Before the end of the match did they ever announce it was non-title? That's WCW'S equivalent of ending WrestleMania with the WWE champion losing but in a shocking twist it was a non-title match. What da hell?

I don't recall them ever announcing it. It's pretty bait and switch.

That's one of the things which gets me. Piper demanded the match and the stipulations. Then again, Hogan knew as well. If I was champ and knew my title wasn't up for grabs, I wouldn't risk my health or exhaust myself. Take the loss and regroup.
I felt the same with Piper's collar match with Valentine. Greg was the US champion and lost the match. Wasn't until later I realized the NWA wouldn't sanction the match so no belt change.
Ah, Roddy. Get an attorney to look at these contracts.

No idea why this doesn't get mentioned as often as other stupid WCW moments.

No idea why this doesn't get mentioned as often as other stupid WCW moments. You know what's worse than that? Having a Piper and Hogan main eventing your biggest PPV in mid 90s.

No idea why this doesn't get mentioned as often as other stupid WCW moments. Because WCW business was skyrocketing at the point, so they could get away with this bullshit stupid angle at the time, same reason as WWF being the drizzling shits for most of 1999 is largely overlooked.

I agree. Think about it, Piper can best Hogan. Who the f*** needs Sting? As much as people praise Bischoff for his build to the Sting/Hogan match, this just seems a black spot that's over looked. Why not just have Hulk win?

A few weeks later, they pulled another fast one with the Giant/Hogan match airing during commercial breaks of Mortal Kombat.

A few weeks later, they pulled another fast one with the Giant/Hogan match airing during commercial breaks of Mortal Kombat. That I don't really mind. It was a match announced that night and was a clever cross-promotion ploy. Same with sting signing the Starrcade contract. But the Starrcade 96 main event was a total bait and switch, especially since it was billed as a world title match up until a week before the show when it was just billed as a "Grudge match" with nobody noticing until retrospect. Nobody ever acknowledged that it wasn't going to be for the title. Truth be told, the build for the match was great and it's among Hogan and Pipers best mid-to-late 90s outings. It's pretty good, and really better than it had any right to be, especially considering how disappointing their '97 showdowns were. I think it just gets overlooked because Starrcade '97 was a colossal mistake on every conceivable level.

Why not just have Hulk win? Hell, Luger beat Hogan for the title in the middle of the run up which in hindsight doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense either...

Just watched Halloween Havoc 97. I always thought Hogan won the rematch. WTF Piper won that one too and it was also non-title? Why was Piper never allowed a title match?
