I do think "Tweet Mark Ruffalo" or giving someone an extra hour in the ball pit is going to be my go to response to things from now until I forget about this ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Can't we just book them and the Tumblr hashtag activists into a 1-hour ball pit deathmatch and let both problems solve themselves? Why bother? Between them, Tumblr's the one usually in the right. The lesser of two evils is still evil. They both deserve to be in the deathmatch. Especially Tumblr hashtag activists, since they're the prime evil. Really though, they should just sit in the communal warmness of the ball pit together and talk about their issues and learn to respect one another. Then they can team up to fight their true enemy: reasonable people.

On the topic of Dashcon itself (that IS what this thread is about, after all), I would almost say that it seems intentionally mismanaged. It's hard to imagine someone screwing up even the basics of planning and organization so badly. Then again, to quote Scott Meyer, "It's easier to outsmart someone than it is to outdumb them."

Yeah, I read about it, even considered starting a thread myself. I think this thing is a microcosm with everything wrong with the worst members of the Tumblr userbase: complete disconnect from reality, immaturity, irresponsibility, hypocrisy, unhealthy obsession with fandoms, etc... I especially love the fact that they had a panel denouncing the sexualization of women in the media... right after panels about gay ships (for the benefit of heterosexual females of course) and the sexiest British men with cheekbones. Look, I'm all for ensuring that all people are treated with respect and aren't reduced to sex objects (although I'll also argue that there's nothing wrong with sexualizing adult people as long as you acknowledge that it's just a fantasy and they are still human beings and should be treated as such), but you can't on one hand condemn the objectification of women while simultaneously glorifying that of men. The objectification of men, at least in this instance, isn't part of a systematic problem of a society largely dominated by men that contributes to women not being seen as equals. So no, it's not equally as detrimental as objectifying women overall, because you can't go too far in the other direction when one problem is much bigger than the other. Two wrongs do not make a right. Sexism against men does not fix sexism against women. They're the same problem and neither is okay because it's still saying that a part of the population is inferior to another. You can't claim to be supporting equality while at the same time condoning discrimination.

Plus, in regards to BDSM stuff, if you're doing this shit at a convention with youths you better just...not do it. It's not that hard regulate it. The people at the door just have to do their f****ing job. At our local con, we have all sorts of 18+ events and we have plenty of minors running around. It's as simple as checking people's IDs. Of course this is dashcon. Even simple things aren't done right.

I like the mental image of a bunch of 17 year old "social justice warriors" being the "greater evil" in almost any situation. Oh noes, the teenagers who can't even vote yet are coming to 'round us up into sensitivity camps.
The more I read about this, the more baffled I get. I have to think there's some combination of ineptitude and greed going on; so much of what's coming out sounds like people who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground doing ignorant things, but then stuff like the $17,000 fundraiser sounds INCREDIBLY fishy.
That said, I now want a ball pit in my living room. Piss optional.

So, what happened to those $17,000?
From what I understand, they needed the money to pay the hotel a few days earlier than they'd expected. But shouldn't that mean that they were an extra $17,000+ when they then got to the point in time when they were planning to pay? So the $17,000 was basically a short-term emergency loan.

Btw, all reports suggest that the 'minors being let into adult panels' thing is complete bullshit, with the post that started it all being made 12 hours before any adult panels took place, and people confirming that they saw minors being turned away at the doors. Dashcon's an unmitigated failure, no two ways about it, but best to stick to the facts of why it was awful rather than believing stuff that's made up from whole cloth.

Well that makes things a bit better then, thanks for the clarification on that.

But shouldn't that mean that they were an extra $17,000+ when they then got to the point in time when they were planning to pay? So the $17,000 was basically a short-term emergency loan. I read that they only paid to secure the hotel, but it wasn't the entire amount. They didn't have ANY money, much less the 17,000 dollars they needed. The admins didn't work out a payment schedule with the hotel, so they asked for the money upfront and they didn't have it. Then they started asking con-goers for money. Oh, and most of these payments were through PayPal, and there's no confirmation the hotel even got the money they raised. This whole thing sounds like a trainwreck.
