Part of me wants the A's to miss the playoffs but I think they're so far ahead of the other wild card teams (just checked, 2 games in front Seattle and 3 games in front of Detroit) that they are most likely going to play in the 1 game playoff.
Other thoughts: How about Nelson Cruz driving in 7 runs against Tampa?
Key 'hunt for October' series this week: Royals @ Detroit for 3 Braves @ Nats for 3 - this could very well decide the division. Thinking if the Nats win 2 out of 3, 9 game lead is too much for Atlanta to overcome

Doug Fister allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings to beat the Braves on Monday.

Billy Ripken on MLB Network thinks that there's going to be a 1 game playoff to enter the 1 game playoff game. I think he said Detroit vs. Seattle in a 1 game playoff, winner meets Oakland.

Billy Beane:MLB::Daryl Morey:NBA
They both get labeled as these brilliant analytic geniuses who are seemingly on a higher plane than everyone else in their respective sport, they've made colossal acquisitions that everyone thought would put their team over the top as proverbial championship favorites, yet at the end of the day, neither has ever won diddly squat.

Yeah because the MLB playoffs aren't a random crap shoot of luck where the freaking Cardinals always end up with that luck.

The thing with the play-offs, me thinks, is that it's all about having 3-5 players that are absolutely HOT at that moment and run with them. The thing with Oakland is that they are always about the averages, thus most of their players don't really get "hot" as much as they're "good" all season, but can't kick up that extra gear for the play-offs.
IMO.

Or maybe everyone overrated Oakland from the get go? Oakland isn't this bad, but they weren't that good when they were on a hot streak. It could be a case of Oakland regressing to the mean (albeit, it's pretty extreme). I look at their stats and...Coco Crisp at 34 is leading the team in batting average, their leader in home runs and runs batted in is Donaldson with 26 and 89 respectively. They have 4 guys with 10 home runs or more, by comparison the Orioles have 8, Detroit has 7 and the Angels has 5 I believe. Where's the offense going to come from? Kazmir was a great story, won his first 6 starts, but he's won 5 games since July 3 and won over half his games in the first two months of the season. Oakland fizzled out. Even if they make the playoffs, win the play-in game, do they really have a shot at going to the World Series?
BTW, I think the Cubs are a darkhorse for the division/wild card next year. The team is stacked with talent, and I'd go as far as saying they might have the pieces to put together a trade for Stanton.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Marlins plan to offer Giancarlo Stanton the largest contract in franchise history this offseason.
The largest contract the Marlins have ever handed out is Jose Reyes' $106 million deal, and a Stanton extension would obviously blow that number out of the water.

David Wright, is shut down for the remainder of the season with shoulder inflammation. What a subpar season for him.

Nats defeat the Braves 6-4 to take a 9 game lead over Atlanta. The magic number to clinch the NL East is 10.

The Orioles despite not having a true #1 starter continue to amaze me. 6-0 lead over Boston at the moment and it's just a matter of time before they clinch the division. I'm not entirely sure how far the team will go in the playoffs, especially if they face Detroit in the Division Series. They don't have the pitching to match up against the Tigers.

I remember a bunch of us were wondering what led to Ron Washington suddenly resigning as Rangers manager. It looks as if we may have found a reason why

Since going to the World Series in 2008, Maddon has managed to repeatedly get his team to the playoffs and has had 90+ wins in each of those seasons except 2009 and 2014. Not bad for a guy coaching for a team that's cheap as hell.

It looks as if we may have found a reason why Same word has been going around the local scene on this. Have heard from others in the area the popular rumor has been that he hired an attorney the day his resignation was announced. What a mess of a season for Texas. God damn.
