Am I the only one who actually had to download the album? It was under recent purchases but it wasnt on my phone and I didn't have to put it on my phone Yeah, I had to physically download it. It showed up under purchases in the "cloud play" thing though.

Haven't checked my ITunes yet.
If I wanted this album surely I would just download it on my own accord.
Least it wasn't something like Niki manaj I suppose

Worst of all, we will all continue to ignore the Terms and Conditions/User Agreements/whatever.

A lot of people do (myself included) and I think that might be why so many people had the album imposed on them.

It was definitely so very Bono/Apple. "Of course our users/fans will want it, because we told them they want it." But yeah - it was pretty crazy. They should have just sent an iTunes email with the option to add it to your library for free. Come on, who wouldn't want a free album from those loveable lads from Liverpool?

Watch as there will be this big deal at the end of the week saying U2 broke the record of must download album in history. Like it was something big.

Yes, they should have made it available to download instead of automatically adding it to your account.

I didn't really see the fuss really if you don't like U2 don't listen to the album but saying that if, say, The Script or Pink released free albums on iTunes I doubt I'd be happy to have that in my library! The issue is that it was placed on every iPhone without notification or permission and made impossible to delete without special tools. It's probably not a great move for apple, what with a lot of talk about cell phone privacy being invaded and whatnot. Plus it's U2. They're horrible. They were flat out amazing in the 80's and 90's. I really don't see what the problem is. The whole album probably takes up the tiniest fraction of the available memory on those devices, so it harms nothing for it to be there. Besides, how ridiculous is it that people are up in arms that they were given something for free that many would have simply stolen anyways?

Permission probably was granted. I can't say for sure but it's probably there in the Terms and Conditions that we all ignore and just click "agree". If it wasn't then I'd imagine they'd be in some legal trouble. None of that changes the fact that Bono is a cretin though. It does say they can put stuff on your computer like that in the EULA, I think. Still, it doesn't make it an ethical thing to do. Yes it does. That you, or any other iTunes user didn't read the EULA is not the fault of Apple. Ya, I had to go out of my way to download it to my phone and computer. That's why it seems so weird that people are complaining Do you have iTunes set up to automatically download purchases? "And for the people out there who have no interest in checking us out, look at it this way… the blood, sweat and tears of some Irish guys are in your junk mail."
f*** off Bono.

The fact is that never in my wildest dreams had I thought they'd do something as sinister as spreading about U2's latest album for free.

And I see that its no longer cool to like U2. Don't care. In 2011 I waited 7 hours in line to be 3 rows from front on the 360 Tour. U2 is the best concert I've ever seen, absolute blast to watch and I still love all their music

Complete and utter crap, even if it's free, is still complete and utter crap.

Complete and utter crap, even if it's free, is still complete and utter crap. I don't think so. It's different, but it's not crap. "Every Breaking Wave" may be one of the best songs they've ever recorded.

I can go on about how much I hate U2, but I don't want to disrespect their fans. So if you like them and kept the record, great!

The amount of whining surrounding this whole situation is totally insane to me. Not just here, everywhere.
And despite what people say, I get the distinct impression that it's U2, not that they put a free album of any kind on their phones or anything.
But then, I don't really get the U2 hate, either. Sure, their last couple of albums were less than savory, but so what? Every band goes through that phase. And Bono is doing a lot of great things in the world. Just because the South Park guys made fun of him doesn't mean suddenly everyone forever should hate him/the band.
Also, the new album was pretty mediocre, but better than the last two. A few really great songs, and a lot of filler.

Besides, how ridiculous is it that people are up in arms that they were given something for free that many would have simply stolen anyways? Five reasons (of probably more) to explain the backlash: 1. You get the sense that Apple is invading what feels like a private space. The average person's playlist has all been curated and OK'ed by them and doesn't have just random artists floating around, no matter how big they are. They want that world to be all theirs. 2. If the person sets Shuffle, they would presumably have to hear this album they don't want at some point. Maybe they are a rap fan or a country fan or an EDM fan or a metal fan and don't want any alt-rock in there to begin with. 3. Some people flat out think that U2 sucks or are overbearing or any number of things, and don't want to see their name or music when going through their music inventory. I don't know who your least favorite artist is, but let's assume it's Justin Bieber or Nickelback (two entities tons of people hate). If a Bieber or Nickelback album was dropped right into your music directory, you would probably very much want it out and not want it to be associated with what you have curated. 4. Just because some people would have stolen it doesn't mean the entire population needs to have it magically inserted into their directory. That's a wildly narcissistic way of thinking, not to mention an awful marketing idea. 5. Speaking of which, Bono comes off as an insufferable narcissist quite often and his image has created a lot of bad will for the band that is carrying through this. I don't imagine there would be the heightened level of backlash if it featured a record by a band or artist who was generally beloved, like if it was some collection of unreleased Beatles music.
