What were some of the random matches put together between two guys who looked like total opposites work wise who ended up putting together a good/great match? The first ones that came to my mind both oddly involve Lex Luger. First, his US title matches with Michael Hayes (himself not the best wrestler in the world) were really damn good. Then Lex took on a pudgy Tommy Rich for the US title at I think one of the Clashes and they put together one hell of a match that made the fans give a shit about Tommy Rich again, if only for a short while.

Although both were great workers, Alex Wright and Ultimo Dragon certainly had different styles, but meshed really well and had a great match when Wright beat Ultimo for the TV title.

I always felt that Umaga and Jeff Hardy had outstanding chemistry, and I figured it would be a trainwreck. Undertaker and Batista are in a similar category for me, too.

Neither guy was really a master technician like Bret Hart, but the feud between Cactus Jack and Shoji Nakamaki in IWA Japan produced quite a few good Deathmatches.

Before I read even further, Brian Pillman vs. Lex Luger during the 1989 Halloween Havoc is one of my top 5 matches of all time. I have NEVER understood the "Lex Luger is a bad wrestler" thing that took over the internet. I absolutely loved his heel work in 87 and 89.

I always felt he could have average matches with bad workers and great matches with good ones. If you put him in the ring with a great worker, he could up usually up his own game enough to hang with them.

AJ Styles & Abyss. Would never have picked those two as great opponents, but I can't remember a single bad match they had. Barring that match at Destination X in 2010 where the ending was at fault more than anything else. Ric Flair fell in a hole!

Neither guy was really a master technician like Bret Hart, but the feud between Cactus Jack and Shoji Nakamaki in IWA Japan produced quite a few good Deathmatches. Foley was a lot more proficient than many might think, but he also came to realize pretty early that brawling helped him stand out a lot more. He put it something like "I know a lot of holds, but I found that the more punches I threw and the less holds, the fewer peanut butter sandwiches I had to eat", paraphrasing, but yeah, a guy like him was better off doing forearm strikes than leglocks. For me, one that would be under a lot of radars would be Super Crazy and Chris Masters. Their feud was not very long, but they had some really damn good matches for what they were, and seemed to bring out the best in one another.

I always found the Rude/Warrior series of matches surprisingly good when I watched them back. I knew Rude could work really well, but I did not expect him to be able to carry Warrior to multiple enjoyable matches.

It's not limited to wrestling.

Bryan Danielson and Necro Butcher. I loved the one match they had in PWG. Bryan wins due to ref stoppage for excessive violence. Who would have thought?
