Everyone, at least on tv and tv related message boards, likes to make fun of them. But they're the highest rated network and have the most popular shows. They must be doing something right, so why does everyone like to point them out as either "the old man network" or their shows as "the worst thing on television"? Hey, if Glee and Family guy aren't on there, they aren't the worst thing on television
Speaking of "old people stigma", what's up with the jokes for The Mentalist? It's pretty good. It's basically a calmer, less wacky version of Monk (even though everyone like to compare it to Psych).

A lot of people hate Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory. I get the Two and a Half Men hate, but Big Bang Theory is decent. I don't go out of my way to watch it or anything but if it's on and I'm not doing anything its good for a few laughs.

A lot of people find Big Bang Theory annoying because a lot of the humor is like "Ha, I just made a joke poking fun at nerds, high-five!" Which like you said, is good for a few laughs, but it gets old really fast. That, and many people find Sheldon to be insufferable. I'm more surprised that people don't dump on Fox a lot. Nickelodeon gets laughed at because it's still coasting on SpongeBob, but is Fox really any different with the way it's dominated by The Simpsons and Family Guy?

Being on top is part of it, it means they are the easiest target. Beyond that, Two and a Half Men had a lot of detractors even before Sheen left, and when he did, the show was seen as a zombie, existing past its natural lifespan.
Big Bang Theory sometimes seems unsure of who it is trying to cater to. Sometimes they seem to try to throw a bone to the nerds they spend much of the time mocking, and then they go right back to "HAHA, get it? They're socially sub-human!" It's a show with a lot of identity problems.
Lastly, the ending of How I Met Your Mother burned a lot of the fanbase badly. I won't bother spoiling it, as you likely have had it spoiled already, but it struck many as a huge copout, along with a bizarre move to the climax of a comedy, sticking the show right back where many fans thought it had moved on from, but in truth, I guess it never did.
Besides, NBC catches a ton of mocking, themselves, for their decline.

^Oh yeah the How I Met Your Mother ending was AWFUL. It used to be my favorite show on there but the ending really soured my enjoyment even of past episodes. I watched a few reruns that were on the other day and just found myself feeling bitter because I knew how it ended.

I think it's actually from their reputation many years ago where they didn't really have a lot of shows to appeal to younger viewers. Shows like J.A.G., Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, etc. were on their network. It still carries somewhat, but CBS owes a lot to Ray Romano and Chuck Lorre (2 and a 1/2 Men, Big Bang Theory) for changing that reputation.

their comedies aren't funny and made worse by an over use of laugh tracks, and their dramas are way over the top to the point of being ridiculous

Their brand of "comedy" includes How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, Mom, The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, and Two and a Half Men. Their brand of drama includes two separate NCIS, Person of Interest, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Good Wife and The Mentalist. In my opinion, there isn't a single watchable show on that network.

I don't really know what shows are on what networks/channels in the States since I don't live over there but since I watch a lot of American television I recognised a few shows mentioned in this thread. And it makes me think that CBS must be a pretty decent channel.
I love The Mentalist, I don't see it as something everyone should watch so I don't rave about it to all my friends (like I did about The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Shield, Game of Thrones etc.) but I still watch it every week and very much enjoy it.
Two and a Half Men was amazing for its first six seasons in my opinion and although the show started to go downhill from there (and fell off a cliff to a slow death on life support once Sheen left) I'll always remember it fondly.
How I Met Your Mother is one of my all-time favourite shows. It transcended the comedy genre and found a niche as something completely different to most comedies. And I loved the finale so my view of the show has not been tainted by it. It may have actually enhanced how I feel about the show because I do believe the show, while constantly entertaining, made certain mistakes - a lot of which were (in my opinion) rectified in the finale.
And yeah The Big Bang Theory flat out sucks. I have no defence for CBS here. Aside from Two Broke Girls and New Girl it's probably the worst "comedy" I've ever seen.
EDIT:
And now I see Two Broke Girls is a CBS "comedy" too, starting to understand the mockery a little more.

I think it's because of all the dramas. Personally, I like NCIS (original, please). Other than that? Well the channel has gotten less attention from me. Mostly like it for not only NCIS, but just really the morning schedule. Its sitcoms are overrated, not interesting to me, or used to be good until they made changes.
Outside of its network, CBS also has its DVD division as another strike, especially when it comes to its Paramount holdings. There is a reason why I think the initials stand for "Constantly Butchering Shows."

I get it, but I don't understand harping on it so much.
CBS hasn't made a show I've liked since the 80's and how popular their current shows are is a bit of a head scratcher as I don't see the appeal of them. They just seem so...well, tastes vary obviously, but they're just so generic and broad that I don't get it.
But like I said, I wouldn't actively go on and on about. If someone brought it up, I'd talk about it, but I wouldn't waste a good hate rant on it.

They're stifling entertainment with antiquated viewing habits. It's time to follow the light, Carol Anne. Nothing more to see here.

You said it... "it's the highest rated network and has the most popular shows" therefore... it's most vocally hated.
Same when NBC was on their hot-streak with Mad About You, Seinfeld, Friends, Will & Grace, Scrubs, The Office, etc,.... people just loved to voice their hatred of whatever their flagship show was at the time.
Most popular usually equals most hated, not sure how the math works out... but in almost every genre of entertainment it applies.
