Bret vs Vince in 2010. The idea of it was gold but got substantially worse with each passing week, ending with one of the worst Wrestlemana matches of all time. Usually when you involve a car, you're overthinking.

I know people mentioned Summer of Punk, Chris Jericho's return, Nexus, etc.
But I am going to have to say John Cena being forced to be a member of Nexus. In this particular instance, in my opinion, the WWE had a grand opportunity to do something completely different with Cena's character. From a booking standpoint there was a chance to show him being vunerable, plant seeds for a heel turn, and make Nexus a bigger threat by actually corrupting the character of John Cena.
I remember reading a lot of booking theories on how they should've forced Cena to take part in beating down the faces, cheating to achieve victories, and actually laying down to take a pinfall for fear of losing his job. But instead we saw Cena have every single member afraid of him.
