*Note, I made a mistake with a pm concerning the scores. Due to that mistake, the winning teams have changed . The contestants will be notified and the Elimination Round will play out with those contestants. My apologies to those contestants and that team.
The Battle of the FANs has concluded and what a battle it was! In front of friends, family members, FAN Members, and the assorted hobos and derelicts that lurk the FAN Compound, the eight remaining FAN Idol contestants tore the house down.
(He particularly loved the Opening Act songs)
Gus Richlen, Inuyasha Mark dressed up in the highest of Visual Kei style and, amidst the screaming fan girls and Tyson Kidd (what a puro mark), provided satin-smooth Japanese vocals on his covers off such anime songs as ANGELUS, Fukai Mori, and Aoki Yasei O Daite. Mr. Richlen would further quicken the hearts in the audience with a few lightning fast demonstrations of his impressive sword technique, handling his replica Tessaiga with ease even as he hit the highest of high notes. Tyson Kidd would gush over the performance, telling his negligee-clad wife Natalya stories about the particular lilt of Gus's voice, comparing it to an elaborate submission hold smoothly applied by the legendary Tatsumi Fujinami, much to Natalya's chagrin.
Not to be outdone, Orangetuan took to his custom synthezier, a priceless XTk model custom created from sundry materials taken from remains of rock group KISS's ill-fated Detroit 1, a pleasure helicopter that crashed into Gene Simmon's Tongue shaped pool on its maiden journey. Painted Orange, sporting a painted whisker from Peter Criss's cat face, and employing dyes made from seventeen varieties of the citrus fruit, including the Shamouti Masry and Khettmali, the synth produced a fine sound that lent a solid backbone to the ear-worm new wave hits and Lo-fi experimental songs his band thrilled the audience with. Orangetuan would find particular success by incorporating exotic tribal beats played on his homeland on Orangetuan Island.
Alongside his band leader, Knailsic Loves to Boogie lent an air of musical authority with his leisurely paced bass playing, sporting a Music Man Stingray (the words "If Anyone Touches My Stuff, I'll Kill You" written on the back in black spray paint) that he "borrowed" from ex-Pixie and current Breeder Kim Deal after helping the latter fend off a group of irradiated mutant Frogmen in an undisclosed Puerto Rican coastal town. While the gifted musician strummed away, shaking the stage with his notes, Mr. B. Natural: High Flyer countered with his own bass-y goodness, rocking out on a hollowed-out Carl Thompson Bass that he won from Primus' Les Claypool after besting him in a fly fishing tournament, landing a monstrous rainbow trout that would influence the Bass's color scheme. Mr. B. would add that to the rest of his Nature based musical instruments, including a violin with nearly unbreakable spider web strings and a turtle shell bass drum. Bass Fight! Pick vs. Slap bass, lightning fast vs. glacial slow.
As tranquil as a lamb grazing in a meadow, Pegasus Warrior tuned out the cacophony around him and, bathed underneath a stark light, calmly played his syrinx. An ancient wood-wind instrument much favored by Greek shepherds, the syrinx, in Pegasus Warrior's capable hands, mimicked bubbling brooks and fleecy clouds blown by the wind. When needed, however, the calm airs would thunder and clash, filling the air with startling power. Evocative, calling to the musical Gods for inspiration, the syrinx echoed throughout the building, only to wrestle with the bleating trumpet twirled in Canadian Mafia's deft hands. Bequeathed to the young jazzman by the incomparable Fred Stone, the trumpet dipped and rose in tone, the notes racing from Canadian Mafia's mouth and breaking past High C notes, one octave higher and higher, screeching at a register that shook the lights and danced upon the listening audience's ears. Canadian Mafia's sound was so wild and funky that it caused Ernest "The Cat" Miller to start dancing hither and thither until his Mama had to be called to collect his dancing self from the moss pit.
