I don't get The Grammys. Ed Sheeran is nominated for best new artist, yet he was nominated last year for best song. The lack of The 20/20 Experience is baffling and going by past trends, Kendrick Lamar will lose every category he's in, especially Best New Artist which will go to not Macklemore but Kasey Musgraves.

Yeah, that's pretty much the rule for the Best New Artist category. They'll always choose the most obscure or least mainstream artist of the ones available. It's like they can't get enough of super-popular artists for every other major category, but turn into hipsters for BNA.

I'm still constantly baffled why best new artist exists, there's no rules to it. Like someone pointed out earlier, Ed Sheeran gets nominated despite getting grammy nominations last year.

I like Macklemore but it would be f***ing ridiculous if he won anything over Kendrick Lamar. It took me a while to catch on but I'm a believer in King Kendrick. So, of course Macklemore will sweep. My biggest problem with Macklemore as an artist is that his flow feels really off. Don't really like his rhyming or just his voice in general. I also think he gets made a big deal out of because he's white and raps about social justice issues. You know the media's been itching to crown Eminem's successor as "the next great white rapper" and Macklemore's in the right place at the right time. I also hate how a lot of people treat him like he's the only rapper who's ever used his rap as social commentary, especially since a lot of these people don't even listen to hip-hop beyond Macklemore and maybe one or two other artists. Rap has a rich history of social commentary dating back to its inception. I mean, I like the guy as a person. He seems like a real decent dude and I respect him for the stands he takes. I just don't like his music at all. Hell, even if I liked Macklemore's music, Kendrick Lamar's album just kills it in every category. I really don't think Macklemore's whiteness is a factor. In the past five or so years, there's been such a bigger industry push from "great white hypes" like MGK, Sam Adams, Asher Roth and even from larger indie outfits pushing Mac Miller. Despite this, not a single one of them has come remotely close to what Macklemore's done entirely independently. If people were really just dying to have "another big white rapper," they've had countless options that just never caught on. The Macklemore fanbase seems really organic. Further, I think the social justice issues critique is a bit of seeing the forest for the trees. More than anything, his makes "concept" songs. Every song on 'The Heist' is about something. They don't necessarily have a message, but they have a theme. It just so happens two of his social issues-themed ones caught on. Again, I wouldn't call this him being opportunistic, and covering such issues especially in hip-hop is loaded with plenty of obstacles, but he happened to strike a chord with people. I see nothing wrong with that. And his flow comes from being highly influenced by Freestyle Fellowship/Good Life Cafe west coast artists, which is typically not heard over the type of beats that Ryan Lewis makes. If anyone's the reason for their success though, I think it is Lewis as his productions are incredibly infectious.

Are both 20/20 Experience albums being counted as one? Because that would explain the surprising lack of nominations. Part 1 was fantastic, and part 2 just sounds like a bunch of leftovers from the cutting room floor of the first one.

I'll give Ryan Lewis a lot of credit on the production side of things. His beats are super catchy.
As far as the social justice thing, I blame his fans for that far more than Macklemore himself. I like that he takes those stands and I respect him a lot for it. If his music becomes a vehicle to those causes to gain traction, more power to him. What I don't like is how his fans and even some media types who should know better act like he's the only rapper to ever fight for social justice. It reeks of ignorance of hip-hop's legacy and history.

Why don't they have much rock or metal awards? Yet there's like seven jazz awards.

That Lorde chick must be pushing 40 I don't even know who she is. I had to look her up and she is apparently a 17 year old from New Zealand. I listen to different varieties of music and I have never heard that song before.

How did Janelle Monae not receive any nominations? That's absurd.

No way in hell Macklemore wins album of the year. It would completely shift the record label/artist dichotomy in a way that would scare the shit out of every label president.

That Lorde chick must be pushing 40 I don't even know who she is. I had to look her up and she is apparently a 17 year old from New Zealand. I listen to different varieties of music and I have never heard that song before. Yeah, she's got a real Sinead O'Connor thing going. I've heard Royals a couple of times on the radio before I found out how successful it was. It's pretty good and catchy, but I don't know if it deserves all the praise it's getting. But that's just me. As for Macklemore, he seems like a cool dude and I like his attitude, but if you ask me, I think most of the success of "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us" actually comes from the production and the choruses. So in a way, Macklemore himself is the 'third wheel'. Not saying the guy isn't talented or that his lyrics don't play a factor to his success, but EVERYONE that I know, some who are even avid hip-hop/rap fans and can rap along to even the fastest rappers, I only find bopping their head to the beat and singing along to the chorus. When it comes time for Macklemore's verses, they don't react.
