I've seen a lot of negativity towards this one and I just don't understand why. It's nowhere near the first one, but I'd put it about equal to DH With a Vengeance.

I like it plenty, but it's remarkably similar to the original with a less compelling villain in a way.

It feels too similar to the first one, too coincidental. Mind you, I'm saying this as someone who likes it. But I could see why people may roll their eyes at the premise.
Maybe everyone hates naked William Sadler? I sure don't!

Homer didn't write a letter to it, so I guess that's why.

The dude from Good Times getting sucked into a jet engine just puts a damper on the whole thing.

Do people dislike it? I never knew. I mean it isn't Die Hard, but you assume that going in. I'd watch it 100 times over 4 and 5 (and I don't think 4 is the worst thing ever either).

It, to me, just feels a little bit like if they made a sequel to Ferris Bueller's Day Off called "Ferris Bueller skips school again the next month". A lot of it feels rehashed. It's around Christmas, his wife is captured, Dickless from Ghostbusters is hanging around, and John needs to save the day again and what seems to be the original bad guy plan is not actually the plan. It makes it hard not to compare it to the first one, and the first one is really damn good, one of the best action movies ever made. It would make anything look a little lacking in comparison. I think another reason a lot of people don't like it is if they saw it on TV. It has one of the shittiest TV edits of any major motion picture ever made, even if it is also hilarious. If you told me to cast someone who sounded less like Bruce Willis, I'd have difficulty finding one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuQP4d_r_Gs

I found it pretty boring with a lot of dumb twists just for the sake of twists. But that's not why I hate it. I hate the ending when the plane explodes and because of the fire, the plane can land. Then the other pilots go if they can do it, we can do it. It doesn't make sense why that makes me so mad, but it does.

A major airline disaster happens at that airport..
That is barely mentioned for the rest of the film .
Holly: hey John, is there BBQ going on around here? McClane: Nah honey, that's just the burning wreck of a loaded passenger Boeing 777 smouldering on the other runway.

I believe 2 had nothing that stood out.
Re-doing the first one's plot isn't a problem on its own, but if you're going to do it you have to have scenes and characters as memorable as the first.

I like it, but maybe it goes too over the top?
Like the first one wasn't realistic, but once you have McClane survive the ejector seat explosion thing, maybe that's where a lot of people said "nah, I'm out."

I never heard people really disliked it but its sandwiched between two better Die Hards Basically this. It's a B+ movie that follows an A+ movie and is followed by another A+ movie. It's still good, but it's still the weakest of the three. Fortunately 4 and 5 came along to make it look a whole lot better.

Fortunately 4 and 5 came along to make it look a whole lot better. Well, I agree with you on the fifth film, but the fourth film, not so much. Here is my personal opinion about "Die Hard 2." I like the movie, it's actually enjoyable and there are good action sequences, but it felt like a rehash of the original with similar elements: The Christmas-time setting, John getting himself into a bad situation, Holly being caught in a bad situation (Though I liked the situation she was in in the first film more because it made us root for John to go after Hans in the end), and the whole thing about John being the one to stop it despite having to deal with local cops, though Dennis Franz's character started to side with McClane a little more in the end. I still like the movie, but I liked the first and third a lot more. As for the fourth movie, I know some people crap on that one, but I think it was actually a lot better than what they say about it. Some people say that it's too over the top and stuff, as if the other three weren't. How is swinging on a fire-hose off a roof that explodes not over the top? How is ejecting from a plane cockpit with grenades that take a little long to detonate not over the top? How in the hell is the guy you're teaming with being at the same site with you hurling right out of a sewer full of water not over the top? Not to mention the hurling out of the sewer because one would just drown from that. Regarding the fifth, I remember liking it the night I saw it, but then I thought back on it and realized it was bad. I don't even want to add it to my Die Hard collection.
