With Bo Rai Cho, this game has a natural way to make him more appealing to players. Have one of his styles be the traditional pukey joke, another be the drunken stance and style but without the toilet humour, and one could incorporate some Liu Kang esque moves to give the link of being his trainer. I'd be fine with that. I don't think that would bother hardly anyone, so why not.

Not really. MK can be corny, sure, but it still aims to be dark and when it goes for humour, it usually still fits and it's more dark humour than anything else. Bo Rai Cho is "FART PUKE LOL". He's the kind of character an 8-year-old would come up with, and his classmates would think his idea is stupid. And are seriously supposed to buy that THIS guy trained Liu "Boy Scout" Kang? This is true, but this is their chance to reinvent him to MAKE IT WORK. They really need to give him more of a Yoda vibe. Someone watching Empire Strikes Back for the first time would go "Wait, THIS is the Jedi Master?" then they actually show him as the wise old master he's supposed to be. Bo Rai Cho...never really got that. I mean, I like him, but his moveset was always too jokey. I'm not saying a complete revamp is necessary, but they definitely need to fix him up a little bit. I agree. All they need to do is tweak the concept, because every fighting game franchise needs a fat weird guy.

With Kano revealed, I'm starting to wonder who the heroes are gonna be, seeing as how I could see them also bringing back the cyborgs, Mileena, Reptile, Quan Chi, Baraka and possibly Sheeva.

That's why I thought it worked, honestly. It's just taking the piss out of the extreme seriousness of a lot of the game, the old "wise Chinese master" stereotype, and the hand or foot-generated special powers of the other fighters. To each their own, I guess. To me he came across as a one-note bad joke. He's supposed to be one of those "he's gross but deep down he's wise and good"... except there was nothing deep down. He also served no purpose story-wise so there was no point to the character. Say what you will about Meat and Mokap (and I actually like those) but at least they have the decency to be non-canon. And frankly I don't see how the MK games have been "extremely" serious. The storyline of the recent games has been dead serious despite the bits of humor they add in. I like the silliness. Not every character needs to be serious. Like for example, I really enjoy the character of Rain. Why? He exists solely to be a Prince joke. The idea of such a purple rock music ninja existing in a martial arts universe is patently absurd, and that's exactly why I love it. Bo Rai Cho is kind of lame with the toilet humor, but I appreciate the effort of subverting the characters with something goofy.

I'm not saying all characters need to be serious, but Bo Rai Cho isn't serious OR funny. He's nothing. He's a fatter, more obnoxious version of Shujinko. And I guess we'll have to agree to disagree because I don't like Rain either. Like Bo Rai Cho, he doesn't have a personality, he only exists for the sake of one joke. If he actually had a style and a story that genuinely made him funny then fine. See, you talk about him being a rock music ninj and if that actually were his gimmick that would have been fantastic! But as it stands it's just "He's purple! He's called Rain! That's the joke! Look! His fatality turns the enemy into a slinky or something! Pretty funny, huh?". It doesn't help that considering that Trilogy was already filled to the brim with silly stuff he really didn't stand out and just made me go "Really? ANOTHER ninja palette swap?". I just... if you have a joke character, at least make sure they're actually funny.

They mentioned that "returning" characters would likely be DLC at some point so they wouldn't be involved with the story. From the hints they've been dropping, MOST of the characters are going to be new (at least in relations to the MK9 canon, not the MK4 and on canon).

I wouldn't be surprised if Kenshi became one of the top dogs. People love him and he was already DLC for MK9.

I just... if you have a joke character, at least make sure they're actually funny. I think Bo Rai Cho has quite an interesting role he could play. You've got a backstory that works well with the regular setup, an Outworld native in exile who can't participate in the tournament as it'd count against Earth, but uses his talents to train those who can. Already enough for a character there. Then you've got the drunken side, which can honestly work well. Look at Brad Wong in Dead Or Alive, his moveset's one of the most interesting in the game. I'd argue that Bo Rai Cho's moveset took it a bit too far with the toilet humour, but there's still potential there. But he's got a unique character and a name that can truly be said to be a Shakespearian style pun (Borachio in Much Ado About Nothing has the same root). As far as Rain goes, he's also got a decent backstory tying in with the Edenia stuff, and a pretty awesome look and moveset in the post UMK3 days. The fact that he's a prince in purple with the name Rain is a fun reference for the audience who'll get it, but for everyone else... Meh, doesn't hurt? Ermac isn't necessarily based around Error Macros any more, but he's still a neat character.

Another thing that I like about the Kano trailer is that he's finally given a chance to use that eye-laser of his in combat. Reminds me of Devil Jin from the Tekken series. No idea why they showed him using it only in the cutscenes in MK9, though.

He's the only thing after Mortal Kombat 4 (arguably 3, because the only other one IMO is Quan Chi) that feels like a f***ing Mortal Kombat character. All those other forgettable hacks are...well, forgettable hacks! Or ridiculous enough that they stand out in your mind, like Bo Rai Cho. (Which I should again clarify: I like Bo Rai Cho, in spite of the glaring problems he has.)

Always hate facing him with my Johnny Cage since Cage sucks against a character as good at zoning as Kenshi.

Frost was "We liked Sub-Zero's other moveset from MK3 but we can't put two of Sub-Zero in Deadly Alliance because story or whatever." on top of one of the most cliche-filled instances of the "Now I am the master!" cliche stories. Completely pointless. Li Mei...I honestly don't remember if that crap with her turning evil was canon or not, but if it was...yeah, you're right. Otherwise, prove me wrong. Havik.........oh, Havik. I want to like Havik. I really do. But his entire character is wrapped around all that Orderrealm/Chaosrealm garbage. Hotaru and the rest of those yokels are worthless, pointless, characterless characters. He could be saved with some massive retcons while keeping the basic concept.

I just... if you have a joke character, at least make sure they're actually funny. I guess that depends on our definitions of funny. Me, I like the lameness of Rain. Although, yes, the idea of a purple ninja prince who plays guitar and struts around like a pigeon would be completely hilarious. For character personalities, I couldn't tell you most of them. Some of them are easy, whereas traditionally Jax was "The BrotherMan," Baraka was "Angry dude with Spiky Arms," Kobra was "Ken from Street Fighter," Shinnok was "Evil Demon Man," Nitara was "Scantily-clad vampire with nice hair," Movado was "Hong Kong Matrixman," Liu Kang was "Chinese martial artist," and so on. Of course there's some better ones like Kenshi, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Mileena or Drahmin, but they feel like a minority in a sea of blandness. That's a byproduct of having a giant roster. Bo Rai Cho at least has some quirks (he's a martial arts master when he's serious...but he's also a soft drunk who indulges in food and drink above all other vices) going on, to the credit of whoever wrote him.
