Cardinals are close to signing Peralta. Can't be anything but a plus. His field pct. at SS isn't much lower than Kozma's, plus his offensive WAR isn't in the negatives.

I don't know how I feel about this McCann deal. He will definitely help the team out in the short term and it could work out that if Gary Sanchez is ready in 2 or 3 years, you move McCann to first and let Teixeira walk when his contract ends after 2016. Assuming Selig doesn't manage to get A Rod banned for good, he will be set at DH til his contract ends in 2017. Can't complain too much about the money I think its an overpay but like Cano and Ellsbury he gets lucky by coming out in a really bad year for free agents. I do worry that he could be liability if he's still actually playing catcher at age 36. I don't like losing the draft pick with it being the earliest pick the Yankees would have had since 05 and now it makes me hope that they let one of their 3 QO's (Cano, Granderson and Kuroda) sign elsewhere so we can still get a decent pick. Granderson is definitely going elsewhere. The qualifying offer was pretty much just a risk betting on that happening so they'd get a draft pick as compensation. And it paid off. Not sure about Kuroda, but I'm pretty sure Cano will come back to the Yankees. No one's going to give him 10 years/$300 million. And the high budget teams out there already have quality second basemen (Detroit, Boston, Dodgers), can't afford another really bad contract on the books (Angels) or are just cheap (Mets).

The Angels and Joe Smith have agreed on a three-year contract for around $15 million, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports.
Scott Boras has kept an open dialogue with the Red Sox about Jacoby Ellsbury, according to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.

His range is rather unspectacular, but he's a massive upgrade over Kozma. I still think they should go all out for Tulo instead, because Tulo is a star and they have the space/prospects for him. Weren't there reports saying that Kuroda was going back to Japan? No.

Wish McCann all the best, but this thing about McCann being the fun police is pure BS

Well he not getting no 300 million from them I don't think he's getting that from anyone. Yeah, he's not getting that from anybody. The Dodgers were the only team I could have seen giving him that contract, but the signing of Alex Guerrero destroyed Cano's shot of getting $300 million from them. As for the McCann signing, f***. I don't think he'll last long, his attitude is going to cause a fight with the Yankees, and the first time a Red Sox player hits a homerun, he's going to start a fight. And losing a pick to get him? Come on Yankees, you've got to build through the Draft, it's how 3 of the Core Four came about, Rivera was a free agent signing as an amateur.

I'm all in favor of this. Jeff isn't getting any better if he keeps having that one melt-down inning every game. (I call it the James Baldwin effect. Guy was great - provided he never had to pitch in the 4th inning.)

As a Cards fan that bashed Ortiz in the World Series as a cheater, I absolutely hate the Peralta signing. Guy is a cheater. Having the Birds on the Bat uniform doesn't change that or my opinion of him. He cheated his way to a nice contract. Going to be hard to root for him

For $10M, the White Sox should have at least taken a crack at him, pitching depth or not. There's only so many times you can bounce Hector Santiago around from starter-to-bullpen seemingly every other month.
(I know, they don't know about Konerko yet, 3B & catching is an issue, etc. Can never have enough pitching.)

And he had a great defense behind him. Nats paid $13 mil last season for a 7-12 pitcher. I thought as a result, he would get maybe half that. Instead he got $10 million which is absurd.

The Twins "remain very high on Bronson Arroyo" and may be able "to get him on a two-year deal," according to MLB Trade Rumors' Tim Dierkes.
General manager John Mozeliak on Monday defended his decision to sign Jhonny Peralta to a four-year, $53 million contract.
"Character and makeup are something we weigh into our decision-making," Mozeliak said. "In his case, he admitted what he did, he took responsibility for it. ... I feel like he has paid for his mistakes, and obviously if he were to make another one, then it would be a huge disappointment." Peralta, 31, was suspended for 50 games this past season following MLB's Biogenesis investigation. Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler, a union player representative, tweeted that "it pays to cheat" and wrote that owners were "encouraging PED use." David Aardsma tweeted: "I had 2 major surgeries in 5 months and made it back clean, nothing pisses me off more than guys that cheat and get raises for doing so."
