The Bruins play like garbage at the start of April, gag the division title, sleepwalk through parts of the Leafs series, and then down 3 goals FINALLY decide to give a damn. And of course, they now can do no wrong and are bulletproof. If Matt Frattin makes it 5-2, we're calling Rask a choker who will never win the big one. Now, he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. To be fair it's very common in the modern NHL that teams entering the post seasons in the slump statistically do better then the ones entering on a winning streak. Plus look at all the many Cinderella runs over the years. Since 2002 we had 6 finals featuring a Cinderella team and only 4 where it's the power houses or the solid upper midcarders

I put him there based on previous work. I originally didn't even have him on my list, but then I thought about it. However, thanks for reminding me about Bob. Replace Miller with the #1 cop in town. I also forgot Schneider, Luongo, Hiller, Howard, Rinnie, Elliot, Halak, Backstrom, Reimer, Brodeur, Smith, MAF, Backstrom, Lehtonen. Goalies are more along the lines of what have you been doing for me lately then what you did in the past. They are amazingly inconsistent. Like look at Bryz for examplemor the star of The Mask. The only one on that list you made that has been consistent for a long time is Lundqvist even though they all have the potential of being great for years especially Quick. Edit: cam ward. See how easy it is to forget someone I'd say Niemi is pretty consistent. He's been getting better every year he's been is SJ. In fact, isn't he nominated for the Vezina this year? Sure, Rask, it can be argued is a "newcomer", but I've seen a lot of Bruins games the past two years, and I really believe this guy is the real deal. The only guy on that list who may drop off is Bobrovsky, but he definitely has potential.

See the Kings last year. I bet a lot of the constant FAN NHL thread posters remember, I was ready to jump off a bridge because the team could score worth dick in December, January, and February. We get Jeff Carter and everything came together. By the time June came around, I was on cloud 9.

Supersweet, your 2006 Oilers fall under the statistical slump into playoffs trend.
They didn't exactly light the world afire upon acquired Roloson- in fact, they were 9-7-4 after that and if you include the other games after the Olympic break, were 11-8-5. It was the opposite of the Jeff Carter Kings situation- if anything, many believe they only got into the playoffs that year due to Vancouver falling apart at the seams after the Olympics.
Their West playoff opponents that year actually went into the playoffs hot after the Olympics:
Detroit was 18-3-3 including a 19-game point streak, San Jose was 17-6-3, Anaheim 16-8-1.
I'll go into detail over the 2006 Red Wings tomorrow just to explain how big an upset Edmonton pulled off.

All the more reason for Chicago to finish LA off tonight. We want to be even strength with these Bruins, get them to our place, and give them a series which they really haven't had since the Leafs.

I'm the biggest Bruins homer there is, and in my wildest dreams, I couldn't imagine sweeping the Penguins in such a statistically dominating fashion. What you saw this series was a team impose their will on another team that was universally thought to be superior. I have no idea what happened to the Penguins' big guns this series, but a lot of guys in that locker room have to be questioning themselves. A s far as Iginla goes, It's not so much that he chose Pittsburgh, it's the way that he and/or the Flame front office strung the Bruins along at the 11th hour. It was a dick move and karma bit him in the ass for it. Now, after a lifetime of frustration as a Bruins fan, I get to see my team go for a 2nd cup in 3 years. Damn it feels good.

Word is that if the Blackhawks win tonight, Game 1 starts in Chicago on Wednesday night. If LA win tonight, regardless of the end result of the series, Game 1 will be in either Chicago or Boston next Saturday night.

You really can't separate a good goalie from a good defense either. A good defense helps make a good goalie great while a bad defense can really hurt even a great goalie. Exactly. Brodeur had that great D-core for years in Jersey, Quick has our D-core (when healthy) in front of him, and so on. Bingo. Brodeur had a terrible D outside of a couple of players this season and he didn't look so great compared to years past. And Hedberg looked outright terrible because the D left him hang out to dry so many times. Granted both are old and Hedberg just tried to do way too much, played too many games in a row, and suffered for it. But outside of Larsson (who is still very young and prone to mistakes) and Greene, they didn't have any consistent D to help them out.

I can tell you the exact time and date and where I was and what I did that day when the Oilers qualified for the playoffs and when they acquired Roloson. I remember saying that's it and thought they would get someone better and being obnoxious to my friends that he's not much better then Conklin or Markanen. The Oilers that year were possibly one of the biggest regular season underachievers, they had the second best goals differential that year outside of Detroit! It's even weirder to think that Horcoff and Hemsky had 70 point seasons and Stoll had 66 points. After that concussion he never got his scoring touch again. Hell I remember how many of the locker room actually disliked Pronger and how he did not get along at all with MacTavish. If he had stayed MacTavish would of been gone a long time ago as well with many other players. If Pronger had stayed it would be a way different Oilers and way different NHL

Wow. Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger is apparently fired and Dallas Eakins is expected to be the new headcoach. Press conference in 20 mins. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Like last season before he was the head coach he was the architect of the Oilers PP transforming them from 29th to 3rd and 5th this year. He was the head coach of Switzerland in the Olympics and world teams from 1998-2010 and the Swiss always over achieved and beat Canada a couple of times or put an amazing fight. Plus it's way to early to fire him considering he only worked in the NHL as a coach for two years including a half season as a head coach.
Plus I'm just burnt out that since 2008-2009 to 2013 there has been 4 different head coaches in 5 years and only one GM. It's Kevin Lowe that needs to go. But like I said I'm not sure Marlies had some great AHL success and he was the front runner for Vancouvers coaching job as well with Dallas and NYR.

I mentioned the 2006 Red Wings in a previous post. Here is what made it a huge upset- going into the playoffs, they seemed to have all the checkmarks for a Cup run:
58 wins and 124 points
Offense- 305 goals
Balance- 8 20-goal scorers, a 40-goal scorers, and a defenseman with 20 goals
Power play- 102 goals, 5 players with at least 10 tallies
How you start or finish- started the season 12-1-1, finished the season 19-2-3
Goaltending- 2nd fewest goals allowed, Manny Legace had a 37-8-3 record with 7 shutouts
Taking care of business on the road- 31 road wins, an all-time NHL record
Supersweet, I thought Detroit was gonna go far in 2006- looking back in retrospect, can you really blame most of the experts for liking Detroit's chances?
They were one of the best 5 teams I've seen since 1995-96 to not reach the other Cup Finals- I watched a lot of Center Ice that year and they impressed me at times that year.

I never blame anyone for choosing the best team to do well in the playoffs. In hockey I'm never surprised who does well in the playoffs since hockey seems to have the most cinderellas with deep playoff runs or winning the cup. Hell this shit existed in the 80's and 90's with the 1986 Canadians, 1992-93 Penguins, 1995 Devils, 1996 Panthers, 1997 Capitals, and so on and so on. Nope no new coach is announced but Ralph is fired
