I watched the hell out of The World Series of Poker on ESPN during its boom but god the commentary for them is some of the worst I've ever heard on programming. I'd rather have Michael Cole and JBL cover it (ACES ON THE RIVER MAGGLE! WE GO ALL IN ON FRIDAYS!). Not only that it felt like the people ESPN covered the most were some of the most unlikable people in the game.
Yeah it was a fad because you can only watch so much of it before it just gets to be the same old thing over and over. It was jumping the shark when ESPN did The World Series of Darts. Who would want to watch people throw darts?

I still follow it, Phil Hellmuth has had a good few years, he's up to 13 bracelets, he finally won a non Hold Em event, and won the Main Event of WSOP Europe.

I watched it for a couple of months, it was fun watching people psyche out each other and the personalities play out.
I do wonder though, with the hoodies/sunglasses etc, why people didn't just get a full face mask on, you'd be sitting there playing against Michael Myers.

It's a shame, we'll never experience that boom again. Kids these days don't know what it was like to see Moneymaker, or Celebrity appearances that meant something.

Who would want to watch people throw darts? Just as an aside but darts is one of the more popular TV sports in the UK these days. Pretty much every TV tournament is sold out months in advance, with 10k seat arenas used for the weekly Premier League series. As for poker I felt that one of the main draws of watching was as a way to improve your own game, it was interesting to see how a "professional" would play a hand compared to how you thought you would. In that sense I felt shows like High Stakes Poker were more interesting than the tournament based shows that would mainly concentrate on All ins. It may have been a fad of sorts, but I think a big reason TV coverage dropped off was the ruling that made online poker illegal in the US. With Full Tilt going under and no point in the other online sites doing any advertising, there was always going to be less shows made.

Online poker isn't illegal in America, just only if you do cash games. Also Full Tilt is back (and now owned by PokerStars as part of a settlement) and both of them will be allowed to resume cash games for Americans whenever a legal framework for licenses is able to be provided.

Still, the negativity around poker at the time (specifically around FT with hundreds of dollars of players money going missing and the blame, rightly or wrongly, being at least partially attributed to the TV celebs like Lederer and Ferguson) would have had a huge detriment to the popularity at the time. If/when cash games do get running again it would be a case of putting the genie back in the bottle for the mainstream popularity to reach the same level again.

I know your speaking sarcastically, but is Moneymaker even that good? Feel like his "stardom" benefite from beingthe first main event winner of the boom period

There is a great amount of skill involved. And none of that matters if the cards don't fall the right way. You dont need good cards to win in Poker. Being able to bluff is a skill.

Yeah, the next three winners of the WSOP were the genuine articles in Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem and Jamie Gold.

As far as pro poker players go, he's honestly crap. Obviously the Hogan of his era. He's not even Hogan. Moneymaker was a 1-hit wonder. This makes him more along the lines of a Wildfire Tommy Rich. 1 Championship, a below-average career afterwards.

Even though I wasn't and still currently am not able to gamble legally, my father was into the poker fad, and he had this poker video game, and I eventually got around to playing it.
I know everything about No Limit Hold Em, but that's about it.
