I think the last season I regularly watched included the trip to London.

They still crank out a few good episodes every now and then, but it's been a long, long time since they had a good season.
IMO, the last great season? 8. Last overall good season? 10.

Season 8 is an amazing season, but when you watch season 9 with it back to back the drop off in quality is SHARP. There are elements of greatness in 9 and 10, and then 11 is where things just fall off a cliff entirely. f*** you, Mike Scully.

Season 1 is still the very best Simpsons season Season 1 is awful. Infact, I believe that Season 1 Simpsons to Season 2 Simpsons is the biggest quality jump a show has ever taken.

I'll also show some love for Season 1 (and 2, for that matter). Granted, it's a completely different show than what it'd eventually become, but I always liked its more heartfelt/dramatic aspect mixed with the inherent biting satire. Plus Lisa, while still a prodigy, acts more like a typical kid.

Season 9 for me. Season 10 was a mixed bag, and Season 11 was pretty poor.
Then when Al Jean took over again the show improved, but it's never had a "great" season since then. Some good episodes, some bad episodes.

I wanna say season 9.
I remember buying all of the season dvd sets. Got to the 10th season and only enjoyed like 6 episodes on it. Never got the rest.

I've always thought the moment The Simpsons jumped the shark was when they did the "Behind the Music" parody in Season 11. After that, it starts to go downhill from there.

For the first couple years, Simpsons really seemed like an animated sitcom that didn't really NEED to be animated (much like King Of The Hill.) They had some absurdist ideas, but overall.. it was pretty much just a sitcom that only used the fact it was animated to get away with a few things you couldn't do in a live-action show.
Around season three or four, they seemed to realize and take full advantage of the fact it was a cartoon, they could do ANYTHING with it even if it made no sense. They could have the entire world blow up in one episode, then the next one act as if nothing ever happened. That's when it really started to shine.
However, ideas run thin and sometimes you take what made the show great and start running too freely with it. I would agree Season 12 is the last great season as after that, I no longer saw watching the new episodes as a priority. There are still one or two great episodes per season... but it's almost surprising when you run into one, almost like a "I need to take to the internet to declare this to be the best least-bad episode I've seen in a while!"
I really think it was Dana Gould who took it over the edge, I have no real examples of it... just I remember his appearances on the credits is when my interest started to take a decline.

Looking up his name on Wiki... turns out he's a bit of a mixed bag for me. Couple of episodes I liked ("Homer The Moe", "C.E.D'oh"), one I REALLY don't care for ("The President Wore Pearls") and the rest are meh.

Season 10. Saying Season 8 I think is a bit unfair, because you could take any other season from the show and put it after season 8 and it wouldn't quite stack up. Maybe Season 6? Not sure. But 8 just has so many classic episodes that using it as an endpoint for the show's apogee doesn't consider that it sort of was the apogee in and of itself.

It's a damn shame there are more "okay" episodes than amazing ones. I used to enjoy watching in syndication, but now declining quality episodes outnumber the good early seasons. Nothing is worse than watching a newer episode that has 2 genuine laughs and ZERO charm. That's basically the only reason why I bought the DVDs.
The Simpsons to me was always more than just "funny". I cared about the situations most times and at the end of the day, it made you care. Now? It's continually going through the motions. A show that's funny with no substance is not good. If I wanted that, I'd watch America's Funniest Home Videos.
