I'm enjoying Capaldi as the Doctor, but I feel like the writing's a little weak so far. This was the best episode of this run so far though.
Personally, I'd have loved it if the Doctor just called Clara a "Stupid ape" (like 9 used to call humans at times) though.

So... am I the only one who felt the conflict here was completely artificial? Oh no! We're going to kill a baby thing we don't know what it is! Cry me a f'n river, we're trying to save 7 billion people here. Look, I'm a strong believer in animal rights and all that but how is choosing between saving all of Earth and NOT saving all of Earth even up for debate?
And of course at the end it's all pointless anyway because a Deux Ex Machina solves everything, because we can't have actual consequences now, can we?
And of course, the idea of the Moon being an egg has got to be one of the stupidest New Who concepts since the Statue of Liberty being a Weeping Angel.
Clara calling out the Doctor was pretty cool but it was pretty much the worst episode they could have chosen to place it because it's the one time he really wasn't being a dick.

The speech at the end... I dunno, I just didn't like it. The Doctor said you're human, you decide your fate, you get upset and literally tell him not to take the stabilisers off. So you want him to lead you, keep you safe, not have agency in your own future and rely on him if things get actually difficult.
I can't see any companion saying that. Well, maybe Adric, but that's about it.

Well, I think she meant to say that he doesn't get to choose when Humanity should have free will and when it shouldn't, and that he has no right to act like he knows what's best for Earth and like its inhabitants are children. Unfortunately, yeah, I don't feel that's what he was doing this time around (if anything, it was the first time he WASN'T doing that) so like I said, I like the speech but they chose a terrible context to place it in.

The Moon is an Egg? That's silly, next you are going to tell me the Earth has a spider egg in the center and the Dinosaurs were killed by a crashing space ship.

Also that he didn't really give her any choice in the matter, he was off in the TARDIS leaving her to potentially/probably die. What would he have done if the bombs had gone off? He arrived after the choice had been made. So from her perspective, it's not even being given this decision and being free to pick whatever you think is best, it's seemingly 'do what I think is the right thing since I've trained you to think like me, but I don't want to take any responsibility for it'. I think we'd all feel put out to say the least, and this is also after a whole series worth of patronising and insulting remarks about her. It's not like he's been lovely and chummy then sprung this on her. It's not even the first time this series he's seemingly abandoned her like that, and she made her displeasure clear that time, too. I like how it's been handled here, and I also think it's a great thing that Clara's finally challenged him.

I'm in a bitching mood this morning because my coffee machine just died, so I'm gonna bitch some more:
About the whole abortion metaphor thing (you know, the moral dilemma the entire episode hinged on), it really doesn't work. For one thing, it's not our (that is, humanity's) baby, secondly, it has already killed thousands of people and logic tells everyone except appearantly the writer that it's going to kill all of us just by hatching, so at the very worst we are killing it in self-defense and thirdly, A SINGLE LIFE AGAINST AN ENTIRE SAPIENT SPECIES IS NOT A MORAL DILEMMA. THE NEEDS OF THE MANY OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE FEW. The millions and billions of children that were going to die on Earth because of the alien were just as innocent as this creature and have no less right to live just because this thing is "unique".
This episode is like telling a woman who wants to have an abortion because her doctor just told her the complications at birth are likely going to kill her and then he says "No, I'm not gonna let you do it, because a baby is good for you and will get you to turn your life around." and completely missing the obvious risk.

I like how it's been handled here, and I also think it's a great thing that Clara's finally challenged him. That's a good point but honestly, I'm not sure how much of that is intentional and how much of it is due to clumsy writing. Don't get me wrong, I too like the fact that she called him out (and the actress was bloody brilliant in the scene) but... it just feels to me it would have been more fitting anywhere else. Hell, it would probably have been more meaningful had she done that the moment he was leaving. Then again, maybe I was just still grumpy that the entire "dilemma" in the episode was a complete non-issue that was rendered pointless by a deus ex machina anyway.

Add me into the "didn't like it". Maybe it's the abortion metaphor, maybe it's the fact that I don't find Courtney to be that interesting, maybe it has to do with the Doctor getting snapped at by Clara (though yeah, the more I think of it, the more he was in the right here), but I just never got entertained by this one.
