It's because people are into it. Besides, it's symbolic, it shows their appreciation of the filmmakers' work. It can also be to share a moment with the rest of the audience.
I don't see what the big mystery is here.

I laugh and clap if something's especially funny. It's a way of expressing joy. I don't clap at the end of a good movie though, because that's psychopathic behaviour.

Thank God.

I've never experienced this. Thank God. It is more likely to happen on opening day, weekend where the excitement for the film is highest. I had it happen when I watched Winter Solider. I just did not join in because it does seem silly when it is a movie not a play where the actors can hear you clap.

Perhaps some of us aren't cold hearted monsters willing to let Tinkerbell die.

The only time I can imagine myself doing that would be if I knew that someone involved with the movie was in attendance, like if they personally introduced it in front of the screen.

Yeah, all of my applause experiences tend to be during opening weekends, except for the time I saw Avengers on what I think was its second week out. The Dark Knight and Frost/Nixon were some of the louder ones I heard.

I've seen it at Star Wars and Guardians. Those movies I saw on opening night though.

I've seen it quite a lot, both at screenings with interviews with cast/director -last time I applauded was post Cheap Thrills when director/lead took a bow as that film was INCREDIBLE- and in the US on opening weekends, don't engage with it myself unless there's people linked to the film there or such, but as an expression of joy I can understand people doing it. Something a good cheer/clap of hands can put you in a better mood.

What is going on here? People who yell at or applaud at the television or after a movie at the theater......who do you think is hearing this? Also, tell my neighbors to stop cheering at the TV. A couple of buddies from my old job complained about this before as we were driving to see The Dark Knight Rises. So I ended up giving the movie a standing ovation just to troll them.

I've never seen this at all. Must be an American thing. Although I try and start "you f***ed up" chants if I see a boom mic.

Midnight showing of the Phantom Menace, 20 minutes before the movie we had a STAR WARS chant going strong. Was a guy running around in a Wookiee costume and a couple Jedi with sabers playfighting at the front of the cinema. Good times.
That was the only time I've seen crowd reaction to a movie beyond groaning or getting up to leave.

I always thought this was an American thing and never understood it - until I went to a preview screening of Borat.
Still don't understand it.

Only time I can remember clapping was at Chicken Run because that movie was amazing and I was so happy the chickens did not die. It is amazing that they got me to care so much given that chickens are delicious and in real life I would be lining up to buy the pot pie. Spoiler alert.

I personally don't get it when it comes to movies and television shows, but as a sports fan I'm constantly yelling and cheering at the tv.
