Trent Dilfer would be lucky if he managed to land on a team during The XFL's lone season.

I finally finished "Bullies of Baltimore" after multiple starts and stops, and there's a reason why it took me several viewings to get through it: it's quite bad. "30 for 30" used to be paramount among sports documentaries. It was the signature brand. It allowed independent voices to tell the stories about the teams, athletes, and moments that were overlooked, overshadowed, or forgotten to time. But somewhere along the lines (around when creator Bill Simmons left ESPN in 2015), the quality of "30 for 30" declined rapidly, and I think/hope "Bullies of Baltimore" might have been the nadir. There was no difference between "Bullies of Baltimore" and the NFL-produced "America's Game" documentary series. It was a 90-minute puff piece about the glory days of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, with the strangest framing device ever (an on-stage team reunion filmed in Baltimore last May), wherein guys like Shannon Sharpe, Ray Lewis, Trent Dilfer, and Tony Siragusa wax poetic about how funny, cool, and badass they were. The documentary also hints at how the 2000 Ravens were disliked by the majority of NFL fans, but says that it was because they were brash trash-talkers, ignoring the enormous elephant in the room - the reason NFL fans didn't like them was because of Ray Lewis, who was a few months removed from being charged with murder for a double-stabbing outside of a party in Atlanta. But you wouldn't know that was even an issue, because the totality of the controversy surrounding Ray Lewis gets maybe 90 seconds in the beginning of the documentary and is quickly washed aside until the Super Bowl week discussion when the entire subject was, "We should have been talking about the game, not any outside distractions." It's just a shame to see how far "30 for 30" has fallen, that it's now league-endorsed hagiographies instead of compelling documentaries like we saw from 2009 through 2015. It has Trent Dilfer also saying QBs today aren't impressive which is rich from a dude who wasn't any good. Trent Dilfer is f***ing meme that people use to go "Dan Marino doesn't have a ring but this geek does".

Sure he wasn't an all pro QB, but Lay off Trent Dilfer guys. Not to be a downer, but please remember that years back, he lost his 5 year old son to heart disease.

Dilfer may not be great, but I'd say that Peyton Manning's 2nd ring has it locked as the worst QB to start for a Super Bowl winner.
He threw 9 touchdowns and 17 picks that season, and that was with missing significant time.

Dilfer I've had a love hate relationship with. When he started with ESPN I couldn't stand him. Felt he was pretentious and had too much of the "you didn't play so you don't know" attitude to him.
Since he started coaching? He's mellowed out a lot and has become very good at articulating strengths and weaknesses
As for the decline in 30 for 30s? While ESPN is still the biggest sports channel, they've gotten to the point where they no longer control content because the leagues (mainly NFL) controls them. THey constantly find themselves needing to do mass layoffs because the heads constantly outbid themselves for broadcasting rights. They've basically have become cheerleaders for the NFL. I'd say for the NBA too but I don't think that's accurate (more or less just cheerleaders for LeBron). It's why you are seeing very talented analysts leave for other networks. They are allowed to be more open. ESPN is scared of pissing off the NFL. places like WBD, Amazon, and Fox? Not at all

Made in America" or "The Last Dance," when was the last time "30 for 30" produced a quality documentary that really challenged the status quo or questioned the narrative? The problem is that a majority of the documentary subjects now have so much control over what goes in the film itself, that their participation dictates the direction of the documentary. That's how you end up with hagiographies like "Bullies of Baltimore" or "Long Gone Summer." Ray Lewis isn't going to play ball if your documentary leans too heavily on his murder trial, and Mark McGwire is probably going to balk if you focus on steroid allegations. I think the last time I watched a "30 for 30" that presented a subject, warts and all, might have been "Seau" or "The Last Days of Knight." And those aired five years ago. Since then, it's been a non-stop parade of league- and player-approved puff pieces.

They showed the love those defensive players had for Buddy Ryan. I teared up at the end.

I have the 30 for 30 Blu-ray package that included the first couple (few) seasons... I don't think there is a bad film in that bunch. There may be some I'm less interested than others, but they definitely aren't bad.

That Denver defense was so damn good that Brock Oswiler was enough to win that SB

Peyton Manning was awful in the season he won his second Super Bowl. But he was also a legendary quarterback with an entire career to back him up as one of the best to ever play his position. He was just hurt and old. And tired. And worked with f***ing children.
Trent Dilfer was just a scrub.

Trent Dilfer was a tad better than Rex Grossman. The Bears the season they lost to Peyton and the Colts had such a great defense that they covered for Rex all year.... until the Super Bowl where they just couldn't do enough to overcome Rex's badness.

Wtf? You guys didn't tell me they were doing a 30 for 30 on AMERICAN GLADIATORS!?! I hope they have an interview with current-day Gemini as well as a long segment on how the show went downhill right as they went from the hand-bike to the versaclimber to start the Eliminator. This is what I want. Trash TV about dudes who were out of their mind on steroids, not sob stories. If you're done telling great stories (and god knows they have been for a while), then tell reasonably bad stories about good topics. Especially topics that make me nostalgic for my childhood. I can't wait to watch it.
