So it looks like we're starting to see a new trend emerge in the gaming world of recent games getting "remastered" for the new consoles. And by recent, I mean VERY recent. The Last of Us is one of the best games I've ever played, and I loved every minute of it. But was it really necessary to release a new version of it a year later? It's also happening with Grand Theft Auto V, but at least that coincides with the PC release.
Now I'm not against things like HD collections of games that are several years old and things like that. Like the Ratchet & Clank HD collection, or the Halo: Combat Evolved anniversary edition. Those games had plenty of years behind them before getting re-released, so that makes more sense to me. But games that are barely a couple of years old or less I just don't see the point in.
To be fair The Last of Us is a masterpiece, and so is GTA V, and I don't fault anyone who wants to have the newer versions, I'll more than likely get the newer version of GTA V myself, so admittedly I'm not immune. But I just don't think it would be a very good idea if all the publishers started doing this with a lot of frequency. I mean if Activision starts remastering all of the Call of Duty's, or Ubisoft starts doing it with Assassin's Creed, and so on, it'll really start alienating consumers, and stifle the creativity of developers to come up with new experiences.
Just something I was thinking about.

See, Ducktales or Castle of Illusion getting remakes make sense since they're over 20 years old. I would have much more respect for Sony and Rockstar if they were just open about wanting them to have a next gen release instead of going "oh it's remastered so it's the definitive edition"
Just say you wanted to release it on a next gen console, most gamers won't be too upset. BTW, I'm still super pissed about GTA V. Considering GTA IV still barely runs on PCs (IIRC it wouldn't work on launch if your pc had a dual core processor and they still are silent about removing GFWL when that service dies), Rockstar don't deserve their pc userbase.

That's funny, I was playing GTA IV on my laptop last night, it had been awhile since I played so when the GFWL prompt popped up it caught me off guard. But speaking of GTA, I wouldn't mind seeing an HD update of San Andreas since that game is about to be a decade old. But I doubt that will happen considering both Sony and Microsoft charge still charge 15 friggin dollars to download that game.

The remasters of GTAV and The Last of Us are obviously just because there's easy money to be made from porting them to the next gen. At least they're making the effort to optimise the games rather than just porting them as is with no improvements.

If all of a sudden we start seeing things like Lolipop Chainsaw Remastered, we're in trouble.

Well, to be fair, The Last of Us was a PS3 exclusive and there are a lot of people who have a PS4 that never owned a PS3 so they missed out on the chance to play TLOU.

There's a huge drought for the new consoles right now. Developers and publishers are trying to fill that hole but can't yet commit to a full-on new game. Nobody wants their debut on a new, powerful machine to suck, so...here we are with some remasters for awhile, or at least until we see what people like Naughty Dog and Rockstar are actually working on. Honestly though? I'd rather just see them take a chance and put out something new. It's not like people stopped playing games by Rare just because they put out Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

I'd love to see more classic games remade if they were done as well as Ducktales and Castle of Illusion.

I don't see a problem with it. Making an already great game even better with more powerful hardware is a pretty cool idea, I think.

It's just because the new generation of consoles wasn't quite ready when these games were released, otherwise they would've been released simultaneously on them like other recent games were. (Black Flag, for example.)
Now if we're going to complain about video game remasters, I say complain about all these turbo HD remixes of PS2 games that amount to little more than things being a little more shiny due to HD and still being charged full price for.
If I'm paying full price for a remake of a video game, I expect a remade video game from the ground up, not just something they put a new filter over.

It's not even like The Last of Us needed to be "remastered" as it already looked pretty damn good on PS3. Cash grab and that's it. Scumbags.

In the case of GTA V, it came out during the same holiday season as the new generation consoles did. It really should have just came out on PS4, Xbox One and PC in the first place, even if it meant delaying the PS3 and 360 versions.

It wasn't so much about the look though, the big difference is the framerate went up and with it the aiming mechanic got sharper. Also, ND wanted to make it to get their programmers used to working on the hardware. Also as said,PS4 has a lot of owners who didn't have a chance to play it last gen. And if they didn't do it, there just wouldn't have been a decent PS4 game this summer. If Sony doesn't get something out they are screwed and a remaster was the only thing they could do fast enough. Overall though a really important thing to remember is that a ton of the HD ports or remaster are done by studios that only do ports, TLOU and GTAV are the only ones done in house that I am aware of. And both of those studios are big with more than one team. And if you don't want them or like them, don't them. The games existing don't affect you unless you let them.

Well the HD collection of Ratchet & Clank was pretty much just glossied up versions... However it was only 30 dollars, and you got 3 games. Stuff like that is fine.

Honestly, I wish they wouldn't use a buzzword like "Remaster." It's a glorified port.
My sole issue is these "remasters" have opened a can worms of console developers no longer having to include backwards compatibility.

And after how it affected the PS3 early on,both Sony and MS were unlikely to do it anyway. It is a bit of bad business in the long run.

I never got around to the Last of Us and the fact that there's still a few newer release PS3 games that I want to play but didn't is a major factor against me trading in my previous gen consoles for a PS4. You're right, it's scummy as f*** for them to provide an avenue for people like me to play a game they wanna try while also upgrading consoles.

Today's world of pop culture is like the memory of a goldfish. If you don't make the most of something while it's trending, you lose the attention of the masses.

It's never too soon for a bunch of people with nothing but contempt for video games to make more money.
