When Dallas Page debuted in WWE as Sara's stalker, Jim Ross did an interview with her and Undertaker and she referred to her husband as "Mark." You could tell 'Taker was REALLY pissed about it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mmbvOKZy8gLol, the guy has lived in kayfabe mode for years, I can understand why he would get mad, I read a blog from somebody that used to work for creative, he heavily implied that Taker basically booked himself, that Taker understood his character more than anyone else. I think Mark still thinks he's the character, according to Paul London he used to live in the same town as Undertaker, and the guy had DEADMAN on his license's plates, he aparently used to wear his own merch according to London. Another funny way he keeps kayfabe is the fact that he won't even appear in his wife's instagram, she made a joke about it posing with a figure of Taker. Maybe that's why he was so successful with the gimmick. The first time I remember seeing Taker was in '89 or so in the Memphis territory where he was Master of Pain, then of course his Mean Mark run in WCW. It occurred to me then just how much MoP and Mean Mark were just like the biker Undertaker, so I think that's definitely just him. The Deadman is more or less an exaggeration of who he is outside the ring, just like Macho Man was an exaggerated Randy Poffo and a thousand other guys with successful characters just played amped up versions of themselves in front of the camera.

Yeah you're right I meant the persona, the name of the undertaker it's not like mark thinks he's a zombie lol, I think his bad ass biker persona was him, behind the scenes he also started a biker gang brotherhood, the Bone Street Krew. I think he always looked awkward as Master of Pain, Mean Mark, and American Bad Ass, as the deadman he always felt at home.

Oh and my contribution - Shamrock calling Undertaker "Mark" when they were going with the whole "Mark Calaway is insane and believes he actually is his character" angle. Really? I just remember Taker one day cutting a weird promo, all of his promos that lasted more than 5 minutes sucked, in it he was talking about how he was the only guy loyal to Vince, i can't imagine being a good idea telling the viewers that Undertaker was just a character, I bet taker wasn't happy at all. The promo you speak of was prior to KOTR 98 and while somewhat of a shoot, still kept kayfabe. It was really good. The Shamrock/Taker thing happened at Backlash 99. Taker had been getting darker and darker since the Rumble and I think as an effort to fit him in to the more "real" style product they went with the idea that Mark truly believed he was the Undertaker. Owen died and Taker just became a pre-biker hybrid of darkness and badass. There was more than one promo - I think Shamrock cut two himself - in which they pleaded with "Mark" to stop it.

ok this was stupid, "Mark, Its about time you got brought to reality." I can see Undertaker grinding his teeth at that, he wanted to kill the writer possibly...it was kinda fun watching Shamrock throwing kinda stiff punches at Undertaker though...

I remember very vividly one time in either '98 or '99, Vince McMahon giving the Rock the business and he reminded him who owned his ass and referenced him as DWAYNE, and when I realized that was his real name, I stopped thinking the Rock was cool, because seriously, what a doofy name for a dude that cool.
I apologize to everybody on F.A.N. named Dwayne.

During the feud with HHH/Chyna there was a segment where Goldust and Marlena were in street chlothes in the front row and one of the announcers says "Thats Dustin and Terri.. I mean Goldust and Marlena"

And of course, like the other thread mentioned, this isn't something new - Bill Watts used Junkyard Dog's real name to bury him after JYD left for WWF. When Lance Von Erich left World Class, Fritz went on TV, admitted Lance was just some local guy named Ricky Vaughn and swore he'd never have him in his promotion again.

It was also the downfall of WCCW, Gary Hart said that people came up to him asking him why the Von Erich's lied.

World Class was swirling around in the shitter long before that; it wasn't the start of the fall or even the end, just another bump that helped it finally flush years later.

Shit, sorry I forgot to put that it wasn't the main cause, but the downfall was when the tragedies started, and people realized that the Von Erich's lied to them, that they weren't the good religious boys they claimed to be. It wasn't the start of the fall, it helped though. An interesting note is that the only reason Fritz, on tv, said that he was a fake Von Erich was because he jumped to another company, not because people were outraged

Hickenbottom lol, maybe that's why he was such an asshole in the 90s kids can be cruel.. When Vince said Phil, Punk wanted to beat him up, he didn't expected that.
