What is going on here?
People who yell at or applaud at the television or after a movie at the theater......who do you think is hearing this?
Applause is generally used to show appreciation or approval to the creator/artist/athelete. So when they're not there it seems odd to me.
Also, tell my neighbors to stop cheering at the TV.

When I saw Grand Budapest Hotel earlier this year at the theatre, I tried to start a "You Still Got It" chant when Owen Wilson appeared. He wasn't in Moonrise Kingdom. And when Bill Murray appeared, I did the bow taunt.

If I go to the theater and the movie sucks, I start a "RANDY SAVAGE" chant.

I've been to a number of movies where the audience (me as well) applauded at the end.
Those characters need to know they did a good job, god dammit.

There ain't nothing wrong with showing your approval of what you just saw. Emotions are what they are! What do you do, OP, just nod after the movie and walk out like some kind of stiff-upper-lipped bourgeois?

Sometimes it's just a natural function. Like when I was watching the season 4 finale of breaking bad for the first time I just started clapping naturally. I really don't know why or can't explain it but my body just started clapping by itself

I love clapping and cheering with everyone at a Marvel movie. It's half the fun of going to a theater.

The applause at the end is always strange to me. I've only been to a few movies where people have done that and it's always befuddling.

The first time I experienced a crowd clapping in a movie theater was at Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
Yes. Your eyes do not deceive you. f***ing Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

My idea is that the people who don't like it should just keep believing it has to do with the audience trying to communicate through the screen or whatever. It's gonna annoy yall either way.

But applause by its very nature's is to show appreciation to the creator of the piece. If they're not there....?

Yet to experience this myself.
I dunno, maybe it's not a British Thing..
But I would take it over the group of dickheads who insist on talking whilst the movie is on, I payed good money to see this movie so shut the f*** up and let me watch it.

Only time I can remember clapping was at Chicken Run because that movie was amazing and I was so happy the chickens did not die. It is amazing that they got me to care so much given that chickens are delicious and in real life I would be lining up to buy the pot pie.

Never happened. Like Eunös suggests, maybe it's a British thing, don't know. But I've been to God knows how many movies over the years and I've never heard even a polite ripple of applause. Some laughs at the good jokes, sure, nothing more than that.
