People here would complain that it doesn't have the features of the previous game and say they're not buying it this year and yadda yadda. The "features over gameplay" mentality has been crippling the series. The series can never really evolve because they apparently can't seem to go one game without bells and whistles(instead of, you know, playing the previous year's game. They're the f***ing same game, anyway.). The sad part is that with all the caw parts, create an arena, match types, create a story, I haven't touched WWE 13 in well over a year because the gameplay f***ing blows. I finished the crappy Attitude Era mode and haven't touched it since. I've actually played WWE All-Stars more despite it not having those "features" because the game itself is actually fun to play. If THQ had made a sequel to that game with all the features of the main games, I'd have been really happy. Instead, I get stuck saddled with mediocrity because everyone else is content with mediocrity as long as they can create stuff... Even sadder is they had this figured out already by from Smackdown 2 to I would say SDVR '06 they had built a game that pretty fairly balances both arcade/simulation style gameplay to a point where all they would have to do is add moves, refine the glitches and who knows how awesome their games would be now.

Agreed! I know people love the CAW modes, but I literally make 1 belt, 1 arena, 1 caw etc for achievements and never touch them, play the game for a while and realise the gameplay hasnt evolved and trade it in 3 months later.
If they spent less time pandering to the Creation suite and career modes and story modes and put it into the core engine, we'd be much better off.
Won't happen though

So Repo Man has just won the United States Title from Vegeta and is now defending it against IRS.
What a time to be alive.

How they want the CAWs to look more like the wrestlers, more match types, less restrictions and such. I don't personally know which sentiment is more strong, but it's interesting to see that both sides strongly believe on both sides. In my opinion, I think most of the people using the game would get bored of it quickly was just focused on gameplay and had only exhibition mode. Even the best fighters today have multiple modes and features.

It's a dinosaur of an engine from the PS1 era that's been frankensteined to hell and back. It's not fun to play and that should be a BIG issue to be dealt with. Way before adding indy moves and making sure everyone's favorite superstars jobber makes the roster. Oh you can make your own promotion? Cool. Its still clunky and slow. Look at all those fanfiction characters you made! Awesome! The gameplay is still uninteresting. Start from scratch. Get a really good foundation and build from there. Right now the game is built on a decades old garbage pile that wasn't even all that good when it started.

Also I seem to remember, the gameplay was criticized for being sped up, especially on strikes.

My underlying hope is that 2k is keeping Yukes on for assistance to maintain the current engine for a few years while they rebuild the core system from scratch in house and will cut ties when they're confident. Thats my hope.

What I'm saying is why should I even be inclined to use CAW if the game itself is trash? And if CAW is the only way to keep the game fresh, then that says something about the game itself.

Well, I mean in the sense of keeping the game up to day roster-wise. I personally find the games fun as hell throughout the year.

But this isn't a monolithic opinion. Yeah, if you're convinced the games are broken, they're not going to be that fun whatever happens, and it's going to take more than a year to make the kind of changes you seem to want. I personally really enjoy the games and don't think they currently 'blow', so my personal preference is to polish and improve the creative features that keep the game from being a shelf filler within a month, like All Stars was.

If you compare it to say FIFA, I have no desire to create my own team/players because the gameplay is good enough to keep it going until the next iteration arrives.
Whilst they are now able to update transfers and stuff throughout the year, if they couldn't I would still regularly play the game because it's fun.
Of course there are different features which some of us prefer but at the core of it surely the gameplay has to be good first and foremost?
Of this series, the games that have held my attention for more than a couple of months are:
Know Your Role Shut Your Mouth Here Comes The Pain SD vs RAW 2006
I still play No Mercy now and again even though it looks like shit.

The ones that didn't hold my attention for more than a couple months are: Just Bring It SmackDown! vs. RAW SVR 2007 SVR 2010 and 2011

All Stars was a way better game than anything Yuke's has ever put out since 2006. Just because it didn't have those create-a-bullshit smoke and mirrors that you people seem to have such a hard on for, doesn't make it a bad game. I'd honestly would be happier with a game that had a good CAW with a create an entrance with plenty, plenty of match types, and a robust engine than these polished turds with nuts that we keep getting year after year. The fact that there's no other significant wrestling companies with a video game and that nobody wants to buy a wrestling game without real wrestlers because they're spoiled mouth-breathers just frustrates me even more.

I loved All-Stars.
I don't care if it's really bare bones on features. It's fun as hell to play. Especially with other people. FUN. Imagine that! Now it would never work as the main-line wrestling game but the engine was cool to mess around with and it looked really good. Hell. Saints Row 3 captured wrestling closer than a lot of the recent games and that was also a THQ joint!
The new UFC game is also very stripped down but the core gameplay is really fluid and entertaining. It gives me hope and excitement for the future of the series. I just want a new wrestling game that is half as fun and engaging.
Speaking of CAW. When's the last time they even updated that stuff? I feel like it's always the same top hats and gorilla suits.

The fact that there's no other significant wrestling companies with a video game and that nobody wants to buy a wrestling game without real wrestlers because they're spoiled mouth-breathers just frustrated me even more. From my perspective, it was ok for a match or two (reversal system was really bloody annoying, mind) but once you'd done the fantasy matchups, it was just 'well, what now?'. 6 tiny cutscenes in the repetitive story mode? Context-free match ups between a really limited roster with nothing whatsoever to build on? If you really find the gameplay that phenomenal, then I guess that could be ok for a little bit, but I didn't find it that stunning, and such an empty experience is not really what I'm into wrestling for. It's not so much 'smoke and mirrors' as an empty room with no decorations whatsoever. Is there a game done since the advent of 3D that's had less content? Even WCW Thunder had the amusing promo videos from each wrestler in the game.

If it counts, they added Superstar Heads in 2K14, allowing us to use certain wrestler heads for CAWs or alternate outfits.
