Again no Moose! But Smoltz gets in SMH. To me, what puts Smoltz over the top compared to Mussina is his better post-season record, having over 3000 strikeouts, and his successful transition to a being an elite closer. Also, and this is a small thing, Smoltz was a 'Silver Slugger' and had a reputation as one of the better hitters among pitchers. Mussina had more successful years as a starter, so I'll give him that. Still, I don't understand somoene being pissed that Smoltz went in. My argument for what it takes to get in is this: Was this person the BEST, or could readily be argued as THE BEST, during a five year period in their career? Moose, like Smoltz, fit that criteria. This is a man who's worst year, 2001 with Baltimore, had a dismal win loss, 11-15, but in the midst of the late 90s power surge had a 3.79, in the AL East. Eating up a league leading 237.2 Innings, 6 complete game, 1 Shutout. With a 46BB to 210Ks, a WHiP of 1.187, and a K/BB ratio of 4.57. And finally a WAR of 5.6, while having more LOSES than WINS. This is objectively his 'worst' full year (barring his 2007 year, where age and injury got him). He finished 6th in Cy Young voting. It was his last season in Baltimore. While he never had the supernal stretch that Pedro did, he did not have the same precipitous drop off Pedro did (though, it was more like a PITCHING GAWD became mortal, than anything else). In fact, his end of his Career statline places him DECIDEDLY ahead of Smoltz. With more Gold Gloves Though, Smoltz reinvention as a closer, and his return to being a starter do give him intangible points, and if he had kept up his starter time, they would have like comparable W/L, WHiP, ERA, and WAR. But I would stress they are equitable in their deserving for the HOF. It's not like I am a homer for these considerations, I am from the West Coast, I am a Giants fan. I hate the Braves, because they were like Baseball's version of the Cowboys. And because they were so damned good for so damned long. I don't see anything negative about the Glavine reunion. Or Smoltz. Or any of them. For a stretch they were dominant. While not as dominant as Pedro during his peak, they were consistent in the argument for the best pitchers in the National League for well over 5 years. Also I feel that we should table talk of PED use. Put an asterisk next to them and then you may as well asterisk each and EVERY Era change. Hell, while amphetamine and stimulant use was barred in 1991 or somewhere in the early 1990s there wasn't testing for them until they started to test of other PEDS. And there was admission of their use in the 50s and 60s. And they were PEDS for all intents and purposes, so you might as well remove them, or asterisk them. Cheating, or gaming the system is not a new thing, see Pud Galvin, who in 1889 used the Brown-Séquard elixir before at least one game. It's special ingredient? Monkey Testosterone. There are so many variables, so many things to account, that... the BBWA are not the stewards and guardians of the history of the game, while they continually ignore all the dirty, back alley efforts and dealings of that history. The scrubbing and sanitizing of that history devalues it. Do we asterisk everyone after the deadball era? Before the night game era? The Amphetamines era? Pre-integration? Post 162 games? Post Tommy John Surgery era? Post Free Agent? The metric of exclusion is one that has no clean answer, and can be initiated at any point during it's long and storied history. And the BBWA's stewardship of the history of the game they say they love is so toxic as to be a detriment.

The Gallardo deal is done. Brewers get 2B-SS Luis Sardinas, RHP Corey Knebel and RHP Marcos Diplan. Sardinas is a good glove, no hit middle infielder, Knebel is a late inning relief type and I don't know anything about Diplan.

As a Nats fan I have no idea why we got Scherzer. Tanner Roark who won 15 games for us last year is now our 6th starter. A trade must be looming somewhere, or Rizzo is fully prepared to lose Jordan Zimmermann next offseason.
