Die Hard is my favourite "it's set at Christmas but isn't about Christmas". However, I have to admit, although they're not as good as Die Hard, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are high on the list too. My favourite "Christmas Film" is The Muppet Christmas Carol.

Well if we're going to be "cute" and mention "Christmas movies that aren't about Christmas" like Die Hard, I'll go with First Blood. There's Christmas decorations all over! Therefore it's a Christmas movie!
Seriously though, I've got to stick with the classics, and say a tie for first place: The Christmas Story and A Christmas Carol.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend "Rare Exports". Imagine a cross between "A Christmas Story" and "Army of Darkness".

I am kind of tired of the "Die hards a christmas movie" shit. Yeah, sort of but no, not it's not.
Christmas with the Kranks is my favorite.

I guess I'll go with Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life.
As far as a film taking place during Christmas or the Holidays, but not actually a Christmas/Holiday movie, I'm going to give you a big swerve...that would be my favorite film, Psycho. It's been my avatar image forever, though I recently changed it to honor Joan Fontaine. An on-screen graphic in Psycho tells you it takes place 'December 11' and some of the shots of Phoenix used in the film show Christmas decorations in the city. Obviously this story could have taken place during any month and I'm not trying to call this a Holiday movie by any stretch.

Lethal Weapon
As far as actual Christmas movies, It's a Wonderful Life.

For actual movies. I'd probably list A Christmas Story, and most traditional versions of A Christmas Carol.
As for a Christmas special, to me, nothing beats A Muppet Family Christmas, for quality and nostalgia. I mean, I grew up as a HUGE Muppet fan (still am), and when you combine the Muppets with Sesame Street with Fraggle Rock and even a touch of freaking Muppet Babies in there? You've pretty much wrapped my entire childhood into a 40 minute special. It's one of the few Christmas specials I know that is actually, kinda special to me.

Home Alone 1 is pretty hard to beat. Also put another vote down for It's A Wonderful Life. I also think The Christmas Story is very good but I would not put it on that top tire of Christmas movies as most people do.

Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in NY. Both great kids movies I still enjoy without nostalgia goggles.

Actual Christmas movie: Elf.
Set at Christmas but not really a Christmas movie: On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Christmas Evil
Probably the most legit respectful of Christmas and Santa-mythology any horror/slasher film actually got.
If you haven't seen it, it's like a Christmas version of "Dexter." A Christmas-obsessed guy finally snaps, dresses up as Santa and becomes a vigilante, not only punishing the "naughty" people in his town, but bringing gifts for the good ones.
Don't look up the "Trailer" on YouTube though, it's a fanmade one with music not characteristic of the movie at all and spoils the entire thing.
