The amount of whining surrounding this whole situation is totally insane to me. Not just here, everywhere. And despite what people say, I get the distinct impression that it's U2, not that they put a free album of any kind on their phones or anything. But then, I don't really get the U2 hate, either. Sure, their last couple of albums were less than savory, but so what? Every band goes through that phase. And Bono is doing a lot of great things in the world. Just because the South Park guys made fun of him doesn't mean suddenly everyone forever should hate him/the band. Also, the new album was pretty mediocre, but better than the last two. A few really great songs, and a lot of filler. Better than HTDAAB maybe. Loved No Line on the Horizon though, myself.

They were flat out amazing in the 80's and 90's. I really don't see what the problem is. The whole album probably takes up the tiniest fraction of the available memory on those devices, so it harms nothing for it to be there. Besides, how ridiculous is it that people are up in arms that they were given something for free that many would have simply stolen anyways? 5. Speaking of which, Bono comes off as an insufferable narcissist quite often and his image has created a lot of bad will for the band that is carrying through this. I don't imagine there would be the heightened level of backlash if it featured a record by a band or artist who was generally beloved, like if it was some collection of unreleased Beatles music. Bono himself fully admits to having a massive ego. He's even poked fun at the fact numerous times. I wouldn't call this narcissistic, but that just might be me.

And this is why I don't do iPods at all. It seems like such a hassle just to delete something or do something so basic.

Complete and utter crap, even if it's free, is still complete and utter crap. It's no skin off my teeth, seeing as how it's something I paid no money for. But yeah, I've started to listen to it, and the first three tracks don't do anything for me. I don't regret downloading it, since, hey, in economic terms, I've got nothing to lose. But yeah, this album so far isn't a winner with me. Neither was No Line On the Horizon. It really seems like U2 has run out of ideas.

I just thought they were boring and uninspired. But we all have our own tastes. Nothing wrong with enjoying those albums.

Given that the album couldn't even be deleted at first I think this would have been a better release for All That You Can't Leave Behind.

I can see being upset that it was downloaded to your device without knowing (even though it takes all of one minute to remove from an iPhone, no need for any tools or even plugging it into your Mac/PC, just swipe it away song by song like any other album) but people are getting pissed that it is even associated with their account, that is what I don't get. Just bitching to be bitching it seems.

Seems reasonable to me that if people hate U2 and their terrible f***ing music and their dickhead singer then it'd be likely that one of the first things they'll do in an age of everybody being able to open their virtual yaps with the blink of an eye or an "OK Google" is tell whatever social platform is easiest about their mild annoyance. I'm speaking with a mild bias though because I hate this stupid band and am highly amused that quite a huge amount of people are f***ed off over this little stunt.

Welp. I'm never buying Apple anything. The streak will continue.
This is absolutely wrong.

Reasons why people are complaining:
1) U2 are like Coldplay, are like Nickelback, are like other name bands people hate in a bandwagon (whether they have legitimate feelings or not, it's a popular thing to do, complaining is fun!) 2) Apple are annoying little update monsters and if people want to remove the album without deleting individual tracks for those holding off on the new iTunes (for several reasons) they have to download the new iTunes to use it. 3) Instant downloads/permissions are a problem, people only realize the ramifications of this when they get something they don't want, free or not.
The third point is the HUGE issue, it's not the idea that it's just one U2 album to some of us -I don't mind modern U2 in fact- but it's a worry if you have a small memory in the device you use your itunes with, or if you consider that they could just shove TONS of albums at you in future if it became a precedent. This is something anyone involved in music will be familiar with worrying about.
Think of it, one day you turn on your phone/iPod and then Apple have Radio Playlisted[TM] your ipod? Because you forgot to turn off automatic downloads of "purchased" albums.
The lesser problem is that it's a forceful push of an album onto people and more that if this becomes a thing which happens relatively quickly in future, if corporate monster Apple push it in agreement with certain labels/distributors, it could really put tunnel vision on to people who don't sort of say 'sod off.'
Apple are dicks, everyone knows it, but people should leave them behind if it's a bother. Mild inconvenience whilst you transfer your sound files and work out how to auto-update your podcasts on other devices, but blah...sorry, after the iLok bullshit they pulled with every version of ProTools those money sucking corporate jackasses should be disliked more readily.
TL;DR version - Many complaints will be bandwagon jumping hatred of a name band that are VERY popular to dislike (as popular as they are to the people who like the bands), but it's really a worrying view of an Apple future that's annoyed a great deal of people.

You'd be surprised by how many bands who have such worldwide appeal would be able to say 'screw the sales, we'll have the future tour promotion' if they struck a decent deal with Apple/their own label who take profit from usual sales. Everything is a test run to see how it could work in future. I do hope you're right though.

Basically, they bought half a billion their album. It wasn't cheap.

I guess I'm more worried due to plausible regional (whether it's US only/Aus only/UK/Europe only etc) purchasing of albums being possible for most large labels, and could be something done for smaller -compared to U2- popular bands on major labels. ...if digital album prices suddenly drop on itunes in future my paranoia will go into overdrive!

You gotta be kind of huge to pull stunts like this. Huge musicians aren't really around anymore. The people with the clout to do this are U2, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elvis, the Beatles....it really runs dry that and Elvis, Jackson and most of the Beatles are most decidedly dead. You gotta be huge, huge, for an entire album. Now singles and videos? Yeah, that could scourge us. I can see that. Entire albums? Very, very, very few people.

Yeah, I just mean in terms of compilation albums and if there's a huge Apple/label type deal in future. I should have really explained that more in my initial post as I agree with your whole post here. Not that this is happening now but if a label losing a fair bit of cash in both physical/digital production told Apple to push 3/4 tracks per band they have on their label onto an instant download service and such it would be bad for people who didn't turn off automatic downloads/updates. Even then turning off automatic updates on Apple software can be worked around (save for the inevitable legal battles with consumer rights) if Apple ever say 'right, you NEED to update to the latest version, sign off on our new terms as well'. It seems odd to discuss but it's something a lot of people have been concerned with over the years, so anytime you're told a huge service put an album on every users Apple hardware on the entire planet it rings alarm bells and makes me remember 1,000 conversations with folks involved in distribution. Not that it's a problem if it takes a long while, I put my hope in people realizing Apple are tools before they end up going with better hardware/software. (The additional fee iLok need in ProTools hatred may be rearing it's head within the last sentence...)
