Btw, all reports suggest that the 'minors being let into adult panels' thing is complete bullshit, with the post that started it all being made 12 hours before any adult panels took place, and people confirming that they saw minors being turned away at the doors. Dashcon's an unmitigated failure, no two ways about it, but best to stick to the facts of why it was awful rather than believing stuff that's made up from whole cloth. yeah, I can confirm the not checking ID's thing is 100% false, one of my friends ran one of the adult panels and she told me that story is complete crap they had a few people checking ID's during it, the story basically came from somebody seeing a few minors sitting in the room an hour before the panels were to start and just figured they were allowed in, the kids were kicked out before they started setting up things.

So, what happened to those $17,000? From what I understand, they needed the money to pay the hotel a few days earlier than they'd expected. But shouldn't that mean that they were an extra $17,000+ when they then got to the point in time when they were planning to pay? So the $17,000 was basically a short-term emergency loan. I read that they only paid to secure the hotel, but it wasn't the entire amount. They didn't have ANY money, much less the 17,000 dollars they needed. The admins didn't work out a payment schedule with the hotel, so they asked for the money upfront and they didn't have it. Then they started asking con-goers for money. Oh, and most of these payments were through PayPal, and there's no confirmation the hotel even got the money they raised. This whole thing sounds like a trainwreck. See now I was under the (uneducated because I have no REAL idea what's going on here) assumption that whoever set this thing up just pocketed it. Now from my understanding this was NOT a tumblr organized event but rather it was done by fans of the site right? So who are these people who set it up? I want to see their personal social media pages and see what chaos is there.

People assuming things with only the baseless of the evidence?! Nonsense, and from tumblr even more? Unheard of. Still, does not excuse everything else from the convention,so would not be surprising if it was true.

That may or may not have led to people needing Penicilin.

Oh yeah, I read somewhere (maybe one of the links in this thread) that some people sent money directly to the hotel's PayPal, leaving them confused about who it was from and what it was payment for.

Glad to hear that the "minors being allowed into 18+ panels" was bunk. These organizers are still going to get sued and possibly arrested, but at least "endangering the welfare of a minor" isn't going to be why.

I don't think I'll read this thread because of all the uncomfortable social justice warrior jokes I don't want to get heated BUT I CANT BELIEVE THIS the reason social justice warriors get a bad rep is due to the fact most (not all) say something rational half the time and then go on and say something so over the top and wrong that you have to wonder if they really believe what they're saying. I do my share of online activism, but I don't do what they do.

Why bother? Between them, Tumblr's the one usually in the right. On the topic of Dashcon itself (that IS what this thread is about, after all), I would almost say that it seems intentionally mismanaged. It's hard to imagine someone screwing up even the basics of planning and organization so badly. Then again, to quote Scott Meyer, "It's easier to outsmart someone than it is to outdumb them."

The thing I've come to realize with these "social justice warriors" is that a lot of them are awkward teenagers or young adults that have trouble expressing themselves for whatever reason. Their hearts are in the right places and I hope to see them become actual advocates for social justice when they mature (as in doing more than yelling at people/the wall on Tumblr using meme-generated phrases like "CAN WE NOT" or whatever), but the brain needs to catch up with the heart.

Exactly. As over the top and silly as some can be, it's hard for me to get too annoyed with them when their concerns are actually legit ones. I can't treat both extremes as equally bad when the other side - the MRA crowd, as it would seem- is using the same over the top tactics for reactionary nonsense that doesn't help anyone. At least feminism, in his basic unfiltered form, is something constructive.
