Ebola has shown the major problem with 24 hour news channels. They have too much time to fill so they generally manufacture the news. Constant fearmongering and hysteria. The average citizen is at more risk from dying by falling over their own feet than being killed by Ebola, but if you watch the cable news channels, you'd think that it's like something from 28 Days Later. Even the graphics used on these news channels (lots of red, of course) are designed to spread terror and paranoia. I try to stay away from those channels unless it's election day, hey their maps are accurate usually with vote counts, but do they already have all of their "Ebola Warning" splash screens made up and rolling every time it gets mentioned. Bonus points for ominous music playing when they show those.

I don't have time for Ebola.
I'm still busy dying from West Nile, Bird Flu, and Swine Flu.

They're flying in the nurse from Dallas to Frederick Airport, 30 minutes from my house to go to FMH...5 minutes from my work.
Starting to get a little too close to home.

This would be the time Brain Gremlin would tell people to invest in canned goods and shotguns

I've had a friend on facebook freaking out about it. Including a great rant from others about Obama's plot to bring ebola to the country and something about fema camps. It was insane and would have been funny, except they actually believed it.

It really kills me. I come from a small town and it is pretty backwoods if I'm to be honest. You won't believe the madness these folks are posting over this stuff. It's insane. I'm seeing people I assumed were level headed turning into nuts over nothing. Keep in mind most of these folks are asking how to purchase full body suits, but refusing a flu shot.

More people will die from the Flu than Ebola this year.

More people will die in America accidentally killing themselves panicking about Ebola than being killed by Ebola.

I've also enjoyed the people believing random twitter posts about people being sick or airports passing out masks, yet when a news report comes on, they yell "liars."

WWE should get in on this. Do an ongoing storyline where a mutant strain of Ebola is sweeping through the roster.
One episode of RAW will end with John Cena dropping to the mat, convulsing, then getting up and looking at the camera with blood red eyes.
Cole will saying "Oh my god, Cena is infected!!!"
A week later, Cena will be fine.

It's a frame of reference to show Ebola isn't a serious issue right now to the population. It's just not.

I think the point being is in a developed country like the US you'd have to actually try really hard to catch it. It's not something you're going to catch simply by minding your own business. Yes, it's a horrible, deadly disease, but not one that poses a widespread risk to the general population.

What is far more likely is that both of these nurses did not take proper care when removing their hazmat suits when dealing with the guy. It is not a simple task to suit up and then properly unsuit after you are done. I seriously doubt either of them had proper training or if they had it wasn't recent. This is the reason that they are shipping patients to specific centers now. There are a handful of facilities where training, routine, and equipment are considered up to the task to prevent these type of infections. Didn't it come out that the hospital totally messed up the entire situation with how they handled the guy or am I just making that up? No, you are not making it up. They were infected treating the guy they first dismissed. What is far more likely is that both of these nurses did not take proper care when removing their hazmat suits when dealing with the guy. There are a handful of facilities where training, routine, and equipment are considered up to the task to prevent these type of infections. From what I've read, they didn't have full hazmat suits. I am beginning to hear that they did not have proper suits as well. There was a nurse from the hospital that stated on TV that they had them layer surgical gowns, booties, and gloves but this left openings, including one at the neck where she was instructed to cover said gap with strips of tape. That is not adequate for a BSL 4 pathogen. That hospital is going to get sued into oblivion.

9,000 documented infections with 5,000 deaths, with estimations there could be up to 2.5x more undocumented cases.
An expected rise of new weekly infections from 1,000 to 10,000 by December.
A horrific 71% fatality rate (which is why a disease such as Ebola is so much more threatening than something like the flu).
A CDC and medical facilities which have made multiple egregious errors, showing a clear lack of preparation.
At this point, if you're not at least slightly concerned, you're either not paying attention, or you're foolishly and carelessly arrogant.
