Calling Michelle Obama a "tranny" shouldn't even qualify as a joke. Where's the set up? Where's the punchline? Where's the satire or the wit? It's just a nasty thing to say from a woman who has become less of a "comedian" and more another word beginning with c. It's not a joke in the sense you defined it, but it was meant as humor. That doesn't mean you have to think it's funny, or I have to think it's funny (I don't), but yes, there is a whole broad category of comedy that's defined by making observations and statements like that. As a sidenote, I can't stand most comedians, and find most of them anywhere from annoying to repugnant. But...it is a legitimate form of comedy, however unfunny it may be.

Exactly what I said, only more clean and well thought out. Bravo.

she makes fashion police unwatchable. everyone just sits around and waits for her to say something shocking so they can all do the face, and awkwardly clap after.

To anyone who really dislikes her personally, watch the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. You see her in a different light afterwards. Yes, she says offensive things for shock value and she's not the only one. I'm glad she doesn't do what most others do and make a fake PR apology where she takes it back. I don't like a lot of the stuff she says, but at least she sticks by it. For a better put version of what I'm trying to say, read this article Gilbert Gottfried did for Playboy about how there's too much apologizing now: www.playboy.com/articles/stop-saying-sorry-on-twitter

It's not even a matter of whether one finds it funny or not, but I question whether simply calling someone something, especially an offensive term, even qualifies structurally as a form of comedy, or whether in this case, it's just someone being an outright bitch.

Joan Rivers' recent "comedy" has equated to basically this... Me: Hi Bob Bob: Hi Hit Girl Me: Bob Bob: Yes? Me: You are a bastard, your wife is a lesbian, and your children will grow up to be drug addicts. *I walk away, leaving Bob bewildered*

I'm not trying to be funny at all, but with what happened to Jake Roberts as well, the last day really sucked for people with the initials "JR". Apologies to anyone offended by that comment.

A reporter literally asked Joan Rivers if there would ever be a gay president and if the person though Joan Rivers would give a serious answer the reporter has no idea who Joan Rivers is. Or is brilliant in knowing the answer would go viral. I'm not saying you have to like it or anyone does, I don't think the joke was particularly funny myself but she was put in a weird spot with that question anyways where the answer would either be hokey or offensive. People can be offended, no one needs to like her but it's bananas that we're going to be calling her a "comedian" with quotes from here on in when most actual comedians revere her.

Throwing insults is used as a form of comedy. Is it good comedy? I don't think it is, but that's neither here nor there.

Joan Rivers rules. I never miss an interview on a talk show when she's on. One the hardest working people in the biz. That is all.
