So, due to Playstation Plus offering it for free this month, I finally got around to DmC, and I honestly thought it was a great game.
The gameplay was a whole lot of fun, and definitely true to the Devil May Cry legacy. The story was honestly pretty good. The soundtrack was awesome, the graphics were great...I don't honestly have a lot to say about it other than it was a little glitchy here and there.
And I'll be honest, I like Dante's redesign.
So aside from said redesign...why does everyone hate this game?

It is DMC Lite. The game was too easy for a DMC game, imo, and it tries too hard to be cool instead of letting it come naturally.
DmC isn't a bad game, it is just a poor DMC game(but still better than DMC2).

Eh, I don't really think it tried too hard, but that's a subjective thing. The over the top nature of it all is more or less what I was expecting, and I loved it.
And I will agree, it's easier than previous entries in the series, but as someone who is, well, generally not very good at these sorts of games, it was something I actually welcomed with open arms.

DMC2 was such a massive disappointment. I mean, it introduced some really cool mechanics like dual targeting with the pistols...but it was aggressively boring in both gameplay and story/characters. I don't know whose bright idea it was to make Dante a SERIOUS PROTAGONIST, but it was a horrendous idea.

Too easy. The main thing I loved about DMC3 was how challenging it was. Beating a boss or getting a SSS rank combo was actually satisfying. New Dante isn't as fun as old Dante, either.
I still thought it was decent, though.

Combat is too simple, and the story tries to take itself more seriously than the neverending guitar riffs that the other games are. It's a decent game, but it took away what made me a fan of the series in the first place. There's no 1)Over the top silliness and 2)Ridiculously hard but well designed gameplay.
It's like, it's a good game. It works, it's functional and all that. But it took the two things that made me like the series to start with, so as a fan of the series(...save for 2) I'm just like "...Yeah I don't see a reason to like this game. It just doesn't have what I'm looking for in a game despite the name."
That said, I think the PC version and a few mods go a long way in making the game feel a whole lot better.

I too enjoyed it. But like everyone pointed out when I made a thread about it, it came out about the same time as Metal Gear Rising, which does everything DmC does, but better.
My favourite level in DmC was the club level. That was pretty awesome level design!

I still think it was pretty over the top, or at least, Dante's interactions with various characters were still silly and awesome. And I thought the gameplay was still extremely well-designed, though it was definitely not hard. I made it through with little problem on Normal, but I'm totally comfortable with that. Also, those mods are the best thing ever. I too enjoyed it. My favourite level in DmC was the club level. That was pretty awesome level design! Agreed, the level design in the club was f***ing great. In general, I felt the level design in the game was frankly awesome, and pretty unique in execution. I do still need to play more than just the demo of Revengeance. I had a lot of fun with it.

Also, those mods are the best thing ever. It was pretty over the top, but it didn't feel like the same...kind of over the top, if that makes sense. Like we don't ever see Dante literally rocking out like here (dmc3 spoilers) www.youtube.com/watch?v=oskw8aGIFk0 in DmC. Like we see explosions and monsters dying, but the ridiculous "Dante rides a missile" stuff doesn't happen anymore. The only time the tone is more or less the same is in the opening when he's getting dressed, after that it's like more "action movie over the top" than "Haha this is the silliest goddamn shit but I love it" kind of over the top, if that makes sense. The gameplay was designed well for what it tried to do, but when I say well-designed gameplay I'm referring mostly to difficulty. DMC3 was really hard, but it was designed really well so that you could overcome the difficulty by thinking about the design a little. DmC's difficulty is...well, at least in my case, it felt like you could get max rankings by spamming an attack or two once in a while. I mean if you aren't playing the game for difficulty, then there's nothing wrong with the design, but difficulty is one of the main reasons I(and many others, I think) liked the series. So when the new game comes and gets rid of that, it's kind of "Ehhhh...not my thing" for a lot of people.

I liked it, was a good game and way better than 4. Agreed. 4 wasn't really BAD, but it was very mediocre. They were very much running out of ideas by this point.

It's a pretty good game. What hurt it for me was Capcom's arrogance. The first 4 Devil May Cry's sold between 1.2 to 2 million units each, but for some reason Capcom decided DMC would sell 6 million units because "Call of Duty does".

But Capcom, over the last couple of years, has just been a problem in general.

I didn't like DMC 4. I don't think I've finished it still, got to just before the last boss as, then my progress got reset for some reason and I said f*** it. Couldn't stand hearing Nero scream "KYRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" any more.
But yeah, you should totally play the full game of Revengeance. There's enough silly shit piled in with the serious stuff to entertain you for quite a while.

It's an unnecessary reboot no-one asked for and is blatantly a vanity project for the lead developer who as far as to have Dante redesigned to his image and it basically retconned a beloved series all in the name of his ego. The new Dante tries entirely too hard to be badass when the old one actually WAS badass. In fact, the same thing applies to the water-downed gameplay. It doesn't help that Capcom were utter twats to fans through the entire development, downright insulting people who brought up criticism, especially long-time fans of the series.
So all in all, Capcom destroyed a popular franchise for no reason and replaced it with one guy's shitty self-insert fan fiction and flamed anyone who didn't like it.
And that redesign is shit. Shame on you, Dude!, you have better tastes than that.

Shame on you, Dude!, you have better tastes than that. In a rare turn of events, I actually disagree with pretty much everything you just said. I don't feel the game, or Dante in general, tried too hard. It felt pretty natural in the context of the over-the-top conversations and scenarios in the game. I guess you could argue the gameplay was watered down, as far as difficulty goes, but like I said earlier in the thread, I actually appreciate the lessened difficulty. I always ended up on Easy Automatic mode in the old DMCs, and still ended up doing poorly. I really enjoy these sorts of games, but I'm not necessarily good with them. Also, I'm going to school, so I have less time to sit there and perfect the gameplay to the point where I AM really good at it. As far as my skill goes, I grew up mostly on turn-based RPGs and 2D platformers, and that's where most of my skills in videogames lie. I'm essentially awful at everything else, though I love a lot of different kinds of games. I will agree that Capcom was shitty to its fans during the whole fiasco of the redesign and everything, but I will also say that a lot of fans were SUPER whiny about it, as opposed to making well-reasoned arguments. Though this is the internet, so I expect too much, there. Still, it doesn't excuse Capcom for striking back in the same manner instead of keeping a cool head. The redesign is totally not shit, though. While I think Dante looked his coolest in DMC3, I think this redesign is great.

It feels like the idea was that he wasn't badass in this game yet, but was trying to act like he was. This was an origin setting up a new series. One that is likely dead in the water now.

As a 'long time fan' I felt DMC needed the reboot. The whole world and story of the original series was lacking seeing how Dante got replaced, and what happens when you do play as Dante? You play all the levels again in reverse order. Oh joy, thanks Capcom.
I am also going to agree with what Dude! said as well with one major difference. Since when exactly was Capcom shitting on the fans when the fans themselves were way over their heads, people forgot what the word "reboot" meant, that was why I gave it a chance and I enjoyed every bit of it.
