And that is the best way to handle it.
Acknowledge that he existed. Don't advertise it.

I imagine that they are still going to clip most of the positive commentary and any major head bumps on his matches, making them virtually unwatchable anyway.

That's gonna be one dark "Don't try this at home" advisory.

That's gonna be one dark "Don't try this at home" advisory. I sniggered. To be serious, WWE's always had a tough job with how to go about it and if they feel comfortable with keeping footage intact and putting out a warning, it'll at least give people the decision on whether they want to see it as this thread has already demonstrated. Hopefully it sets a precedence that we never have to bring up again.

I don't recall WWE ever cutting out head bumps from Benoit matches, they might do a freeze frame on the moment of impact, but not out and out removal.

Can't imagine the 'advisory' being much more than a black screen with a disclaimer written on it. It's weird picturing any kind of video promo beforehand.
Also, Screwberry's right in that they'll probably use the DVD edits. That likely means Benoit's entrance is skipped and any 'positive' commentary about him is removed.

They should just have Chris Benoit specific shows featured obnoxiously late at night like a skin flick. An intro that consists of scattered footage from various news programs set to black metal and simply call it the best of Chris Benoit.

I bet this is more out of laziness than any sort of moral decision =P.
Now they can show whatever they want without fiddling with editing, while just throwing up one reusable premade warning before any shows Benoit is on.

I wonder what the advisory will actually say. Will it be something similar to the one they use for Classics on Demand ("this program is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children")? Or will they explicitly mention Benoit? Something like "This program contains footage of pro wrestler Chris Benoit. Viewer discretion is advised."

Honestly, I think that factors into it too as bad as that'll sound. Why have people on tweaking footage when you can have them do more effective jobs? This is the same company that pumped money and manpower into blurring every WWF logo they could see when it would be wasted by the beginning of 2013 anyway. Different situations, sure, but WWE is still a company that would rather have its resources put in more important places.

I would have thought something like "Disclaimer: WWE does not wish to condone the actions of Chris Benoit, nor does it wish to promote his life in a positive light. Some footage of and commentary relating to Mr. Benoit has been removed from the following broadcast."

"This program contains archival footage of Chris Benoit. By showing this footage, WWE does not endorse Mr. Benoit's actions as it relates to the circumstances behind his death on June 23rd, 2007, we are simply presenting this footage for the sake of completion. However, certain lines of commentary and footage that may be perceived as promoting Mr. Benoit or glorifying his life have been altered to ensure responsibility on our part. WWE would also like to ask that parents show discretion in regards to this program, and encourage you to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE for further information about domestic violence. We thank you for your understanding"
