What's the point of using real names on Facebook/Twitter when a massive mob (or your employer) is just waiting to punish you for saying something dumb?

Facebook I can see it's mainly to connect with people you know. I haven't had one in 4 years so maybe that changed? Twitter really you should only use your real name if you're a celebrity.

the key there is, don't say anything dumb/stupid You have to basically be a corporate, sanitized version of yourself. In order to have fun, and to be an interesting person, you have to take the risks involved in the possibility of saying something stupid. (That doesn't mean saying something stupid on purpose, just that if you have to put a massive filter on yourself, you end up filtering out a lot of cool stuff as well) Imagine if you were hanging out with your friends, and you had to take the same precautions that you do online, it would be a very boring time.

People don't seem to realise that this stuff is public. It amazes me sometime the things people will say on Twitter etc.

I use my real name on Twitter.
Your company doesn't have a right to use it against you unless you're a public figure for them or you associate yourself with them.
The place I work for has a social media policy that dictates if you put that you work for them in your profile or talk about them as an employee, then you'll be under more speculation.
I don't talk about my job in my tweets or my profile...or at all really and I say whatever the f*** I want on my Twitter.
I mean, not for nothing, but why the f*** would you want to talk about work when you're not there? I barely talk about it when I am there.
Anyway - there's a difference between being a "sanitized version of yourself" and acting like decent person and not talking about people behind their f***ing backs like a coward. If you wanna say how you love getting blasted on the weekend, they can't touch you. You show up late for work and lie about having a "dead relative" or "being sick" and then get busted for it - that's on you for lying.
As far as a "massive mob" goes, if you're that worried about what strangers think of you then shut up. Stand by what you say or stop talking.

I take the middleman approach and use a "pen name" that sounds close enough to the actual name on Twitter, to play up potential future as an author.

Illinois is an at will employment state, meaning they can let me go for anything. So your advice is not spot on, duder. Also, we have a morals clause, we can be fired for talking about drinking even if it wasn't at will. My job has some amazing things happen, so sometimes I do talk about it and want to. So, while your words may apply to you, they do not apply to everyone. Except for the whole "act like a decent person" part, that is spot on. It is Facebook, not "ActLikeAToolBook" and Twitter, not "Twatter".

People don't care
I've seen countless people on Facebook with their real names, photos, workplace, birthdate, relatives and children all displayed, posting the most vile racist, homophobic, sexist, shit I have ever seen

I've gotten in trouble before and was fired from my last job actually. I then changed my name on facebook, but haven't been a douche either. I kind of wish I could go back to my real name at this point, but facebooks a tight ass system.

Much creepier to me is people who have facebooks as their children, like, "My mommy is going to get her hair done! She's so pretty!" or whatever, like, I get the kid might've said that, but they're like 4. They don't need a facebook.

Yeah, I'm in an at-will state too. With me is even in the event I do go hard on Facebook (which I rarely use), with the things I go hard about, I couldn't give a shit if they fired me for it. And it's not a "gyp." That comes from a racial slur. It's totally a con job though.

the key there is, don't say anything dumb/stupid Methinks OP's been caught out by an employer for something they've said on Social Media.

Methinks OP's been caught out by an employer for something they've said on Social Media. Except for this forum, I don't use social media. I have placeholder accounts but I don't use them. Too paranoid to use them. If I had to use my real name on this forum I would have made no posts at all. "Bagger Cash" is just a handle, I don't need to be ultra-protective of its reputation. I bet if license plates had the driver's name on it, just about everyone would drive extremely slow (except for the few that don't care). If people's shirts/coats had their names in big letters, I'd think public behaviour would be a lot different.

A lot of Americans don't seem to realize there are racial slurs that aren't the ones used against blacks.
