Alright, so here's a weird topic.
Over the past couple months, my friend's been working on changing his "image", and to start this he recently shaved off his beard and shaved his head down. It's a damn good start because it's helped out his look tremendously, and I think a change of clothes would benefit him greatly.
Question is, how do I go about this?
It may be very cut and dry to just suggest it to him, but he's never made any mention to updating his clothes, and I don't want to sound like either an
A) Asshole who thinks he knows how other people should dress
or
B) A pushy girlfriend who thinks she knows what's best for him.
I just really think an updated wardrobe would suit him, because he's dressed the same for as long as I've known him (nearly 10 years) and I think a different style outlook would suit him a lot better than big graphic shirts and cargo pants.
So, FAN, am I making this more complicated then it needs to be, or should I just not worry about it altogether? I kind of tend to over-complicate things, so if that's the case please tell me.

Next time he goes shopping, just go with him and make a few recommendations. If he's enthusiastic, make more. If not, just let him do his own thing regarding fashion.

Just tell him if he's serious about changing his image some new threads would go a long way. Dress shirts and nice jeans never go out of style and you can dress it up nicely with a tie and vest easily.

I'm definitely digging the advice given by you and Hit Girl, but my only problem with that is dress (or dress-ish) shirts and jeans is how I dress lately, so I don't want him to think I'm telling him to dress just like me, you know?

Easy. Wear plaid. All I wear is band shirts or long sleeved collared plaid shirts with the sleeves rolled in. Plus who cares if he has the same fashion sense that you do. You're a dude. Dude's fashion is limited to t shirts, hoodies, hats, collared shirts, polo's, jeans, and maybe a brand name. Just tell him straight up you dress like a nerdy basement dwelling neckbeard. Go out and dress to impress and dress what you're comfortable in and when you think it's comfortable you're going to look into the mirror and be like damn dawg I look SUPA FLY, then you get the confidence because you know you look and feel damn good. On how to tell him just go by being yourself but be more assertive but assertive on your comfort level. Basically show that you care and you love helping out and want to know whats best. Be blunt but not pushy.

Sweaters with the zipper neck are always a winner if you're in a colder climate.

I'd say you already effed up.
Popular fashion is so fake and stupid that by the time you re-christen your bro, whatever he was doing before might come back around to where you're just depriving him of non-poseur privelages.

Make plans to bring him to a clothing store like Uni Qlo. Make it an hour of picking out new stuff with him, for you and him. Once he sees himself in new clothes in the fitting room, and how great it feels to complete a new look, he'll get it.
Or just show him episodes of "To Catch a Predator" where the perpetrators in question are dressed just like him and he'll get the hint. That's the best way to get the last reluctant few to quit wearing jorts.

This is actually how I think all makeover/interventions should be handled. "I'm here, dude.....Hey, wh....where is everybody? I thought we were having a party?" "Why don't you go ahead and have a seat."

I think I'll offer to bring him shopping the next time I go clothes shopping and suggest things to him. If he goes for it he goes for it, and if he doesn't he doesn't.

I guess the best mind set of choosing good clothes is if it feels comfortable (mentally) and makes you feel good then it's good. If you're confident you can wear it get it. It's like how I can rock a stache 12 months a year because I look dead sexy and I'm confident and not afraid of going out with it that nobody bats an eye.

That's really how I am lately. I tried on a plaid shirt in JC Penney a while ago, got to looking at it and thought "now that's not half bad!" Since then I've bought exclusively plaid and single color collared shirts, like this purple one here. Does it look bad? Hey, maybe, but I feel better in it than I do t-shirts, so that's what I do. Plus, collars are cool.

(it looks blue to me since I am colour blind and almost have no idea how purple looks like half the time )

"Why don't you go ahead and have a seat." "Hey! I just came here to get a handjob from a 16 year old. Not spend a ton of money on a new wardrobe!" This is how it unfolds in my head.
