Sorry, but this is not true at all. I've had plenty of finely crafted cocktails that didn't have any alcohol taste in them. If you can't taste the alcohol then do you need it in the drink? The answer is actually yes. In a lot of cases the flavor of the spirit meshes perfectly with the other ingredients to make a unique flavor that doesn't have the "burn" or taste of alcohol. For instance you can take Pinnacle Whipped Cream Vodka and mix it with OJ or Sunny D and create a cocktail that has the eame exact characteristics of an orange dreamsicle. There's also a wide variety of shooters like a Washington Apple that have a complex taste that can't be replicated without the alcohol in it.

Alcohol intensifies and adds nuance to flavors, which is why it's used in cooking. You might not notice it in a mixed drink, but it's effecting how you taste everything else.

I'm straight edge so I really haven't drank much in my lifetime anyway but I've had a bit of beer, didn't care for it, and I had an amaretto sour when I was 22 and didn't like it either.

There are certain things that need key ingredients to work. But you could say that about anything. You could say everybody likes orange juice, they just need the right combination of ingredients. I'm not gonna lose any sleep just because I didn't find the right alcoholic drink that doesn't taste like alcohol.

The taste? No
I like being drunk, over the last few years going out all the time, I'll have maybe 1 bad night a year.
But the taste? Not great, so I am a cocktail guy.
If it's not going to be a big night out(club etc), I'll stick to orange juice etc. Like the non drinkers say, if you don't intend to get drunk, why drink? Not to mention the extra cost involved. I can talk to my friends and have fun without it.

Not much of a cocktail kind of guy, but for those bitter liquors, I find that the bitterness is balanced quite well with the company of a good side dish. Stir fried mushrooms with garlic, for instance. Fried siomai with a bit of soy sauce is also good. Of course, if I don't plan on eating that much, then I select a different alcoholic drink to consume. I suppose it's more or less important to get a grasp on what kind of alcohol you want to take for the occasion, even if that occasion is to merely get drunk.
Without a side dish, my go to drink has to be the mango rum they sell here. The bitter taste is very nicely covered by taste of mangos. I was almost surprised when I tried it out, since one time I had lemon vodka and could barely notice the lemon flavor. Anyway, it still has that flavor I can attribute to alcohol, but the sweetness balances well with the rum.

people always give me a strange look when I say I don't drink. It's not a moral or religious thing. I just don't like the tatse or what it does to me so I prefer not to drink it.

I didn't when I first tried it. Now, I like all sorts of alcoholic beverages, from wines (Rieslings and Moscato) to mead to various types of beer to coconut rum and coke to mojitos. The taste was acquired over time, just like my taste for various foods that I didn't like when I was younger.

Also, ingredient wise, pork barbecue marinated with salt and gin tastes great.

People who focus on the taste of alcohol are missing the point. It's like saying you don't like sex because you don't like the smell.

I am bewildered by the logic, or lack thereof, used by some in this thread.
Having two beers and then swearing off all alcohol is utterly baffling.
And the comparisons to ketchup or "Cutting out the middle man"?!?!
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

I like vodka and whiskey. Can't stand beer, though.

I'm not a fan of beer at all. I just find it either tastes of piss, or soapy water. Much prefer Whiskey if I'm going to drink, which isn't that often.

Nothing really baffling about people not being interested.

It's not a law of nature that humans must need alcohol in someway in their bodies . Is it that hard to accept that not everybody likes booze? Not everybody likes chocolate, but I don't see this as strange and asked them why not.

It's not a law of nature that humans must need alcohol in someway in their bodies . Is it that hard to accept that not everybody likes booze? Not everybody likes chocolate, but I don't see this as strange and asked them why not. You obviously misunderstand, so I will spell it out. I am baffled by people who could have "two beers" and then declare their hatred for all alcoholic beverages. Because see, I have had way more than "two beers". I have had dozens of different beers (maybe hundreds, barely). Beer, if you did not know, widely diverse. There are THOUSANDS of different beers in HUNDREDS of styles with flavors and tastes that are all over the map. It is akin to someone writing off a musical genre after hearing two shitty songs, or writing off pro-wrestling because they saw a shitty match. That doesn't make sense, does it? You guys know better, right? Ok. So, yes it is hard to accept someone "not liking booze" after sipping "two beers" because that is a gross generalization formed in sheer ignorance. Keep in mind, that I am talking beer here, which doesn't include the wide variety of wines, spirits, ciders, and cocktails. The odds and my experiences suggests that there is a chance that there is an alcoholic drink out there that you would like. One of my first beers was a Heineken. One of the skunkiest beers I have ever had. If I had judged all beers (or all alcohol) just on that one beer, I would have missed out on some OUTSTANDING beer. An example would be Southern Tier Pumking which tastes like pumpkin pie, another would be New Holland's Dragon's Milk which I think tastes like chocolate milk. I could keep going here...

I have what some people would call "wussy" taste in drinks. I usually drink light beer, wine or fruity vodkas if I have the choice, and most of the time I'll opt for water, an orange juice or a coke.
