In the territory days only the faces had merch and the faces would split the money 50/50 with the heel they were fueding with. Someone should suggest this to Cena

Would anyone be shocked if Lesnar turned out to be a mech?

You give me that mustache back and I'll hand over the shiny red tin can. Psh. Mustaches are so November.

merch sales is the reason most the heels are obsessed with coming across as "cool" rather than being dickbags trying to get you to hate them. In the territory days only the faces had merch and the faces would split the money 50/50 with the heel they were fueding with. Then I guess the NWO showed that heels can sell merch. Interesting. I never about the 50/50 split.

You know, after THE Promo he wasn't automatically a face....still sold a lot of tshirts in that time. This shirt did begin being sold when he was a heel, but honestly, this time period was relatively short in the long run. There was a period in the final months of 1996 and the first few months of 1997 when he was a heel, but the true explosion of Austin and that shirt would have been after WrestleMania 13 (when he turned babyface). There has been a bit of a myth that 'Austin 3:16' caught on right after King of the Ring, but it took a while for it to really catch on.

Why wouldn't the heels get successful merch? People knows it's make-believe, right? I bet that the Shield made tons of money from it.

Because aren't supposed to be liked, so generally they have less merch. Jericho has stated when he was Serious Jericho he ditched all his merch, he didn't want fans supporting him, they're supposed to hate him, so why give him money? This is all in a work context, I get your actual question, but a lot of heels aren't worried about their merch royalties, so they don't have much stuff to sell.

I always thought that heels were paid more than faces, though I suppose the blue-eyes were able to compensate through more merch options and better merch sales That said, if there was one heel's T-shirt which sold more than Piper's, it was Randy Savage's. Jake Roberts's T-shirt had a number of takers as well. Liz's poster can't have done too badly, what with the repeat customers and all

This is why I believe heels should encourage their fans to turn with him, and support them regardless.

I would guess Austin sold a ton of merchandise during his heel run in 2001.
Punk cost himself money turning heel, but he was probably still the number 2 or 3 merchandise seller.

But when Jericho was in his serious phase, the character itself was designed not be liked or be attractive because of the way his promos were like and how his look was toned down. It's so much that he was a heel but more like cause his character was not commercial. Now I know heels are not supposed to be liked but in this day and age I thought people enjoyed wrestlers whether they were heels or faces and not stick to the company line.
