I gave her a chance and was impressed with her match with naomi on nxt. But to me, she jumped the shark when she became the focal point of raw and the wwe title scene and then became gm. After that, i stopped caring.

She's a good wrestler, legitimately knows and loves the business, has a fun and interesting character, and seems the most genuine of all the Divas. As said above, she's a victim of a company that doesn't care about womens wrestling.

AJ was their best chance for a major breakout female star. The biggest one since Trish and Lita. But as successful as AJ has been, they could have done a lot more. There's a real reluctance in WWE to push women, even though in every other form of entertainment, women-led products and projects have made shitloads of money. You are absolutely right about this. When push came to shove, when they actually had to push her in the division that she belongs to, they got very bored and she doesn't much material to work with. Even as far as ring time goes, her longest matches are on PPV and even those aren't very long typically. She has the feud with Kaitlyn to be proud of and a very good heel run but I am always shocked to read about how much Vince likes her and then see that she only gets slightly more focus than the other divas. With that said, I love this thread. There are many good responses and a few fair criticisms, and it's just nice to see that a diva in WWE can still get a level of thoughtful analysis that doesn't focus on her looks.

At this juncture, I think it's just overexposure. When she was GM and getting to be the Poochie of RAW, I just went off her. Then the whole "Crazy" schtick came about, and the poor attempt at acting soured me on her.
Plus, it doesn't help that a lot of her fans are complete nutbars who worship everything she does and won't hear anything negative about her.

I wanted to garner a serious discussion on her, that didn't revolve around her looks. I didn't want it to devolve into a pissing contest of AJ RULES!/AJ SUCKS!, just a simple, fair exchange of opinions and ideas. No one is wrong or right in their opinions here. I would love to see it done with more wrestlers.

Once she stopped being GM (hated her in that role, in the wrong way) and started wrestling regularly, I became a fan. I liked how she'd go out there and put on a show, just act like a total loon and lose herself in the match and her character, overselling and making crazy faces, I really enjoyed what she brought to the table because she felt so much more natural and human than the other divas, and a lot of the guys. I also liked when she'd get on color commentary and talk shit just like a guy would, and she didn't take any crap off of the announcers and gave it right back to them.
Now, I don't know what it is, but she's lost that spark. Maybe it's just the feud she's in, maybe it's overall direction of her character, maybe she's just not as into it as she used to be.

Honestly I do find a thread like this kinda pathetic. Everyone likes who they like and they shouldn't really be questioned why. We all got our different opinions and I feel as if this is the perfect thread for some certain people to simply trash on her. Then we get the usual drama that makes me frustrated as an AJ and women's wrestling fan. Watch this hit ten pages. In OP's defense, she simply wanted insight into why people like her out of curiosity. Nothing wrong with it, and you just gave very good reasons as to why. I've never understood people's kneejerk reactions to being asked to explain what it is they like about something. If anything, that's easy. You know why you do. Share it. It's not going to invalidate your beliefs. If anything, hopefully, it'll paint a picture for someone who might not see something you do, and alter their perception slightly, or at least make them understand better. Helping people understand should be the goal of all conversing. It's how people with different views and ideals potentially find common ground. It's a good thing. It's all in how the question is phrased. This thread is a good way to go about it. Some are just "I hate this person, so go ahead and sell me on them, then I'll disagree with everything you post", and it's like they're trying to get you to say "you know what you're right. that wrestler I like actually sucks, and I'm wrong for liking them!" I like this thread though, "why?" is always a good question to get people thinking and discussing.

I won't lie, the first thing that caught my eye about her, was her looks. But my fandom has evolved. I think she's a good wrestler, is great on the mic, and from her tweets and time on commentary she seems to have a quick wit.

I loved her on NXT. She was an adorable north Jersey girl who was funny and cute and smart who I would have been absolutely crazy about in high school.
I liked her up until about her split with Ziggler. I like how she has went off on her own, but something about her just started rubbing me the wrong way. The overuse of the skipping, the "oh I'm a wrestler not a sex object but I'm just stick my tush out all the time" attitude, it all just got on my nerves. The 'Pipebombshell' and the infamous Michelle Beadle story didn't help matter either.
Also dating and later marrying the man who was with the woman you idolized growing up is pretty f***ing weird, and I'm not sure there was much if any time in between Punk being with Lita and then Punk being with AJ.

One thing I've noticed a bit in this thread that still boggles my mind to this day. Why is the response from fans in regards to a talent something that effects how you look at them personally?
Anyway, to the OP, I'm not really on the AJ bandwagon, but she's agile, she's got a bad ass finishing hold, and its fun watching her get the hell beaten out of her. Its hard for me not to like someone who possesses those qualities.

She's talented in the ring, she's talented on the mic, and most of the biggest reasons to dislike AJ are things that are out of her control. The fact that she was overexposed was primarily WWE themselves just "doing that", man or woman- if someone gets a bit of a buzz, they shove the person down people's throats until even their fans will get sick of them. She's a little overplayed, but perfectly acceptable.

She throws herself into her character completely. Regardless of how out-there she acts sometimes, every single second she's out there she looks like she believes it.
This is, IMO, one of the best qualities a wrestler can have. See also: Daniel Bryan, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, Kevin Steen, Kenta Kobashi, Ric Flair.

As mentioned earlier, AJ's gimmick hit a massive wall in 2012. Her plateau came too early. I feel bad for her in the sense that guys like Fitzgerald, Capote, became literary celebs in their early twenties, and these days you have Lohan and Spears. Her marriage to the most infamous womanizer in recent wrestling history has always seemed like a psychotic cry for help to me. She will probably be released by WWE sooner than later, and then Punk will get back to his womanizing ways and divorce follows. It is a personal shame. In terms of TV-watching, it will be great when she's gone. Maybe a quick run in TNA, and then to the bars with Sunny. So it goes.

Its hard for me not to like someone who possesses those qualities. I agree with this post entirely. I'd also say that as much as I think AJ is good, she has been put in a position where the crazy act (skipping/head tilt) along with the forced speed talking (Zigglerisms) do make her come across badly in kayfabe terms. Seriously, needless lesbian overtones/mind games to put over two talented performers? Her being so happy when she should be pissed off etc. If she could move beyond 'women be crazy, yo' and had better storylines to allow her to not cut intentionally rushed/daft promos she'd be great. That's something that can be aimed at a lot of the roster as well, not just AJ. So yeah, AJ's solid-good for the reasons the reasonable Digital Witness stated.
