I had a cute female boss once. I didn't want to beat her, but I did want to spank her.

I was watching some attitude era WWF last night. And part of me wonders if the biggest appeal with Austin was that he was an "everyman". He was a blank canvas really, his look was pretty generic, he could have been any faceless blue collar worker in America, but he was one who was on TV standing up to his boss and taking no shit.
In fact if you think about it in a company full of all these colourful characters his look and persona was pretty basic really.
Bryan is the modern day equivalent, he's pretty much the everyman neckbeard who is standing up to corporate management and all its bullshit
It's the same story but different takes on it for different times and a different world.

It is true, to an extent. But, really it's typical revisionist history from the WWE. While the 90s ached for an anti-hero, as well as he was a great antithesis to the NWO (granted, Austin's buildup predated the NWO)... the "punching your boss" thing was only a small sliver of why people enjoyed it so much.
Once the Montreal Screwjob occurred, Vince McMahon became public enemy number 1 in wrestling. It was weird, people enjoyed the product, wanted it to succeed, and supported what they did... but they HATED Vince for what he did to Bret Hart. Not to mention the half-assed "Bret Screwed Bret" cop-out and the Wrestling With Shadows documentary. Basically, what people wanted to see was Vince McMahon humiliated, backed into a corner, fighting for his life, being a demonic son of a bitch boss, and be facing a guy who was out to screw him just as badly as Vince screwed Bret in Montreal. Austin was the right guy, the right attitude, and Vince was the right evil archetype at the right time... you really couldn't plan it better.
In fact, it all came together SO well, people started rumors (that still exist today) that the Montreal Screwjob was just a huge angle to turn Bret into the ultimate babyface (as he was concerned his heel turn wouldn't be able to be corrected) and Vince, the ultimate heel, to set up the Austin feud.
Basically, the success simply came from everybody getting exactly what they wanted at one point.
