Bringing back Penn and Teller, who's video was posted earlier, Penn Jillette on his podcast a week or two ago was talking about how he hates when the supposed every side of an issue needs to be heard. It wasn't about vaccinations, but it applies here. When the "other side" of vaccinations are a group of people saying things that have no bearing in science or facts, and are misleading people, we shouldn't be giving them the time of day. Science is science. You can't just make unfounded rebuttals to science like you have a theory on vaccinations. Why not say the brand of baby food gave her child autism? She's got the same amount of evidence to back it up--none.

Anyone that would base their vaccination decision on input from a celeb(and a C-lister has-been one at that) shouldn't be reproducing in the first place.

This isn't an opinion, but whether you choose to believe me or not is up to you! No agenda here, just sharing information.
I personally know of someone very well who was born healthy and was given the Pertussis vaccine in the 70's and developed severe learning disabilities with pronounced autistic traits, which resulted in a very substantial compensation pay out. I'm sure things have improved since then and it certainly was a very rare case, but I can never blame people for exercising caution.
As for Jenny McCarthy, she got me through some tough times in my teenage years - so however horrible she may or not be, good on her for that.

I would need to look this up to be sure but if memory serves the Pertussis vaccine in the 70's was an attenuated version of the toxin, which sometimes was not so attenuated (individual responses varied). The toxin messes with cell signalling, causing an untold number of other problems because messing with G protein signalling, the most common form of cellular response regulation, can have untold consequences. It is not outside of the possibility that some brain damage occurred in some cases. Fortunately, they have a much better vaccine that uses a truncated and functionally inactive form of the toxin. That means that it cannot possibly cause harm and is more likely to prompt antigen response than the attenuated version did.

As for Jenny McCarthy, she got me through some tough times in my teenage years - so however horrible she may or not be, good on her for that. Those cases in relation to Pertussis were later found to be people born with infantile epilepsy. Keep in mind that the 1970's had a lot of anti-vaccination sentiment so people basically would take the 1 out of 300,000 incident and blame it on the vaccine. The vaccine actually was showing that these people had epilepsy at an early stage. That's a good thing because it wasn't CAUSING the epilepsy, but showing that a person had it. They didn't connect the dots until the early 1990's though. This is important because of the following: "A link between epilepsy and autism has been discovered for the first time. Breakthrough research from the University of Bath found adults with epilepsy have higher traits of autism and Asperger syndrome. It found epileptic seizures disrupt the neurological function that affects social functioning in brains, resulting in the same traits seen in autism. " www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2325088/Scientists-discover-link-epilepsy-autism-time.html#ixzz2yJ0QQvet So basically your friend got a substantial pay out for genetics, but I don't fault them for it.

Except "exercising caution" is just one of those keywords the deniers use without actually applying it's true meaning. To be truly cautious would be to vaccinate, because even IF (which admittedly I don't believe) a vaccine caused autism it is even by the most ridiculous nut cases numbers rare and not fatal where as what vaccines prevent are (or were back when vaccines weren't turned down for stupid reasons) far more common, easy to catch and far more fatal. I don't blame people for researching and shopping around for different vaccine types and methods but basing decisions on anecdotes and corrupted studies isn't the same thing. All those anecdotes of parents with autistic children are scary but correlation is not causation. I heard once that as the number of pirates sailing the high seas went down the global temperature went up, therefore pirates are directly related to global warming, right?

Vaccine injuries do occur, but they are extremely rare and usually happen in kids who have genetic defects in the first place.

I feel sorry for her son.
This is from her Wiki article...
"McCarthy tried a gluten-free and casein-free diet, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, chelation, aromatherapies, electromagnetics, spoons rubbed on his body, multivitamin therapy, B-12 shots and numerous prescription drugs. "Try everything," she advises parents, "It was amazing to watch, over the course of doing this, how certain therapies work for certain kids and they completely don't work for others ... When something didn't work for Evan, I didn't stop. I stopped that treatment, but I didn't stop."] McCarthy has stated on talk shows and at rallies that chelation therapy helped her son recover from autism. The underlying rationale for chelation, the speculation that mercury in vaccines causes autism, has been roundly rejected by scientific studies, with the National Institute of Mental Health concluding that children with autism are unlikely to receive any benefit to balance the risks of heart attack, stroke and cardiac arrest posed by the chelating agents used in the treatment"
Instead of simply accepting that her son has autism and can still live a perfectly happy life, she's been using him as a laboratory for all manner of crazy treatments.

The same goes for other parents that I've encountered when I was active in the autism community. One of them was the biggest jackass I've ever encountered (I to this day have a screenshot of stuff he said to me).

I think being spooned by Jenny McCarthy would be highly therapeutic While I would be happy to be spooned by her that is a terrible thing for a kid with autism (my daughter is on the spectrum). Granted, the thing in the article says rubbing spoons on the kid, which would be about as bad. Kids with autism are very sensitive to touch and have extreme personal space concerns. My daughter would have flipped her lid if we rubbed spoons on her.

Reminds of parents who spend time and energy trying to "fix" hearing loss in kids with cochlear implants, speech therapy and oral education. It's really quite an unhealthy approach to the situation. Your kid is NOT broken. They are fine the way they are. Stop trying to "fix" them!

Your kid is NOT broken. They are fine the way they are. Stop trying to "fix" them! That is a whole different ballgame - being born deaf, a kid can grow up without any issues save for the fact some parts of society aren't quite helpful, which is really less on them and more on society. Now if a kid goes deaf when they are say, 11 or 12, having to adapt to that condition is like moving to a foreign country. It's a whole new culture they have to adapt to, and that can be a really painful process. I wouldn't blame a parent for considering a cochlear implant then - it's something the kid was used to and that he or she suddenly lost the ability to. It's not a black and white thing, though I do know what you are saying, yeah. Especially with how invasive the surgery is, depending on how small the kid is...I can see the reason for cochlear implants in some cases, but in a lot of them it also feels like "Man that's...dude, really?"
