I never understood why anyone would want to watch it. Who wants to see other people trying to win money in a game of chance? The "best" poker players in the World are still influenced by the deck. It's sooooo boring. There is a great amount of skill involved. And none of that matters if the cards don't fall the right way.

Poker made for good Cheap Seats material. Yeah but what didn't? I still remember someone trying to tell me that Poker was a sport.

It was definitely a fad. Multiple Shows based on poker started popping up, and all sorts of Poker merchandise started popping up in random stores. It's popularity are why they had Bond playing it in Casino Royale instead of Baccarat. All those shows were created by poker sites like fulltiltpoker, pokerstars, etc. it was really just giant advertisement for the sites Most fads are selling something though. That doesn't make it any less of a fad.

I still watch poker on tv. I'm not ashamed to admit it. I find it to be good tv.

I'm just surprised that poker is dead in all of your towns.

I like playing poker.
However, perhaps I just had a bad run up in Blackhawk but the live players are some of the most bitter f***s I've ever seen. They were so awful to play with I prefer just to play online now. If someone is being a jackass in chat I can turn it off.
I also hate the people who made it their whole lives and would go on and on in poker lingo about all the bad beats they suffered. "Yeah, I had pocket rockets and hit a pair of duces on the flop and got another ace on the river, but some asshole had a pair of duces." Ugh.

Kind of like the guy that was pissed at me for calling his rockets pre-flop with pocket 3's on a $100 raise and hitting a 3 on the flop. Excuse me for reading you wrong and putting you on AK.

Perhaps if I ever got into playing, I might have enjoyed it...but f*** watching it. Seriously, that is outright boring as shit, and even worse there was a period where it was on GSN during a period when GSN was okay to watch...and for that I can say, f*** Poker. I'll let GSN's version slide, it had Jennifer Tilly hosting (and playing). (I watched for the action going on under her low-cut tops, not the stuff on the table.)

Some of them do it due to photophobia, which is a legit condition. I have it to an extent. Others, not so much, but it is a great way to hide a poker face. That makes sense, but yea I thought it was weak to hide a poker face-I would think they'd practice that Think of it like an arms race. You can practice lying, but people can practice reading "tells" and seeing through lies if they can pick up on it, or know enough about the game to be able to make an educated guess on the chances you're full of shit.

Not only that, GSN's version was a cash game in High Stakes Poker, which requires a lot of intestinal fortitude to put up $100,000 of your own money to play the game. I do believe that some of the best ways to learn the game was from that show, since it deals with real money. Not only that, it gave us some of the best Phil Hellmuth blow-ups in Poker TV history.

My buddies and I were lucky enough that the boom happened as most of us who didn't go to college were working and living at home, so we had the disposable income for playing every few days with the occasional tournament thrown in.

I watched more World Series of Poker than I'm comfortable admitting.
Like from the time of Moneymaker, up until that Aussie guy won it.
I dunno what it was.
Though I also went through a phase when I was really into trick shot pool.
...ESPN2 caught me at a bad time in the early-to-mid-2000s.

I like Hold Em but the craze was surely a fad.
It did give us Norman Chad though, who was and is outstanding.

Having poker on late night TV was both a good way to kill time and get some rest. Other than that, I didn't care much for it. I agree that watching televised poker was a good way to get some rest. ... in the sense that it literally put me to sleep when I worked at a call center and poker was often the only thing on the sole channel that played in the employee lounge. That @#$% could cure insomnia. Poker may be fun to play in real life, but I'd seriously rather watch paint dry than watch others play it on TV.

It fueled many college nights playing, some took it way too far/seriously.
Also, always found the sunglasses/hoodies/raptor masks lame as hell.
