why do you want wrestlers to be visibly angry?

I don't understand that. Okay, so you're watching a show and wrestler A has been pretty much no selling his heel opponents taunts during their interview, smiling and chuckling. He doesn't seem mad at all. But then they wrestler and he beats him mercilessly with a chair. Doesn't that show he probably is angry? Why does it have to refelct in his promos. Why can't he be logical, or try to get under his opponents skin?

Simple: because when people are angry about something then they often act pissed off. If somebody came up to you and insulted everything you stand for, would you stand there and chuckle about it or would you stick up and defend yourself?

There's nothing wrong with getting in a few smart remarks as long as you still act like you're upset by what happened and sell the effects of the promo, not just through your actions afterwards. Some of the greatest feuds in the past were all about one wrestler being pissed off at the other and making sure they did everything they could to make sure they knew it and then get revenge for what happened to them. I can guarantee there were very few main event caliber programs that drew money that revolved around the babyface smiling and laughing as the heel insulted him over and over.

I don't have a problem with having them trying to get under their opponent's skin every now and then and I'm not saying they should always get pissed off at everything that happens to them, such as if it's just petty jabs or something not worth getting too upset about, but they should still occasionally show that they are human beings that have actual emotions; not like Cena, for example, who almost always blows it off, signaling that he's either repressing his feelings which is far from the healthiest thing to do or he's some sort of robot.

The best promos have always been the ones where you can feel what the wrestlers are feeling which makes you want to get behind them and see them succeed; the only thing I want to do when I see a babyface giggling like a child and spouting juvenile toilet humor after a guy just insulted him is punch them square in the face.

I don't like a guy getting insulted and beaten up weekly and having his fiance rape-threatened repeatedly and just grinning about it. Of course it shouldn't be 'THE HELL YOU SAY!? AHHHH GONNA f*** YOU UP' every time around, but find a balance. Maybe think "how about an actual person react to this" once in a while. An actual person in Daniel Bryan's position would be pretty fed up, but he just laughs about everything, and waits for Big Show to save the day so he can hit his knee and say YES a bunch of times.

While a babyface getting bent out of shape over every heel insult would be pretty stupid, it admittedly wouldn't make for a very sympathetic character if he never acted like anything really affected him and just shrugged and laughed while he beat up the heel.

But the thing is, there's only been one character in recent memory truly guilty of being that infamous backwards robot, and that was face Sheamus. Cena's had countless (recent) moments of him getting pissed off, and roughly half of his promos involve him giving some sort of spirited defense of his ideals/accomplishments and whatnot. I think he only gets attention for his cocky shruggy promos because his charisma amplifies everything he does so much.

There are wrestlers who should never look angry. Sheamus, for example, is at his best when he sells his hatred by smiling like a psychopath and running down the ring giggling like a little kid totally stocked that he gets to slaughter a jobber.

That said, sometimes you need a character to be angry to show that the angle matters to him.

That's a fair point. But it's a show about "fighting", so to me that means they need to act like that fake fight is going to tear the roof off the place with intensity. I certainly don't want to hear "I respect him and I've had a great training camp and it is what it is" promos. That a lot more acceptable when you know the guys are actually going to be kicking the crap out of each other in the cage/ring/what have you. But even then, I'd definitely rather hear them saying crazy shit about how they're going to eat each other's kids and stuff. Mike Tyson and Clubber Lang could sell some serious PPVs.

yet, outside of GSP, it's the explosive angry dudes who draw the most money and interest. Lesnar vs Mir, the top money making UFC match in history, was completely drawn on the promise of Lesnar wanting to end Mir, and Mir saying he hoped Brock would be UFC's first in-cage death. Same goes for Rampage vs Rashad, Tito vs Chuck, Sonnen vs Silva, and even Diaz vs GSP. Passivity makes for boring drama.

I was talking more from a character perspective. If you just had a company full of angry dudes, it would look pretty forced. Just like in real life, people have different emotions and approach things from different angles. Sure I'd like Bryan to amp the intensity up a few notches, but I don't see what's so bad about him joking around either. That's a pretty realistic response to me, as many people try to do that even if the World is taking a dump on them.

I agree, across the board. But on top, anger and revenge is always what's drawn in the end in feuds, not WWE's schlocky attempts to have faces amused rather than furious. Hell, Bryan was more angry in the summer with the self-perceived weak-link stuff than he is for the Authority ruining his life. It's inconsistent writing. He's suddenly not a nutcase with a short fuse, during his most heavily persecuted point? Makes no sense.

I'd honestly rather see them having fun.

Anger is a very easy emotion to go to as a performer AND over-use horribly, which is what a lot of wrestlers do. "What you bumped into me on accident?" AAAANNNNGGGGERRRRRRR!!!!RAWR!!!! I'd rather see them try subtler emotions like crestfallen or something like that.
