It was a bad idea for a movie from the outset. This is one of those ideas that never should have gone further than being greenlit, let alone actually filmed and released. I remember seeing the trailer back in the summer and thinking, "This is bad...this is going to piss off a LOT of people."
On top of it all, it just didn't look funny. It looked like Seth Rogen and James Franco came up with a taboo idea, giggled about it, then were astonished when someone said, "OK, here's X-million dollars to make it happen."

@rfaughnder: Sony spox: "Sony Pictures has no further release plans for the film." No VOD, no nothing.

Whether it is a good or bad movie is irrelevant to me. Its also hardly a new idea or even taboo. 10 years ago Trey Parker and Matt Stone turned the leader of North Korea into a marionette and killed him in that movie after revealing he was an alien cockroach. The difference now is some jabronis with an internet connection were able to get it stopped by threatening us, which is the sad part. Hell, Charlie Chaplin's Great Dictator came out in 1940 before the US were even involved in WWII.

Postponing the thing until the threats can be dismissed made sense to me. Yeah, there is probably nothing but the ranting and raving of a lunatic despot but in the off chance that it is not or they could even get to one theatre I'd rather be safe than mourning several people.
Completely pulling the film I hate though. There is no reason for that at all and reeks of taking a real life incident and turning it into promotional stunt.

So, who is hacking Fox to stop Fantastic Four from being released?

Honestly, after the Dark Knight Rises shooting, I can't fault theaters from pulling the movie. The two don't correlate. The DKR shooting was perpetuated by a wacko American. It also wasn't driven by the movie. He chose that movie because he knew it was going to be packed and it came out at the time he was ready to do what he did. This situation (The Interview) has been blown completely out of proportion. You can hack a computer from anywhere in the world. North Koreans actually getting into this country and perpetuating violence b/c of a film's content? The chance of this actually occurring is so far fetched that the threats are laughable. Christ himself was more likely to show up for a screening than anything actually occurring. I'm not saying the two situations are exactly alike but that the previous event not being a distant enough memory just to up and ignore the threats. And frankly, no theater in their right mind should put people at risk just so they won't "Let the terrorists win."

I'm guessing a big part of it is a promotional stunt. Sony can always release the Blu-Ray when the media buzz dies down and the film's increased notoriety will boost sales.

If Sony put it straight to DVD just because they didn't think it would be financially viable or it didn't fit their current wheelhouse of cinema they're putting out, that makes sense to me, but this - oof! This is just all kinds of strange and confusing.
I mean, its just a movie, at the end of the day and it will get out there so it not being released in theaters isn't that big of a deal. But it is kind of a scary thought if this were to be used for more pressing matters that affected people's lives. Like forcing embargoes or something like that. Ugh. I can't even get my head around the implications of it all, but its definitely strange.

Honestly it's a political move by North Korea that they are afraid of bootleg copies of the DVD will find it's way in the country causing many North Korean citizens to laugh at him, think of him as a joke, and who knows maybe start an uprising? Like I know there is a still problem of bootleg DVD copies of Team America in North Korea. But yeah this sucks and is honestly just depressing

This is just pathetic on Sony's part. Score one for censorship, I guess. I get that Sony was probably taking the high road in the event of some sort of attack, but damn. Did North Korea pitch a similar fit when Team America was released?

To be fair, documentaries such as Red Dawn and Olympus Has Fallen show that North Koreans have been capable of hitting America in the heartland and the capitol.

I think we should publicly point and laugh at North Korea for getting this bent out of shape over a Seth Rogen movie. LOL I like a lot of dumb comedies, but this really didn't look appealing to me at all. I wasn't going to go see it and probably wouldn't have rented it either. When I first heard this, I thought it was dumb to succumb to this. However, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if some dumba** nut case from the US shot up a theater after all of this. So, probably a smart idea to not release it.
