YouPorn, which a cursory Google search tells me is a streaming adult video webpage, has announced its sponsorship of a Spanish eSports team (HearthStone, League of Legends).
Play2Win will now be known as Team YP, which sounds like someone saying "yep" quickly and is kind of cute. Team YP's first test(es) comes this Friday at a DOTA2 tournament in Madrid, the start of a six month agreement. I'm sure if it's as good for YP as it is for the crew, they'll extend the deal so it lasts even longer. eSports sure is growing.
VP of YP Brad Burns is, "so psyched to finally make our official entry into gaming and eSports."
Hardcore. I think I can come up with some better team names. Team Hands On, Team Erect, Team Sticky.

I'm suprised they didn't mention something about them playing with their joysticks.

Ah, I see. Cool then. Though I'm always torn about sites like youporn and stuff because its basically killing the industry in a lot of ways, but eh. yeah.

I never got the appeal of Youporn. Anytime hops on your computer to check out a Youtube video, BOOM!

For some perspective, this isn't really a team that expects to ever win anything important. It would be like sponsoring a lower tier English Football team or a minor league Baseball team in America. More of a test run than anything, I imagine, given the backlash to Youporn's initial intentions to get involved with eSports several months ago.
Need a time machine so they can sponsor my shitty CAL-M Counter Strike team from 2003.

They were in talks with much bigger teams, but it seems those fell through, partially due to rules in pro League of Legends (and I believe a lot of pro Dota IIRC) that limited them to pretty irrelevant teams. I wouldn't be shocked if this was a dry run to show the developers they can be responsible, and thus enable themselves a shot at an LCS team or TI caliber one.
Personally, I have no problem with it, and the more money going into Esports, the better.

Not to mention that the FGC is pretty much entirely unpoliced and uncensored, IIRC.

Since we seem to have someone that knows about the whole esports thing, what sorts of people/companies are the usual sponsors for teams? I'm guessing some (or most) are what you would expect; computer hardware manufacturers and the like.

Since they can't sponsor an actual sport, next best thing is an E one.

I'm guessing some (or most) are what you would expect; computer hardware manufacturers and the like. Tech companies, gaming companies are super common. In Korea, it's big enough that telecom and airlines are involved. Red Bull runs their own events. Pringles sponsor a Russian team. Coke sponsors the league of legends pro league. The sponsors are getting better and better. It's honestly a pretty good investment as it doesn't take much money, and 27 million people watched the LoL world finals, for instance.
