I don't think he was as big as people think he was in 2005.
HOWEVER, in the waning days of WWECW and for a short while beyond its closure, I believe that Christian was the best wrestler in the world. He was adapting to every size of guy and having great matches every time out.

Freaking love the guy and will never forget what he did for me personally, in addition to being a fan of his in ring stuff (I really started to take notice of his skills when he went to TNA). #1 Favorite for all time.

As an in ring worker, Christian was best as a face, but as a personality, he was only allowed to shine as a heel. I really think that a face version of Captain Charisma would've made an excellent top level face.

Are you at liberty to comment on this? He's damn good, always has been. At this point I feel like he needs to hang it up, since he's always hurt and his style has always been high impact. The biggest problem with him since his return in 2009 is lack of promo time. The only time he got any was as a whiny "one more match" heel that was consistently emasculated by Randy Orton. He's such a good talker, but Vince doesn't think he looks cool enough while he's talking so...silent wrestling guy it is. TNA is where he shined in the promo department, because he was allowed to be a heel but actually come off as capable and theatening, instead of a joke. In the ring, he reminds me of Billy Kidman, back when Kidman was really good in WCW. Always cutting a good pace, creating new wrinkles, tons of signature spots that he could mix in and play with the audience's expectations. The afformentioned Orton feud, while I thought it did make him look like a loser, showed how great he is at putting together a match, as did his run as ECW champ which was simply awesome to watch. The matches he dragged out of green Jack Swagger, Tommy Dreamer, Zack Ryder, etc. were damn impressive. He's one of those underrated ring generals, he's never really mentioned as one of those like a Bret Hart or Triple H but he definitely is one. So, he's a great talker. Great wrestler. But, didn't have "the" look. So he never got his due.

A poll with 10 choices and you can pick up to 5? Sounds like some people are really confused about what to think about Christian.
I liked his TNA run, and that's about it. He was somewhat amusing in E&C, but Edge got all the good punch-lines.

My thoughts:
-Fantastic tag team wrestler: Great chemistry with a variety of teammates; Edge, Lance Storm, Test, William Regal, Chris Jericho, Tomko, et al.
-Reliable: Almost guaranteed to have a above average match with Christian involved. Also reliable with a mic.
-Versatile: Has shown that he can play a goofy face or heel, and excel at either. Shown that he can be solid-to-great anywhere on the card including the main event.
-High Character: I have never read a bad thing about the guy, unlike his best buddy Edge
-Helped innovate the TLC match, and the E&C/Hardy's/Dudley's feud is one of the best feuds of the last 20 years
-One of the very few wrestlers to benefit from a TNA run.
-Reputation has been somewhat undermined by blue dots, goofy graphics, poor show production, supposed VKM prejudices, and unfair comparisons to Edge.

It's far too late now but there were periods in the past they missed the boat on pushing him

Should have been bigger than he was allowed to be.
In a sense he's to blame. He had a mid-card look about him and never did anything to change it.
Perception matters.

Loved E&C, his singles run has been middling at best bar a few really nice moments. He's very yellow.

Christian in TNA is what made him one of my favorites. Also it's... it's Christian!

I agree that he should hang it up, I think he could retire and have his career looked back upon fondly even though he didn't get everything he could have. He's been injured so long (and he now has a daughter), I'm not sure there's much else he has left to do. And I was at a house show and he saw me wearing his shirt in the crowd, he brought me in the ring and let me hold his ECW title while he took a picture of me, then he messaged me on Twitter later when I thanked him for it.

I think Jericho was the one who screwed Christian out of a one on one title match with Cena when he was hot. In Jericho's second book, he talks about how at Summerslam he was originally booked to face Carlito but he lobbyed to have a title match with Cena be his last match with the company. I think they were going to go with a Cena-Christian program before Jericho decided he wanted that match so he kind of screwed Christian a little bit if that was the case.

He technically got 2 matches, which was bullshit since he basically was given a handicap in the first match, so why should I believe he could win the second?

He is the Tully Blanchard of his generation. Will always put on a solid match, good on the mic, generates a crowd response regardless of position on the card. He will never be more than a top-of-the-midcard guy and I'm ok with that, because the business needs those guys too.

He's a decent enough worker, but I've never been able to see him as anything more than a midcarder.

That's awesome. I'm glad to hear that he would do that for you. As for him on the whole, I completely agree with mizerable's first post. He's one of the most talented guys of the last 20 years, and never got the chance he deserved in the WWE. He got more over by himself in 2005 than Edge did, and he was a hell of a lot better ring performer than Edge as well. He was terrific in 2005 despite only being able to do promos and never getting much of a chance to show what he could do in the ring with some of the upper guys (although he had an underrated main event against Batista in London on Raw). He was better in TNA, when they let him be the star (for a little while at least) that he deserved to be. He was amazing as the ECW champ, wrestling guys like Zack Ryder and Yoshi Tatsu every week for the title, making them look way better than they had before and have since. He was great in 2011 before Orton killed him, but match wise, there's a reason his feud with Orton produced the best matches of Orton's career (in terms of repeat feuds that he's had). Even his IC reign started off well in 2012, with his awesome match against McIntyre on Superstars, before they shot it in the foot. He's been a bit injury prone recently, but he's still a terrific talent when called upon. It's a damn shame they never let him do more promos as a face on the main shows, because he has always been a damn good promo guy regardless of whether he was face or heel. The apathy towards him makes me sad, because he deserves so much more. To close, great guy/great wrestler/great talker/better than Edge.
