@thrmattbelloni: Why did Sony scrap VOD for The Interview? Insurance, a (non-sony) source tells me. A total loss invokes full coverage, partial doesn't.

As long as Peanuts and SPECTRE are still coming out later next year.
If not, someone's gonna pay.

I won't say what I truly feel, but, otherwise, too bad, was kind of interested in seeing this.

Postponing the thing until the threats can be dismissed made sense to me. Yeah, there is probably nothing but the ranting and raving of a lunatic despot but in the off chance that it is not or they could even get to one theatre I'd rather be safe than mourning several people. Completely pulling the film I hate though. There is no reason for that at all and reeks of taking a real life incident and turning it into promotional stunt. I'm guessing a big part of it is a promotional stunt. Sony can always release the Blu-Ray when the media buzz dies down and the film's increased notoriety will boost sales. Even the Blu-Ray or VOD, which are insurance reasons- would be a little too low. Personally, I think if Sony really wanted to take a stand here and be immune from the problem, the better option would be for Sony to officially announce they've forfeited their copyright to "The Interview"- both kowtowing to North Korea and saying "we washed our hands of the whole movie, it's no longer ours"... ...and in the process, instantly putting "The Interview" into the public domain, making it able for anyone and everyone to release, stream, or put wherever or whenever they want and REALLY striking the blow against them.

It's kind of absurd that this film gets all the terror threats, while Team America, made 10 years ago, didn't harbor similar feelings. And that film had Americans blowing up North Koreans, who were the villains of the film. Team America was outwardly satirical of American interventionism. Yes, the North Koreans were "antagonists" but the premise of the movie wasn't about doing an assassination. Also, pre-rise of social media and all that. Also Kim Jong Ill was a huge fan of films, much like his son is a huge sports fan....so I guess the late leader may have been more lenient towards films from outside North Korea.

Honestly, he might have considering he was so much a fan of movies that he kidnapped a director just so he could get a movie made.

If threats are being made towards movie theaters, releasing The Interview on torrent sites is absolutely a great idea. I mean at this point, the chances of Sony actually making decent money on The Interview are pretty slim, right? There's all sorts of negative PR, political drama, and legal baggage surrounding this entire thing for Sony to have a win here (not even counting whether the film is any good or not) and home video release could potentially bring the same threats as releasing in theaters. At least torrent sites are a safer option.

I would be more upset about this if the trailers didn't paint the picture that it completely failed in the one area that actually matters: Being funny.

Reading back over the thread, I'm seeing people say that Sony is trying to take the high road if an attack happens. The thing is, everyone close to this story and everyone investigating it says that these threats were never credible. So, unless Sony got word of a serious threat that no one else knows about, it's a weird decision.
The fact is, they are the ones who will have to answer for it. No one else can do anything about this other than Sony and they need to either explain why they decided to cave even in the face of the government and everyone who's been covering the story since day one saying that the threat of an attack was slim to none. They also have to decide whether or not they're truly going to just throw this movie into the vault or release it some other way.
Also, brace yourselves for the media going into panic mode over this. It's getting about that time for them to remind everyone just how far a North Korean nuke can travel again.

So, unless Sony got word of a serious threat that no one else knows about, it's a weird decision. Had Aurora never happened, they wouldn't be pulling The Interview. So while most are in agreement there's no threat from North Korea, Sony fears the lone wolf true believer, that will pull something like Aurora (even thought that had no political undertones). This is just Sony covering their asses, if an attack were to happen, and there are actual threats beforehand Sony would get destroyed.

As long as Peanuts and SPECTRE are still coming out later next year. If not, someone's gonna pay. I think they're safe, after the critical disaster that was Die Another Day Bond won't be going back to North Korea anytime soon, and the Red Baron is still the only red menace Snoopy will go toe to toe with.

The villains were the one thing about Die Another Day I didn't mind. It was the overblown story (including Bond no selling being tortured) and Halle Berry's inability to play a convincing action girl that were my major problems.
