What wrestlers had a surprising comeback along the lines of Goldust and did some of the best work of their career? I think Finlay would have to be one, before that most fans if they knew him before only knew of him as a WCW midcarder but he did some great stuff on Smackdown when he came out of retirement.

I don't think any of us in our wildest dreams expected Tatanka to have another run in the mid-2000s.

You can also throw Road Warrior Animal and Tatanka in there but they really didn't do much. It's more surprising that WWE hired them back period.

Backlund in the 90s. Just out of nowhere return after having dropped off the face of the earth half a decade-plus before it.
HBK. I thought he was 100% done after WM14, but he ended up having some of his best matches afterward.
Hogan. I never thought Hogan would be re-embraced the way he was at and after WM18.

Not as surprising as some already mentioned, but King Kong Bundy in the 1990s.

The Rock at Survivor Series 2011... Granted it was a tag team match, he impressed the hell out of a lot of people pulling out some of the moves he did and looking in the shape he did at the time. Especially since it was 7-8 years since his last wrestling match.

That one time Jim Duggan entered the Rumble as a surprise entrant.

That one time Jim Duggan entered the Rumble as a surprise entrant. Considering he'd been part of the active roster a year or two beforehand, not so much. The fact that he'd been part of the active roster a year or two beforehand is the real surprise.

Like others have said, HBK in 2002, and The Rock in 2011.
But another one would be Curt Hennig in 2002.

Gotta go with RVD considering how much he was lacking in TNA.

Mr. Perfect, too bad it didn't last beyond the Royal Rumble, it seems.

Backlund in the 90s. Just out of nowhere return after having dropped off the face of the earth half a decade-plus before it. Ya, that one was crazy, not only was it close to 10 years since Backland had been in the WWF, but those were a very eventful 10 years that made it seem like a lot longer. He was from a different era. Then in his debut vignette, he says he's going after the WWF championship.

Mr. Perfect, too bad it didn't last beyond the Royal Rumble, it seems. I only remember seeing him on Smackdown sometime after that. He was then gone.

Then in his debut vignette, he says he's going after the WWF championship. This is so true. Ten years ago it was 2004. It doesn't seem that long ago. Wrestling hasn't gone through much of a transformation other than the lack of blood and crazy hardcore matches. Hell, some of the top tier guys like Cena and Orton were already on the verge of the main event scene. When Backlund came back, it was like someone from the 1950s showing up and feuding with Bret Hart. Then he WON the damn title which was even more mindblowing to me. Of course it was only like a week before Nash became champ which led to the most prosperous era in the WWF according to Nash's hand written pie charts and graphs. FUN FACT: When Batista returns later this month, he will be the same age as Bob Backlund when he won the WWF Title in 1994
