Do what you like in your own home, but I am so glad that the shouting and clapping and whooping stuff Americans seem to do in the cinema has never caught on here.
If it did, I would probably end up hitting someone.

You see something cool, you clap, pretty simple really.
It has not happened to me often but I went to see Avengers two times and both times people clapped at the two Hulk moments where he bashed Loki and when he clocked Thor. Would have been weird if they didn't.
Now as far as TV, if you watch Sports and you don't talk or scream at the TV, you're not human.

I made this same type of post after The Dark Knight came out, and I mentioned how I thought it was strange that people clapped at the end, and everyone here berated me for it!

I don't get it at all. You're applauding a pre-recorded video file.

The funniest to me was when my wife and I went to see The Phantom Menace on opening weekend. Soon as the fanfare of the main title started the crowd erupted in applause. Not so much for the end of the film.

Some people think that TVs these days have built in "Clapper" functions and are actually trying to turn them off without getting up.

Meh, I don't see it as being any worse than clapping at sporting events.