Inside an advant-garde set piece of iridescent floating cubes and interlocking brass triangles, Square moved his hands along a thermin used by film soundtrack maestro Bernard Hermann for the Hitchcock suspense classic "Spellbound". Square was casting some magic of his own, enchanting the audience with the mathematical precision of his free-flowing hands, creating great electronic pulses of sound, the sound a mysterious space craft would make upon landing on the Earth's surface. His eyes closed, Square became one with the musical formula etching itself around him, the pulsing sound flaring up like atomic fire. Gretchen Weiners would disrupt all that with the plucking of her electronic harpsichord, newly fashioned for this battle, the former Ms. Daggers learning to play this intimidating musical throwback in order to best complete her temporary band mate's sound. Disrupting Square's concentration and plucking out sweet electronic notes to bewitch the audience, Gretchen capped off a fine musical performance by both groups.
(How the Thermin works. The Thermin is probably most famous for its use in The Beach Boys' Good Vibrations. I have no idea how it works.)
So, who won? Who survived the Battle of the FANs?
Here's where it gets interesting, deliciously so.
Only 1 point separated the two groups. One.
Two Rounds, 5 judges, 9 total categories, and only one point separates the two teams. Everyone playing this Round should be proud of what they contributed musically. This was by far the hardest Round yet this Season and probably the hardest Round I've ever hosted. As Pegasus Warrior said, at this point in the game, we need Rounds of this level of difficulty because we're only at 8 contestants and anyone can win this. FAN Idol has never had a final eight as accomplished as the one playing right now. There have been some amazing contestants over the years but, in Season IX, we have winners, runner-ups, and promising new comers all playing at a high level. So, with that in mind, barring the use of the Save, we will be saying goodbye to a very talented player and the competition will just continue to increase.
The winning team, earning a total of 680 points, just one point more than the runner-up at 679 is...
You are the Runner-up team for Round 31: The Battle of the FANs. All four of you have helped to make this Season a grand spectacle. You have won Rounds, you have escaped elimination, you have brought us unexpected musical offerings and turned our ear to some unbelievable musicians. One point was just enough to pull victory from your grasp and maybe it's fitting because I can't imagine trying to figure out what to do in the case of a tie, though I was hoping that would be the outcome, just to see how maddening the game would become. Something rather interesting has occurred, something that I will reveal shortly. However, let's start with the highest scorer for Team Orangeutan.

Something rather interesting has occurred, something that I will reveal shortly. However, let's start with the highest scorer for Team Orangeutan.
Earning a total of 180 points is...
{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Orangeutan!!! who earned a total of 180 pts and 3rd place overall, taking 76 points this Round. Orangeutan chose Drowning Pool's Bodies (Fighting, 28 pts, 14th) and Besides the Sea by Mountain (Live at Woodstock '69, 48 pts, T-6th).
Here's where it gets interesting...
Knailsic Loves to Boogie earned a total of 173 points... as did Square!!!
Knailsic Loves to Boogie earned his 173 points by selecting Black Sabbath's Mob Rules (with Dio & Vinnie Appice; Line-up, 42 pts and 7th), as well as Sister Midnight by Iggy Pop (Krautrock Inspired, 39 points, 8th)
while
Square earned his 173 pts, 99 this Round and T-4th, by employing the Yeah Yeah Yeah's Mystery Girl (Pre-fame, 51 points, 5th) and Franz Ferdinand (Back-up, 48 pts, 6th)
However, like the last Three Way Dance Elimination Round, we need to give the lowest scoring member of the team a chance to fight it out.
Earning a total of 153 points, 82 for this Round, and 6th place is Pegasus Warrior, who fulfilled his categories with Dashboard Confessional's Vindicated (Fame, 30 pts, 13th) and Not the Doctor by Alanis Morissette (Grammy, 52 pts, 4th).
So, we're in for a treat here! Three great contestants, two former FAN Idols, one a multi-winner, facing off against each other and a fantastic talent who made it deep into the incredibly competitive Season VII!!!
Give everyone a hand for an amazing Round and wish the Elimination Sing-Off contestants good luck!
