sent him before the School visit, showing it's ability to retain unusual and complex shapes in the Earth's atmosphere, creating a picture perfect recreation of Katie Vick and Triple H's wacky misadventures. Judge brainbustaaah! demonstrated how one can measure brain waves, using them to create rather amusing little neon animations with his scaled down, ultra expensive Jerichotron 3000. In a moment's time, he wowed the kids with a compelling animation of Jushin Thunder Liger spitting mist at the Great Muta and then both puroresu icons playing "Walk this Way" on giant guitars. Knalisic Loves to Boogie stepped up and tried on the strange device, painting a picture of himself dancing alongside Alex Wright in a strut off that he soundly won, forcing Das Wunderkind to bow his head in shame and give Knalsic the Disco Cup. fw91 taught contestants, judges, teachers, and students alike the wonderful sport of 3MB: 3 Man Mat Ball, where in 3 teams of 3 people kicked 3 mat balls together and then ran around 3 bases in order to score, all while avoiding the other team's attempts to whack them with the kicked mat balls. Utter chaos ensued when Cantus Fraggle and Roxie Daggers decided to double cross there partner, Dammit Cage(King)!! and run away with the balls and try to hide them from the other teams, leaving Cageking defenseless as Pegasus Warrior and SAVEUS.GRD used the silly string to entangle him and then use him to drag away the Silver Bastion Booger idol away from the checkpoint and hand it to Widow's Peak, who then had to climb the slanted oak tree in order to reach the WCW Treehouse where-in she had to answer Square's (via a satellite link to his asylum cell) trivia questions about late Russoian WCW booking. The answer, as most would expect, was ___ On a Pole. Correctly answered, Judge Peak then took the idol and scored the winning goal, running Judge J's Gauntlet of electronica beats and rave lights, smoke machines and dizzying mirror balls, to find the correct passage that lead back to the FAN Idol set. After making the goal, Jazzman serenaded the winning team with a cool selection of Bebop inspired songs, played deftly on his Flash Funk autographed saxophone. Stinger4Christ and Anonymous GM would call into question KingOrangeTyger's referring of such a goal and indeed of this whole crazy Season and, soon enough, the contestants sent the Judges' these songs for Round 19: School of Rock: U + Me = Us- 2ge+her (Mathematics, History) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrwl6a4-lSgCruel Summer- Ace of Base (Science) www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cJtf2u2U6gParlez-vous Francais?- Art vs. Science (Foreign Language, Phys. I love adding new music to my mp3 player, and had 3 great conversations last round about my choices (ATR and Bloodhound) while talking to a person about their picks

My Rankings, as close as they are, are divided into 3 sections. The section of I love the song and I have something major about it that I love, The songs that aren't my cup of tea but I wouldn't mind listening to them, and the songs that for one reason or another I can not stand. Remember that my taste is very....varied . Heck I got into an Elvis Costello/Janes Addiction discussion last round with Roxie because of my taste Note: Only one of my songs are actually in my Top 5. That says something about how close we all are. Hell, as dumb as it sounds, I was kinda doubting myself in this game earlier because of how close we all are, but as long as someone here can say that I left a good playlist behind, I am a happy CageBear Just remember, my inbox is always open if you want to talk about this round or any round in the future {Spoiler}Elvis is Dead Never Gonna Stop Vincent (Starry Starry Night) Living in America Volare I Can Cruel Summer Pretty Fly for a White Guy U+Me=Calculus (Damn that bear is cute...) Haha, I think KingTyger will know Exactly which one of those songs I was thinking of swapping One of my choices with, but then I guess someone else beat me to the punch. I gave the Band's name and that is the exact same song... And I have a good idea who picked it. Love that song.
There is a song on that list with the same exact title of a song I almost picked, but it's a different artist so it's still useable, yay.
Also holy crap a second and third song(s) on that list - which I was planning to use later. I'd say the genre(s), but that would probably give them away.
PM for spoilers. If you want.
I'm on mobile right now, so I didn't listen to them all yet, but I will do it at home.
EDIT: I marked BIG for a few songs (I only quickly skimmed when I first posted this from work through my phone, earlier) - Darn. I really need to know who used some of these magnificent selections. I can't wait. They just went into my favorites category. Come talk to me people?
EDIT #2: I'll post some comments on Round #17-19 soon - just didn't have enough time recently.

The Sport of Kings and Queens. Wall Ball was also mandatory back in the day. One Judge's rankings in. Since there's 21 songs being judged, expect the scores to be enormous.

Do you think you'll ever turn or you'll be the Iron Sheik of the Season? If your a heel, I imagine Knalisic is the Super Face.
