Yeah, I read about it, even considered starting a thread myself. I think this thing is a microcosm with everything wrong with the worst members of the Tumblr userbase: complete disconnect from reality, immaturity, irresponsibility, hypocrisy, unhealthy obsession with fandoms, etc... I especially love the fact that they had a panel denouncing the sexualization of women in the media... right after panels about gay ships (for the benefit of heterosexual females of course) and the sexiest British men with cheekbones. As it turns out, the panel about gay ships was run by three LGBT individuals rather than fawning straight people talking about JohnLock or whatever, and pointed out a lot of the troubles with fetishising same-sex couples, erasing bisexual characters, etc. It's pretty much the only thing I've seen praised from the whole rotten event.

So I ask a question... what exactly is Tumblr supposed to be? Just a social media platform. I used to mock it for the ridiculous stuff that would come out of there but it's probably one of very few online spaces certain folk can really be themselves on without fear of being harassed. It's supportive and comforting to such a degree it's become a negative in certain ways though.

Okay, my bad. I googled it just to be sure and although I'm not a fan of shipping in the first place (especially as people tend to take their ships waaaaayyyyyy too seriously) it does seem like it was about anything but objectifying homosexuality or forcing an orientation on characters who clearly do not share it. Really it seemed to be more about the lack of LGBT characters and romance in fiction in general. So as you said, it does sound like a shining jewel desperately sitting atop a mountain of crap (or piss-soaked ball pit in that case). The confusion must come from the fact that the organizers definitely advertised it as exactly what it wasn't (the exact term they used was “homoerotic subtext in fandoms and finding the gay ships for YOUR fandoms!!!”). But hey, I suppose advertising something as mature and intelligent did go against Dashcon's ethos.

So I ask a question... what exactly is Tumblr supposed to be? Tumblr is the love child of Twitter and Instagram. People blog about fandoms, porn, social justice, porn, politics, porn, and everything else that catches their fancy like porn.

My girlfriend is on Tumblr a lot, so I'm figuring she's going to have some funny stories she's heard about this.
Christ, a FANCon...would we make t-shirts for it but intentionally mislabel them so that they're all actually a size smaller than they say they are?

Well after reading that it sounds like the event was an even bigger clusterf*** than was reported at first.
But then again the people who organized this event were most likely the sort of dropkicks who couldn't organize a piss up in a brewery so is it really surprising.

I won't lie, I've not really seen much about this aside from the stuff posted in here but by golly, this is why if ANYONE organizes ANY event you need people with: a) Valid experience in ANY type of activity you want to do b) Security who checks everyone's IDs c) And are over 18/21 depending on state so if the top two fail you can get drunk and wander off elsewhere without it having an effect on young people (which may sound condescending, but speaking as someone in their mid-20s, f*** man, there's no excuse to risk anyone else's health/standing in society with bad planning/scams, and most people are naive past 21 I know, but look at the law/responsibility/guardian clauses and such)
Plus, in regards to BDSM stuff, if you're doing this shit at a convention with youths you better just...not do it. Seriously, possible STIs from it? Which prick was running that? Sexual freedom is well and good, but not when you take age into account and possible breaking of the law due to your lack of ID checking. Tools. Again, the reason why many things including sexual activities are over 21 ONLY and separate from any mixed activity convention plan. You don't want to break the law, and if you aren't doing that by accident then wow...creepy.
I'm laughing so hard but christ, I know a lot of the foolishness will stem from a) naivety and b) crooks & creeps trying to take advantage of naivety and get cash gain from it, but wow, even for a scam this is hilarious.
No one should EVER organize ANY large event without experience/proper certificates & proof of experience and safety (with youths in particular, dodgy as feck ground to walk, CRB check equivalent in the UK should be required), and a financial plan of action that isn't made up of pipe dreams and an infected rope burn experience for hopefully only those over the legal age in Illinois. It's not hard, but, eh, scammers are scammers, fools are fools etc. It'd be different if it was a group of people meeting up, but not an attempt to draw dozens and hundreds of mostly-strangers to a hotel, the moment you're trying to draw money you act professionally.
Weirdly I've seen no one really mention this on tumblr (I'm a light user who only follows friends/travel blogs but eh, still), so as an added note I suppose this is an instance where a miniscule section of a massive website had a hilarious collection of the naive/the awful/the hideous in the same spot, like a knock off bootleg Clint Eastwood western DVD. It may be hilarious and foolish, but you know it shouldn't have happened.

Even though tumblr had nothing to do with this(they even sued because of the conventions original name), I'm sure the MRAs and the "think of the white people!" crowd are dancing around about this.

Been following the action on r/tumblrinaction, some pretty hilariously sad shit.
I can't even begin to vocalise my disgust at the thought of folks getting STD's from the ballpit. So I'll let someone else take care of that for me:

Can't we just book them and the Tumblr hashtag activists into a 1-hour ball pit deathmatch and let both problems solve themselves?

Look, I'm all for ensuring that all people are treated with respect and aren't reduced to sex objects (although I'll also argue that there's nothing wrong with sexualizing adult people as long as you acknowledge that it's just a fantasy and they are still human beings and should be treated as such), but you can't on one hand condemn the objectification of women while simultaneously glorifying that of men. The objectification of men, at least in this instance, isn't part of a systematic problem of a society largely dominated by men that contributes to women not being seen as equals. So no, it's not equally as detrimental as objectifying women overall, because you can't go too far in the other direction when one problem is much bigger than the other.

There is a lack of self-awareness though. It'd be like me preaching racial equality but maintaining a prejudice against white people. By the pure definition of the word I'm not a "racist" since I don't have the power to disenfranchise whites, but it would make my earlier words hollow.
