I always got a kick out of how much Jesse hated Hogan when he was at the announce table.

I always got a kick out of how much Jesse hated Hogan when he was at the announce table. As much love as Heenan gets as a color commentator, Jesse's a good several notches above. With Bobby, you never felt like he legitmately hated anyone and was just joking around to get himself over with non-sequitors and quips. With Jesse, you felt he legitimately hated the faces, but he explained his side so well that you could at least respect his point of view. He's easily the greatest color commentator of all time; doesn't matter who he paired up with. Can't say the same about Heenan, who was a bit of a dud when he wasn't paired with Monsoon.

I'll bet you'll get strong disagreement with this statement on this forum. Not that Jesse wasn't a great commentator; he was-I loved his stuff. But Bobby Heenan was great with many others besides Gorilla Monsoon. Ever watch the WCW episode where Heenan refused to talk to Tony Schiavone? Or his AWA stuff? just brilliant.

I really go back and forth on whether I enjoyed Heenan or Ventura more. Heenan was as entertaining as they come, but Ventura constantly made excellent points.

I couldn't care less if my opinion on Heenan is unpopular, or causes heavy disagreement. I've been watching wrestling since the 80s and enjoyed him as a manager just fine. Some of his stuff, like his commentary in the '92 Rumble, is hilarious. But I'd hesitate to use the word "brilliant" when describing a commentator who would frequently bury his co-workers (like he did with Schiavone on more than one occasion), especially when Heenan himself was incredibly stale in the same company. I'm not saying he couldn't be entertaining; when he actually cared about and drew attention to the action in the ring, I'd rank him third on color all-time behind Ventura and Heyman. But when he didn't care about the product (no matter how justified it may have been), he dogged it. He's iconic and funny, but he isn't beyond criticism.

I saw this match between King Kong Bundy and Bam Bam Bigelow on youtube. The best part is at about 4:50 when it ends because it's classic Ventura telling like it is.

He's easily the greatest color commentator of all time; doesn't matter who he paired up with. Can't say the same about Heenan, who was a bit of a dud when he wasn't paired with Monsoon. Nah, Heenan always sounded like he didn't hate Hogan. It was one of the great things about his time with WCW - he carried it over seemlessly. And if Heenan was invested in a feud, the hate came across. He reacted to Perfect's "betrayal" in '92 wonderfully, his teasing of Bossman's mom never sounded silly but just downright cruel at times. And of course, anytime someone wasn't fair to Flair.......he sold it with all he could muster....and then more. (Ok, that got kinda comical at times - especially with Monsoon as his sounding board - but it always worked and you still hated Flair so much more for it...) As for who he was paired off with, his vibe was always strong with Monsoon (though yeah, it got silly - especially in the latter years, and on the set of Prime Time). He worked well with Vince, I thought, though he did expose some of Vince's weaknesses at times. His time with JR was good too. Even countered Savage pretty well when there was a trio calling the action. Ventura, though, was pretty much always a strong color commentator. He never got silly (when he'd crack a laugh it was a heelish dick laugh, or a moment of breaking character a bit that was more special for being so rare), it took it all seriously and sold everything well for it. He was probably all around better than Heenan, but I enjoyed Heenan more for the levity and less serious moments. I totally admit that bias, but at the same time I certainly don't fault Ventura for anything whatsoever - he was all around better.

Dusty Rhodes/Saphire vs Macho Man Randy Savage/Sensational Sherri www.youtube.com/watch?v=w31kxAALuNQ Skip to 2:00 for a funny moment (Albeit a sad match as only 1 person out of the 4 are still with us)

The thing about Jesse is that you could TELL who he hated by his commentary. And I mean legit hated. Dusty and Hogan come first to mind. However, during a WM, he apologized to the fans because he couldn't be partial in a Roddy Piper match. His reason? "That's my Tag Team partner.", making reference to a show they were on together.

I think the best thing is he just called it like someone sitting at home.
That belt shot should have been a disqualification.
These days what you would get is silence because they'd be told to ignore it and gloss over it. But I think having someone like Jesse screaming about it is better because lots of us watching at home would be doing the same thing.

That's why I loved it when he was Guest host on Raw....him hating on Cena for being the face of the company....and his commentary in the main even with Vince was still awesome...he was talking about it like an athletic contest and was putting over some of the lesser guys strengths! Something he did so well....Him and Monsoon make every match they commentated in seem important. Commenting on their strengths...how much they'd improved and how the match affected the title shot contenders!
